I guess the criteria was for a song to be political, but I don't feel any of these songs are really world-changing. For something to be world changing, they need to be famous as a first thing. Not saying, these are obscure, of course people know the French anthem when they hear the melody, for example, but I am not sure if it means the same for everyone. France was a colonizer...
I like "A Change Is Gonna Come" but its selection seems a bit random to me. They could have picked dozens of other songs, some more famous, about the same subject.
And there are some songs I don't even know. Maybe that speaks of my ignorance, but then maybe they aren't that famous.

To me, that song is a lot less obscure than "A Change Is Gonna Come."
I think Thriller should be on there. Even though the song is not one of MJs best, its the title track to the best selling album of all time, with the most famous and celebrated music video of all time. As a whole package, it's probably the most influencial song of the modern pop era.
And how about a song like Johnny B Goode? I mean, there would be no Sex Pistols if a certain Mr Chuck Berry hadn't pioneered a little thing called RockNRoll.

And there are some songs I don't even know. For those of you who don't know and can't be bothered reading the article (Apologies if you do know and feel insulted) 1. La Marseillaise - French National Anthem based on French Revolution and the overthrowing of the Royal Family and the setting up of the rights of man. 2. Nkosi Sekelil iAfrika - South African National anthem until ANC Black rule, sang during apartheid era by black protestors wanting to end Afrikaner rule and racism. Mandela adopted it as South Africa's new national anthem. 3. March of the Women - Composed in 1910 as a Suffragettes anthem in the UK and adopted by USA. Ironically my country gave women the vote in 1893, the first COUNTRY to do so (Before all you Americans scream about Wyoming in 1868) 4. Strange Fruit - A anti lynching song sung by Billie Holiday in 1939, about the rise of lynchings of Black men in the south. The song is haunting, evocative and beautifully sung by her. 5. A Change is going to come - A Sam Cooke song about Black Civil rights and how the chnage will be the end of segregation and discrimination of American citizens based on their race. 6. I am what I am - song adopted by Gays and Lesbians in their struggle for equal rights in the 1970s, done by many singers, but famously by Gloria Gaynor and Shirley Bassey. 8. Free Nelson Mandela - a song by British two tone group the Specials - which was part of the global movement against Apartheid and the unjustified imprisonment of the Madiba. It was a massive hit on many charts including NZ and the UK where it was #1 in 1984 and really drew more people into the movement against apartheid in South Africa. All 7 of these songs deserve their place for the fact they all represented struggles of the people over tyranny and oppression, but teh Sex Pistols at #7 does not deserve this rank, a pile of disrespectful and poorly made shite by some of the most disreputable and terrible people ever. Sorry it sucks and adding it to this. All the other songs are pulses for people trying to destory some form of oppression and discrimination against either racism, class, labour, the franchise, rights and recognition. What is Sex Pistols for some grubby little snots who hate the Queen and disrespect their authority and power? It is good such as a list, as it shows music can have the power to change minds and make the world a better place. As much as MJ's conscience songs like Heal the World and Earth Song are important, none quite were instrumental in the overthrowing of dsicrimination and tyrannical regimes (Eg Apartheid, Nazis, Jim Crow, Killing Gays), although I feel TDCAU is an excellent protest song. James Brown - I am Black and I am proud, is a great song for its instilling of Black Pride, but did not really sing of ending discrimination and peace and came in 1968, after the main period of the Civil rights era.
