So, today marks the 33rd Anniversary of Madonna's "Like A Virgin" album.
I do genuinely enjoy this album, dated yes, but still holds up in part. You can't deny there is a world of filler, but it still has its charms. I particularly like the last two songs they make a set that ends the album well. I always felt LAV should have opened the album, Material Girl whilst good just isn't an opener, especially on the album to make you a star.
The only downside for me and what casts a shadow over this and to a lesser extent True Blue is the overall calculation. The set as a whole is aimed at making Madonna as big as possible and in some manner losers artistic merit. But as blockbuster pop albums go it is certainly a good if not great offering. Outside of the singles it seems to be almost largely forgotten or overlooked these days (but considering what was to come are we surprised).

Jesus - way to make me feel old. One of the very first albums I got (on cassette)
I'm not sure there is lots of filler
1. "Material Girl" 2. "Angel" 3. "Like a Virgin" 4. "Over and Over" 5. "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" 6. "Dress You Up" 7. "Shoo-Bee-Doo" 8. "Pretender" 9. "Stay" 10. Into The Groove
I love the 'lesser' tracks of Over & Over. Shoo-Bee-Doo is filler though.

I think Shoo-Bee-Doo, Pretender and Over & Over are all filler, so that's three songs out of ten, which isn't that bad going actually. I love her version of Love Don't Live Here Anymore. Nothing beats the Rose Royce original but Madonna does a good job I think.

This album definitely has filler, and I think the filler is worse than the filler on Madonna, more a collection of singles from 1981/83 whereas this was a concept album she had in the can by early 1984 and wanted it out earlier. But she had to wait due to the success of Lucky Star and Borderline.
Still the highlights of this album can not be denied and it made her a huge star. Unfortunately like 1984's other blockbuster (Purple Rain) I think it suffers from over exposure and has been played too many times.
My rankings KILLER 1. Like a Virgin - Just a classic and that video 2. Dress you up - I have always loved this song 3. Angel - This song has hidden depths and reminds me a lot of her later 80s stuff 4. Material Girl - This is a great song too 5. Into the Groove - Not on my CD, but from the era and I like it 6. Love don't live her any more - The depth and gravitas in her voice. I love vocal acrobatics
MEH! 7. Over and Over - definitely a lesser track, enjoyable but just a song
FILLER 8. Shoo Bee Doo - The melody and vocals are good, but a pretty go nowhere song 9. Stay - Yukky filler 10. Pretender - This is truly bad, sounds like a karaoke meets aerobics song. Does not belong here, Madonna's filler can be truly terrible, if Madonna just released EP's of 5 or 6 of the best songs, she would be untouchable instead of larding her albums down with filler.
It is actually my least favourite of the 4 1980s studio albums. The best two are Like a Prayer and True Blue, followed by Madonna in a respectable 3rd, but the filler and overheard hits just make it less of a favourite for me - sorry. I have not included You can dance or albums with like 1 - 3 new songs (Who's that girl and DSS soundtracks) and
There is almost no filler on True Blue and none on Like a Prayer.
The album has one funny memory for me though. My cousin who was a year younger than me, discovered Madonna with this album and got it a as gift for Christmas 1984, she was 7 and we listened to it (I was 8) and we were singing "Like a virgin, touch for the very first time" at our Christmas get together and the parents were all having kittens (The only thing I had listened to before was Michael Jackson and Culture Club) and we had no idea what Madonna was singing about - it was a just a cool song to us young kids not until much later did we realise she was singing about being f**ked.
