there was a time when it was a game changer to have a rapper on a R&B track or a Pop track to make it have appeal and to fit into a different lane.
think about Jennifer Lopez's peak and Prime as J Lo.
so is this needed or did it hurt said Product?

I think with artists like MJ and Prince, it came off as a little try-hard and I don't really think it achieved the desired effect, as I can't imagine many early-90s Rap/Hip-Hop fans rushing out to buy Dangerous or Diamonds & Pearls just because they brought in a rapper in some misguided attempt to appear "street."
And it only looked more desperate the older they got, with MJ becoming a middle aged dad and Prince a devout JW. There is something wholey unconvincing about the rap cameos on Invincible for instance.

Hell naw, I hate it when good R&B songs, especially those with great singing and vocalists are ruined by Mr or Mrs Rapper. I think straight away of the 1st 3 songs on Invincible, all good enough with Michael singing in that Frenzied tenor he does and then ruined by slip shod rapping. We need not mention now what Tony M did to Prince in the early 90s.
I think all of us who like singing as opposed to talking shit at a looped in drum machine beat will answer similar. I get put off with the fact 90% of today's pop and R&B songs have "Feat" in their title. Can't people do their own shit anymore.
Great songs and great singers will always endure (Look at Michael Jackson and Prince for example), but rap is a trend and genres of rap date quickly, like within weeks. An album like Thriller or Whats going on, There's a riot going on and Songs in the Key of Life for example will never date.

It depends on the song really. Some songs fit having a guest rapper, others don't. It also depends on who's rapping. Notorious BIG is a good addition to Unbreakable for example, whereas Fats isn't so much.
Most of the time I was fine with Michael doing it, except the first few tracks of Invincible where the opening three all had raps. A lot of musicians were against rap but I was glad to see Michael was open to it.

I would have much preferred the instrumental bridge for She Drives Me Wild. Also, aside from Unbreakable, the raps on Invincible are terrible.
I actually like the rap in 2Bad funny enough.

I don't have any issue with any of the Dangerous or HIStory raps. It never occurred to me either at the time or since that they were gimmicky or desparate. What I guess was a little gimmicky, was the way the rap was visualised in the BoW video, but that suited at the time also as a fun segment. But yes, on Invincible the three raps in the first three tracks was overload.

There's only one thing I hate more than rap music, and that's raps in MJ songs.
Not one rap on any of his songs actually adds anything to the music. It is part of the reason why his post-80s albums mark a decline in quality, as he became too concerned with chasing trends as opposed to just making honest-to-God great music.

It is so funny that nearly all of us focussed on those 3 opening cuts on Invincible, where the rapping ruins the momentum. I mean Michael is fine and even good in Unbreakable - but the rappers aargh!!. Agree too the Rap on Dangerous (Except Black or white) and HIStory is decent, even Shaq is passable.
Rapping and producers need to go, look at the remixing on BODF, Afrojack and Pitbulls mash ups on Xscape and Bad25!
Still MJ's use of rapping is a million times better than the rappers Prince had - Some dude called Scrap D - "Grab the condoms and Bacardi, lets party" and Doug E Fresh's rap "Macular, Spectacular, better than a new accura". 99 also ruins Emancipation with scrap D "Dead like Elvis" and the whole rap on Joint to Joint with the "Sex me". I won't say Tony M, some of his rapping is atrocious (Goldnigga, My name is Prince, Jughead), but some of it is decent - Live 4 Love, Continental, The Flow and Push. TC Ellis was a dreadful rapper too (New Power Generation Part 2" but most of Prince's rapping was decent along with Cat's (Days of Wild is easily his best rap - he really gets it).
Also I think, because Tony M was actually part of the NPG between 1990 and 1993 and even camoed on Purple Rain breakdancing with Damon Dickson and Kirky J. Also because he did a great interview with the Peach and Black guys, and came across as a really nice normal guy (Tony gave up rap and has a good day job as an Accountant!)
