Hmmm....this thread may cause a stir!
I'm no major fan but I like Justin and in now way hold him responsible for the Janet fiasco or decline of her career.
Anyway....
www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-41719434
Justin Timberlake is to headline next year's Super Bowl half-time show, 14 years after his role in Janet Jackson's infamous "wardrobe malfunction".
The US pop star revealed the news on his Twitter feed - with a little help from talk show host Jimmy Fallon.
Timberlake sang at the 2001 Super Bowl with former band N'Sync before sharing the stage with Jackson in 2004.
That performance saw the singer rip off part of Jackson's bodice, exposing her right breast.
The "Nipplegate" moment overshadowed events on the field and saw broadcaster CBS receive a record fine.
His 2004 appearance with Jackson remains one of the Super Bowl's most memorable incidents
Timberlake will take to the stage on 4 February 2018 at the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The Super Bowl is traditionally the most-watched television event of the year in the United States.
Other stars to have staged the event's spectacular interval performance in the past include Madonna, Katy Perry, Prince and U2.
Lady Gaga was the headline performer at this year's Super Bowl at the NRG Stadium in Houston.

I can't help but feel that he's been treated a lot differently over the Nipplegate fiasco than Janet. And now he is back. Isn't Janet still blacklisted by the NFL? ETA: According to this, she still was in 2014. www.tmz.com/2014/08/19/nfl-janet-jackson-is-still-banned-from-super-bowl/The double standards re. JT and Janet really leave a bitter taste in my mouth. White male privilege?

I think if it was Madonna the reaction would have been the same.

I dunno, I would say there's probably a mix of racism and sexism at play here. Would Madonna have been blacklisted the same way as Janet for showing a bit of boob? I somehow doubt it.

Yeah I gotta be honest, I can't say I'm overly fussed or even really care about the whole Nipplegate incident. It's not impacted my opinion of either of them and I'm sure JT is going to put on a fantastic show. In fact I'd find it hilarious if Janet Jackson suddenly came out of nowhere on stage and ripped part of his shirt off in a similar fashion, make fun of the whole thing.
What's happened to Janet Jackson after the incident is pathetic though, but I don't really see the point in blaming Timberlake for how Janet Jackson has been treated. If anything, I blame most of the media. It's them who are the ones shunning her. Was it Timberlake who withdrew her invitation to the Grammys? No. Did Timberlake force Disney to remove a Walt Disney World statue of Mickey Mouse dressed as Janet? Nope. Was it Timberlake who made stations all over the world blacklist her music? Not at all. Did Timberlake make all of the journalists focus on the incident when they were writing reviews for her next album? No.
It's the media who should really be blamed for the backlash against Janet Jackson. They're the ones who truly fuelled it. Everyone demands Justin Timberlake that apologise. Should he? Well assuming it wasn't staged then yeah, but I honestly don't think Justin Timberlake either then or now would have had any impact on how the wider media reacted.
Honestly, the way a lot of American media organisations reacted is fucking embarrassing. Why is it even such a big commotion in the first place? It's a fucking nipple for christ's sake. We all have them, it's literally just part of the human anatomy. It was barely on screen for half a second - some people need to seriously grow up.

You barely saw it and the next day people were going insane. I kinda felt it was "Let's pounce on The Jacksons" season (Michael's case was starting) and American media overreacting to sex and human anatomy as usual (even though you see worse on TV everyday, even back in 2004) People's issue was how he threw her under the bus, acting like she hoodwinked him (bringing his mom to the Grammys was so contrived) yet Janet apologized several times and she was treated like a pariah. I remember it all very well and I lost respect for him at how he deserted her in the whole situation.

Like, there shouldn't even be anything against her or anyone at all.

I'm sorry, I'm a huge fan of Janet (especially 1986-1996) but this incident was a stupid publicity stunt that backfired.
I'm not saying the over-reaction wasn't massive, of course it was. But come on, this is the Superbowl, the most apple pie, mac 'n' cheese, middle American event you can get. It's not the place to flash your boob!
As you know, I'm a crazy Madonna fan also and she's done some stupid things in her time, e.g. the Sex book that was over the top, but at least it was in front of her own audience, and that damaged her career in the US for years.
Like I say, the reaction was massively histrionic, but they had to expect some sort of reaction. What did Janet think was gonna happen? She'd be on the front page the next day & everyone would laugh it off? Come on. She should know better than that. This is America.
And also, like I've said before, it wasn't just this that killed her career, it was the fact that she didn't make a great album again after Velvet Rope.

Since when has the quality of a persons music ever reflected their commercial success? All For You was a fairly mediocre album on the whole, but it outsold The Velvet Rope, which is obviously the superior album. Janet's had some great songs post-Nipplegate, songs like Enjoy, I Want You, Burn It Up, Feedback, all of which deserved to be big hits and are far superior to anything released from the likes of Beyoncé or Rhianna. Janet's lack of success over the last decade is down to three factors: 1. She's a black woman who upset middle America. Race is definitely a part of it. I've lost count of the amount of times Madonna's bared her breasts, and yet nobody bats an eyelid. The Sex book was just one of a number of occasions. 2. Nipplegate also happened at a time when MJ was on trial and the Jackson name was being dragged through the mud. 3. She is now considered over-the-hill and would never get radio airplay no matter how good the song was.

I suspect it was deliberate, after all it was perfectly on cue as the song ended with "I'll have you naked by the end of this song", LOL. But I think that's a bit besides the point. I don't think JT was innocent in it, I think they both were in it, but there were huge double standards in how they were treated IMO.

'Nobody bats an eyelid'!!! Madonna has been consistently hauled over the coals for pushing the envelope. Whether it be baring her midriff in 1982, to the infamous wedding dress Like A Virgin performance, to simulating masterbation on stage (it was better than it sounds), to the Justify My Love video, to Erotica, to SEX, and now every bit of flesh she bares, she's 'too old'. Nah, I'm not having that! I agree that ageism is rife in the industry and I semi agree that part of the backlash was because of her surname, but we all know it was deliberate and therefore a stupid thing to do.

It was totally deliberate and choreographed to cause a controversy. It was a publicity stunt designed to cause a stir, but they obviously didn't anticipate how uptight middle America can be and it blew up in their faces. Especially Janets.
