Since when has the quality of a persons music ever reflected their commercial success? All For You was a fairly mediocre album on the whole, but it outsold The Velvet Rope, which is obviously the superior album. Janet's had some great songs post-Nipplegate, songs like Enjoy, I Want You, Burn It Up, Feedback, all of which deserved to be big hits and are far superior to anything released from the likes of Beyoncé or Rhianna. Janet's lack of success over the last decade is down to three factors: 1. She's a black woman who upset middle America. Race is definitely a part of it. I've lost count of the amount of times Madonna's bared her breasts, and yet nobody bats an eyelid. The Sex book was just one of a number of occasions. 2. Nipplegate also happened at a time when MJ was on trial and the Jackson name was being dragged through the mud. 3. She is now considered over-the-hill and would never get radio airplay no matter how good the song was. Are you kidding me? Where you around in the 80s or 90s, or indeed now! 'Nobody bats an eyelid'!!! Madonna has been consistently hauled over the coals for pushing the envelope. Whether it be baring her midriff in 1982, to the infamous wedding dress Like A Virgin performance, to simulating masterbation on stage (it was better than it sounds), to the Justify My Love video, to Erotica, to SEX, and now every bit of flesh she bares, she's 'too old'. Nah, I'm not having that! I agree that ageism is rife in the industry and I semi agree that part of the backlash was because of her surname, but we all know it was deliberate and therefore a stupid thing to do. Madonna may have faced backlash at times in her career, but the industry itself never turned its back on her, the way they did with Janet. Janet was literally blackballed overnight by US radio. The lead single from Damita Jo (Just A Little While) was getting heavy rotation on US radio and was on course to be another big hit Stateside for Janet, but it was literally dropped from every major station the day after Nipplegate, and she was never given airplay again after that. Madonna has only recently faced that kind of treatment, mainly due to her age.

It's only because Madonna kept coming back with killer tunes that she kept her career going in a hostile environment. Similar with MJ and HIStory, if it wasn't such a strong record his career would have been over in 1993.

I ain't that young Tony, I do remember Madonna being a floozy in the early 90s and the shit she got for the Sex book. I agree that her quality control kept her relevant for a long time, but I still maintain Janet produced several songs after 2005 that should've gone on to become massive hits had the entire world not lost their shit over the sight of her areola. And I believe the reason she never got the same amount of second chances Madonna got was because of her race and her surname.

I don't remember Madonna being blacklisted. Criticized? Yes. But she was still being played. I was more an MTV person than radio at the time and I don't remember MTV ever dropping her. The Catholic Church threw a fit over Like A Prayer, but that just made her more edgy in the eyes of other audiences. So it was a two-edge sword. I don't remember it ever being as bad as against Janet. And I agree with Matty: race and her being a Jackson at a bad time to be a Jackson definitely played its part. BTW, the NFL responded to the criticism in the last few days by saying Janet is not blacklisted. (Funny, because - also according to TMZ - three years ago they sang a different tune like I posted before.) www.tmz.com/2017/10/23/janet-jackson-not-banned-super-bowl-timberlake/

Always was beyond me how I never saw any backlash for this eejit, even though he ripped her boob off.
