I agree that Tori's albums are generally not too accessible upon the first listen. After a couple listens, though, it really kicks in. It's almost like a fossil... pushing away the sand of our expectations to finally reach the beautiful structure beneath it all. It's actually something I like about Tori, and once you "get her" you can't see how you never did. That's a great analogy actually Liberian Girl.

Native Invader is my favourite Tori album since Scarlet's Walk some 15 (15!) years ago. Well done girl.

What are your favourite tracks, Cloudbuster? Bit too soon to say but I don't dislike any of them.

So yesterday I booked tickets to see Tori for the eighth time! She's opening every show with iieee, which is my all time favourite T song, so I'm pretty hyped about it.
Three weeks to go....

Interesting thoughts on her new album. I was only looking at it yesterday as I briefly popped into a record shop I was passing. There's a standard and deluxe editions. I liked the artwork and extra photos in the deluxe but the tracklist was the exact same as the standard. Does it offer anything extra apart from the extra pictures? I'm gonna give Choirgirl a spin again tomorrow and read along to the lyrics. Azzaabb, the deluxe has two bonus tracks. Tori is a bit like Prince in the sense that she has a tonne of shit-hot b-sides (some of which have been amongst her finest work). She used to put them out on her singles in the 90s, but when the singles market dried up, she started putting the b-sides as bonus tracks on the deluxe editions of her albums. ^ I, too, have been listening to Tori's new album. I have to say, I'm really enjoying it. It's a very personal album, you can hear the heartbreak she is going through concerning her mother's declining health. Very powerful, very sad. I think I'd go as far as to say I prefer it to her last albums (Unrepentant Geraldines, American Doll Posse and Abnormally Attracted to Sin), but probably not as much as Night of Hunters or Beekeeper. My favourites on the album so far: Climb Mary's Eyes Reindeer King Wildwood Bang Least favourites? Probably Chocolate Song and Bats. Or Benjamin. But even my least favourites are good, just not up there for me. It's not as immediate as Unrepentant, but I have to say, its grown on me considerably, and I recede my previous comment that the songwriting isn't as strong on this album. I generally think she always delivers the goods, I honestly haven't disliked a single album she's made, but obviously some resonate stronger than others. I usually feel a bit ambivalent towards her new albums on a first few listens, and then after multiple listens I start to fall in love. Same thing happens with every Tori album for me. I'm always disappointed at first that it doesn't sound like her previous record, and then I give it a few more spins and it all starts to make sense. I have to say, this is probably the first Tori album in a while where I have genuinely loved every song, including the bonus ones. I honestly wouldn't do without a single track. Superb. I gave Choirgirl another listen and its a stunning album actually, quite beautiful. The only problem for me right now is that I began to check her out during one of the busiest periods of my life. Like right now her new album is out and -I could give it a listen I guess- but I don't want to suffocate myself. "Stop taking yourself so fucking seriously Aaron and just listen when you can listen!" I knew she'd be one of those artists who has a plethora of B-sides as good as -if not better- than album tracks! Tis a whole Tori universe! I've enjoyed your thoughts on her new work.

Yeah, Choirgirl really spoke to me when I was teen, with all my angst and stuff. I got bullied at school really bad (this was before I became an internationally successful moderator of my own MJ message board) and songs like iieee and Spark really spoke to me. I've been dying to see her perform iieee for years as it's probably my favourite ever Tori song, but despite having seen her seven times previously she's never performed it at one of my shows. But she's now opening every night of the current tour with that song and I'm seeing her in three weeks, so my 15 year old self will finally get his dream realised.
Now she better not bloody change the setlist!!!
