Just curious of your thoughts on this.
Are there any artists that you love musically but don't think highly of what you know of them as a person?
Do the personality traits of an artist influence whether you can enjoy/buy their songs?
Have you ever NOT purchased an album etc because of what you have heard about them as a person?

Yup. John Lennon was an absolute bastard, a complete hypocrite, bully and abuser. But he's still one of my favourite artists.
Kanye is also brilliant.
Rock and Roll by Gary Glitter is still a brilliant song too.

I always wondered how I would have reacted if MJ would have been guilty. I'm pretty sure I'd have kept listening.
I'm not cutting off my nose to spite my face.

I still enjoy talking to Tony, I know he's not a music artist, but it goes to show you can still derive enjoyment from people despite massive levels of assholery.  |

Depends on what level of asshole.
For example, Prince was said to be sometimes rude to his fans, arrogant etc. That won't make me stop listening to someone, though.
I pretty much boycott KISS though, for Gene Simmons' comments. Not that I was ever a huge fan so it isn't too difficult to me to avoid KISS.
So I guess depends on what the asshole behavior is about. There are things I can tolerate and there are things that I can't.

I couldn't listen to Elvis Presley's music when I knew how old Priscilla was when he got involved with her and allegedly more minor teenage girls. People love to crucify and call Michael a child molester but people rarely call out Elvis' inappropriate relationship with Priscilla.

Yeah. Honestly I've noticed If I already like them I tend to just separate the art from the artist anyway.
- John Lennon? Despite making a notable effort to change as he got older, Lennon was quite a dick when he was younger but dude is legitimately still one of *the* greatest musicians ever and a favourite of mine. I'd go absolutely mental if I could never hear another Beatles record again for the rest of my life.
- Kanye West has his dick moments but frankly I never really cared.
- Prince? Well I've heard he's quite a dick, treated his staff poorly in the 80s/90s but yeah I'll still play him.
- Elvis? There's the creepy thing with Priscilla but he's still one of my most favourite rock'n'rollers. I almost never think of it when I'm playing his material.
I've noticed it's mainly artists I just don't care for already where I won't play them because of their personal life. I remember a while ago on some random shuffled Spotify playlist, Gary Glitter came on. I didn't know who he was so I wikipedia'd him, saw he was a pedophile and nope'd right out of there, I have no intention of playing his material. Gene Simmons? Well he's quite the cunt so I've avoided KISS material, but I don't listen to KISS so it's not hard (then again, he's only one member of KISS - should the rest suffer because Gene is a dick?).
Maybe it's not the fairest approach, and maybe I'll change my attitude as I get older but this is just honestly how I've been so far 🤷♂️

Like Respect said it depends on what has transpired. I think as I've got older I've been able to separate music from artist more easily but there are exceptions.

Not sure about Elvis though. How do we know that those claims are true? If I remember correctly, Priscilla said that they didn't have sex or anything until she was 18. But I don't know very much about all these cases... I mean with Jimmy Saville, you have hundreds of victims coming out, credible witnesses etc. And Gary Glitter had child porn on his lap top which is definitely enough for me to believe it. |
