Lol. It's a heavy record. Maybe he's sitting, rocking in the corner of a dark room.

I'm listening to Boys For Pele now. Finding it hard work but it's interesting and it would probably take a few listens to get into. Hey Jupiter has an almost Purple Rain moment. Professional Widow is a different song to the remix! Like competely different, there's even lyrics in it.! Liking it from around track 8 where the tempo picks up a bit. Talula is superb. Not the Red Baron is beautiful. This has gotten better the further in I'm going. I always wondered how Amos fans feel about that awful remix, especially as I reckon that's what she's known best for in the U.K. it was a huge number one. The only song I really know and love of hers is Cornflake Girl (the full version).

Tony, you really need to check out her work. BTW, I'm disappointed you didn't bite to my "real Queen of Pop" jibe - that was for your benefit.

Azzaabb - Did Boys For Pele scare you off? Your silence is deafening. Heya fellah. No, in fact I bought physical copies of Little Earthquakes, Pele and Choir Girl last week in a secondhand 3-for-5 quid purchase in That's Entertainment! I'm just up the walls right now and also Pet Shop Boys released the next 3 album reissues of their Further Listening series -8 discs worth of material- so I had to get those also and give them a spin. This is a crazy month for me and Tori Amos is one of those artists I to give time to. Possibly after next week I'll get to the next 2 on the recommended list then I will stay with those 5 for many months. I dont like to consume everything at once because it would be a complete overload. I'm still here just mad busy.

They took like 2 words from the song and put a beat behind it. Edit] I couldn't multi quote and I've quoted myself here, weirdly.

Sounds like a cool plan... that's kinda what I do when I get into an artist or band with a large back catalogue. It's part of the joy about being of this generation. Okay, we may have missed out on living through a lot of the best music, but it's such a trip to be able to delve into an artists catalogue and have sustained listening for months on end, as you slowly get to know each release. Keep us posted!

Will do! Will pick up a few more of her albums on cd in a few weeks also. I do love a physical format. Love the booklet for Choir Girl.

Spent the afternoon listening to the new album.
Initial thoughts, it's a mixed bag. There's some really heavy stuff here, the songs about her mother are gut wrenching. she hasn't sounded this vulnerable and exposed since Choirgirl. Songs like Reindeer King and Mary's Eyes, you almost feel like you're intruding on someone's private grief. It makes for unsettling, uncomfortable listening, in the same way songs like Me And A Gun or Playboy Mommy make you feel.
Some of the other songs feel a little underdeveloped in places. Like she had a good seed of an idea for a song, but didn't have the time to properly flesh it out or something. Overall, I think this is a weaker release than Unrepentant Geraldines, the standard of songwriting just isn't as strong and there a few too many songs that just seem to pass you by without making much of a distinct impression.
Having said that, there is a definite mood to the album, it's not as all over the place as Unrepentant Geraldines, and there is a definite cohesion linking the songs together. And Bats is fucking genius. Anyone who can sing the periodic table and give me goosebumps is a genius in my eyes.

^ I, too, have been listening to Tori's new album. I have to say, I'm really enjoying it. It's a very personal album, you can hear the heartbreak she is going through concerning her mother's declining health. Very powerful, very sad.
I think I'd go as far as to say I prefer it to her last albums (Unrepentant Geraldines, American Doll Posse and Abnormally Attracted to Sin), but probably not as much as Night of Hunters or Beekeeper.
My favourites on the album so far:
Climb Mary's Eyes Reindeer King Wildwood Bang
Least favourites? Probably Chocolate Song and Bats. Or Benjamin. But even my least favourites are good, just not up there for me.

Interesting thoughts on her new album. I was only looking at it yesterday as I briefly popped into a record shop I was passing. There's a standard and deluxe editions. I liked the artwork and extra photos in the deluxe but the tracklist was the exact same as the standard. Does it offer anything extra apart from the extra pictures?
I'm gonna give Choirgirl a spin again tomorrow and read along to the lyrics.

Tori is a bit like Prince in the sense that she has a tonne of shit-hot b-sides (some of which have been amongst her finest work). She used to put them out on her singles in the 90s, but when the singles market dried up, she started putting the b-sides as bonus tracks on the deluxe editions of her albums. ^ I, too, have been listening to Tori's new album. I have to say, I'm really enjoying it. It's a very personal album, you can hear the heartbreak she is going through concerning her mother's declining health. Very powerful, very sad. It's not as immediate as Unrepentant, but I have to say, its grown on me considerably, and I recede my previous comment that the songwriting isn't as strong on this album. I generally think she always delivers the goods, I honestly haven't disliked a single album she's made, but obviously some resonate stronger than others. I usually feel a bit ambivalent towards her new albums on a first few listens, and then after multiple listens I start to fall in love. Same thing happens with every Tori album for me. I'm always disappointed at first that it doesn't sound like her previous record, and then I give it a few more spins and it all starts to make sense. I have to say, this is probably the first Tori album in a while where I have genuinely loved every song, including the bonus ones. I honestly wouldn't do without a single track.

I agree that Tori's albums are generally not too accessible upon the first listen. After a couple listens, though, it really kicks in. It's almost like a fossil... pushing away the sand of our expectations to finally reach the beautiful structure beneath it all. It's actually something I like about Tori, and once you "get her" you can't see how you never did.
