Hi guys, I’m new here… Not to be a downer because I know there is a lot of excitement in the MJ community at the moment about the biopic and god knows we deserve some good news and lighter moments. BUT, I will say, I am nervous about the eventual hate campaign that the mainstream media will be on sooner than later. I think it’s safe to say the mainstream media isn’t happy about this biopic coming out and will try to dissuade people from seeing it. It’s mostly all fun and games in the community but stepping out of it and hearing other media outlets talk about the Biopic, it’s not great. Like the god-awful “Think Twice” podcast that got a lot of traction and shoutout from prestigious outlets. I know I shouldn’t care about the negative press, but that’s the only way we can gauge if the tide is turning on him, so sometimes it’s necessary to engage with the mainstream media. However, it usually ends in disappointment and frustration that these hit pieces get traction and positive pieces rarely do. Worse, when they disguise themselves as unbiased (i.e. “Think Twice”) but clearly have a guilty agenda and explain everything through that lens, keeping it all very ominous. It’s so obvious to fans in the know, but to casual, curious people it’s very persuasive. I don’t really know where I am going with this post but to say that I’m nervous about the influx of anti-MJ hit pieces that are bound to come.
Also, I am aware that there is a huge divide between what the media thinks about MJ and what the general public thinks. His haters are a small but very loud and powerful sector of people. Generally speaking, the world still loves MJ.

I get your concerns Abbey and echo them to some degree. It does feel like a very bold move on the part of the estate, but I'm hoping the biopic will cover the allegations in a meaningful way so as to showcase to the public that there are two sides to every story.
If they really do something stupid and stop the biopic in 1992 like MJ The Musical, then they will deserve all the criticism they get. It needs to be addressed and the movie is the perfect vehicle to shine a light on the many, many provable injustices that MJ had to endure in both 93 and 05.

There'll always be haters. I think the estate have the right approach, charge ahead in the knowledge that MJ will always have the support of millions of fans worldwide. Everything else can be tuned out.

I am optimistic about the biopic with a healthy degree of skepticism. I will be pleasantly surprised if they find a coherent and satisfactory way to include the allegations along with everything in his jam-packed life. We will just have to wait and see...

Everything else can be tuned out. I get that, but it's much easier said than done lol. My deal is that these “haters” have a lot of power and reach. I mean their coverage on LN really did a number on his reputation, generally speaking. I am just hoping the estate and those involved in the biopic cover the allegations in a smart and sufficient way, I think ignoring them would be a huge mistake. That is the biggest controversy hanging over his otherwise stellar career. If the biopic is just a celebratory/puff piece then the audience will most likely be wowed but still leave with the big question looming.

John Branca has stated in no uncertain terms that the biopic isn't going to be a puff piece. From that, I am ascertaining that it WILL deal with the allegations in some form. I agree with theunknownmonster, that this needs to be addressed and could be done so in a way that has a lot of potential to make audiences stop and question what they think they know about MJ and the allegations. Whether they will seize that opportunity to do something meaningful pertaining to this remains to be seen. I hope they do. As for the inevitable media backlash, well, if we can get through LN, then what's a few more negative articles?

Very true, but I'm also referring to more produced hit pieces like podcasts and documentaries, I feel like that stuff has more of a reach in today's media climate. It all comes down to how they go about the controversies. It seems almost impossible to fit the big events of his life into a film, never mind something as complex as the allegations. If they can pull it off, it would be a miracle. I'm going to remain hopeful as of now.

I can understand you... With the trial coming, these idiots will do everything to ensure that their trial and scandal, or even a second documentary released by the other freak comes out at the same time as the biopic like that was the cases with LN.
