I did a run through of MJs last live performances yesterday, and it's really a mixed bag. It makes for a pretty solid set-list/collection though.
MSG 30 2001

At the Apollo 2002

Black or White
Heal The World.
The 30th show has a special place for me. I enjoy it for the last proper MJ concert experience and love that The Jacksons performed. Bits and pieces seem off about the performance but it's by no means bad or any worse than we'd seen before. He was very out of breathe during YRMW listening to the live vocals. The end of Billie Jean is a bit weird.
United We Stand, would love to see the MITM performance. MJs live vocals towards the end are about as youd expect. No HIStory laryngitis but out of breath. Still strong.
What More Can I Give is a delightful mess. Loads dont know the song or their lines. Lots of female singers over singing. MJs first lines are nice, then switches to playback for the middle eight.
The American Bandstand is interesting because it's like Dangerous devolved a bit. Added parts from the 99 performances are gone. MJs live mic is on towards the breakdown and you can hear exactly how out of breath he is.
Not much to say about The Apollo as it's all playback (even the music) and no live vocals until the end of Heal The World which isnt bad. I'm more interested in the choice of songs - basically a Dangerous suite. Merely 7 months after Invincible. Theres something about those 3 songs that MJ really liked, or wanted to stress. Heal the World and Black or White speak for themselves, with the message being fairly obvious. But aside from being a spectacular choreographed number, Dangerous is an interesting choice out of his catalogue. The last song on his most inner reflective album, placed after a sequence of very personal and introspective songs finishing out a side of an album with more traditional production with a heavy hitting new jack swing and dark subject matter. Just fascinated by his own fascination with Dangerous towards the end of his performing career at a time when he had just released new material. Bad eas released in 1987 and was promoted live until 1989. Dangerous was 91-93 and HIStory was 95-97. Invincible barely got 2 months and only 1 song performed twice (and one outtake). Its fascinating.
