Great topic! There’s a Moonwalking Kingdom video on YouTube touching on this, and here’s the comment I made underneath it:

On one hand, I understand some fans getting tight about Michael being labeled “complicated.” Much of the mainstream media (and even the general public) purposely distort and pervert his traits and characteristics that are human and relatively normal. Context definitely matters.

But on the other hand, I think those fans should try to compartmentalize their emotions. Michael’s life, legacy, and career were (and continue to be) objectively complicated. And, like you said, every human being on Earth is complicated. That’s not an inherently bad thing.

Exactly. What bothers me most is when people analyze his music/artistic output with a pervert or sinister lens and can’t take it at face value anymore. For example, the song and video Thriller has to be about MJ “becoming the monster he truly is and wrestling with the evils inside of him” BS like that, gimme a break… or that his later catalog of emotional and personal songs is him pretending to be victimized to gain sympathy and hoodwink the audience. It can’t just be about difficult experiences he wants to express honestly through his art, it has to be an elaborate manipulation tactic to save his reputation.
