I've always liked Bruno Mars, he's clearly a great singer songwriter, very talented & seems a nice guy to boot.
I really enjoyed his 24k Magic album. The production quality made me think of Thriller a few times. Listen to songs like Chunky and Versace On The Floor

I liked Uptown Funk, but I credit Mark Ronson for that more than Bruno Mars. I find his work by himself to be very derivative and uninspired.

Except for the fact that I don't particularly like Uptown Funk. I thought it was a bad pastiche, a novelty take aping the clichés of funk.

Aside from the fact it was possibly the most overplayed & used song of all time, UF is a fantastic song & one of the best pop hits of recent times.
I see that BM is greatly talented and for me he's a bit like Beyonce. Fully deserves the success etc. but something is missing to make me fully excited.
For example I can watch the videos when they come on and I'm transfixed for that time (Bruno's That's What I Like or Beyonce's once with baseball bat - Hold up?) but I'm not excited enough to buy an album etc...

People need to have certain amount of talent to do what Bruno does but can't help thinking he always seems to impersonate influential black artists, Michael especially. I've said before that there's nothing wrong with being inspired and influenced by the greats, Michael himself never shied away to talk about his inspirations and give them credit but he always had creativity and something to add on his own right. I've never seen that on BM.

He grew up being an Elvis impersonator, and he is really good at mimicking his idols, but he has no personality of his own to add to the mix and it shows in his performing and his songwriting.

Didn't he impersonate MJ too? I guess it's hard to add anything new if everything has been done before (and better). Bruno always reminds me of Off The Wall/Thriller MJ (looks, music, voice)

^^Yes, when he was older but not as a child like he did with Elvis.
That's why I was kind of pissed with the animated "MU" in the Halloween special, he looked more like BM than Michael Jackson from the Thriller era.

I like Bruno Mars and I have a number of his songs in my library... but admittedly he's never really 'stood out' for me from the other pop stars. Still, if a friend asked me along to his show I'd definitely go. That's why I was kind of pissed with the animated "MU" in the Halloween special, he looked more like BM than Michael Jackson from the Thriller era. Yeah, tbh he looked like a mix of 1983 Michael Jackson with Bruno Mars. I find it more hilarious than annoying though, probably because the whole special was a joke.
