Because of the recent Janet, Gaga and Madonna threads, I started listening to some R&B today and I'm absolutely loving The Writing's on the Wall by Destiny's Child.
Any recommendations for me? I didnt really like this music as a kid growing up, but really loving this. I have some Alicia Keys too. I have Beyonces debut too, which I like.
Going from Nine Inch Nails to the Janet album has been like going from a photo to it's negative.
My R&B timeline stops around 1990. Other than MJ, I never really heard anything I liked that was modern, other than Janet.

Didn't RNB as we know it die after they fused it with Hip Hop? Which I think started around the time Mary J Blige released her debut.

Check out Chaka Fucking Khan. And yes, that IS her middle name.
Listen to "Funk This" which is her most recent album. It is a quality funk/soul/R&B album, produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
She also did a great little record produced by Prince in 1998 called "Come 2 My House", which is very Prince-ish, but Chaka's vocals, as always, steal the show.
Her 70/80s shit is sublime, but if you're looking for more modern sounding R&B, then those two albums are definitely worth a listen.

I've been meaning to give her a go since Standing in the Shadows of Motown

Some classic 60s R&B you can never go wrong with is Percy Sledge, he had one huge hit with "When a Man loves a woman" but put out 4 solid albums in the late 60s and had an amazing voice, songs like Warm and Tender Love, Take time to know her, My special prayer, It tears me up are just incredible, plus he does an incredible version of "Tell it like it is" the old Aaron Neville song. This is soul to the bone, authentic R&B and classic 1960s stuff. He could make Otis and Sam Moore tremble.
