I often wonder, if he had recorded another album after Invincible, what would it have sounded like and who would he have worked with.
It all went very quiet on the will.I.am front after 2006 and part of me suspects MJ wasnt too impressed with their sessions together. Of course, that is just speculation.
The only song we've heard since his passing that I could realistically see him working to completion is Hollywood Tonight. I think that could've been an MJ classic had he of finished it up. Most of the rest of the songs we've heard posthumously would most likely have remained unreleased and wouldn't have been included on a new album. There's no way already leaked tracks from years ago like Xscape, Hold My Hand or Blue Gangster would've been given an official release. And if songs like DYKWTCA, Slave To The Rhythm and Behind The Mask never made it onto MJs last few albums, it is unlikely they would've shown up on a post Invincible release.
So which direction do you think he would've taken and who do you think he would've worked with? Do you think it would've been better than Invincible?

I agree that Hollywood Tonight had the makings of a great MJ track. I preferred the origial demo to Teddy Rileys version on the Michael album. It has a darker, edgier vibe to it, which Riley undermined in his version.
I like to think the song would've made the cut on the next MJ album.
As for the direction he would've taken, your guess is as good as mine. I would've liked to have seen him embrace a more organic sound, with more real instruments and less reliance of drum machines and synths. It would've been cool to see him do something funky again. I always thought he should've done a cover of James Browns Say It Loud (I'm Black And I'm Proud). What a great middle finger that would've been to his critics, and a fitting tribute to one of his musical heroes.

In all honesty, I've no idea. Michael often took things in different, unexpected directions. I wish we had the chance to find out.
I always wanted Michael to do some kind of theme/theatrical album...like a selection of songs that tell a whole story.
I think he could have written a fantastic musical or classical album of some kind. His talent is so diverse.

I really don't know either, all we can do is speculate (...which I guess this thread is for haha). I guess I always liked considering the contemporisations on Xscape to be an approximate guess at what a 2014 Michael Jackson song would sound like. I liked most of the contemporisations on there

Fair enough. Makes me wonder how we'd react if we heard snippets of Invincible in the mid 1990s. I'm sure some of us would say these can't pass as MJ songs. Who knows where he'd go with his music

The criteria I have for whether a song passes as MJ-sounding or not is if I can visualize him wanting to dance to it. I can imagine MJ taking one listen to Timbalands reimagining of Blue Gangster like:

It seems MJ wanted to do a feel good album and not a HIStory style album. This album was really important for him and it's too bad we'll never get to hear what he visioned. I imagine it would have had a lot of dancing hits.

In saying that, I do really like the opening of Timbaland's version though.

Wasn't 'Hold My Hand' originally scheduled for release in 2008? I believe the leak prevented that from happening.
It was rumoured that Michael was actually moving away from the album format. That he was planning to release a string of individual singles over the course of the 'This Is It' concerts. He would eventually add them to the set-list. 'Best Of Joy' being one of them.
It's all speculation of course, but I love that idea! 'Best Of Joy' would have been a beautiful parting gift that ties in with the everlasting theme of 'The Man' and that Peter Pan song in the unauthorized interview from '83/'84. It manages to be upbeat and sombre and reflective. The vocals are what really blew me away. It was the freest he'd sounded in a long time. Joy is in the title and the spirit!
Based on the message left on the intro for the altered version of 'The Way You Love Me', Michael intended to return to that song. It had number one written all over it, and should have been completed sooner! I can't recall a time where he was so melodic and playful!
I actually liked the production of the 'Michael' album. I felt that Michael's sound had been updated - particularly on the dance tracks. The prominent beat-boxing helped with this. I can definitely see him moving to them! Though it's unclear whether or not Michael would have chosen those particular tracks to make the final cut, I think it resulted in a varied selection that his music was known for having.
We know that he was working on some Classical material as well. It would be interesting to hear how far he got with that..
He wanted to go into film too.
It's good to know that he still had creative ambitions.

I don't think MJ deliberately being provocative and courting controversy would've been a wise career move at that point in his life.

I would have liked MJ to go with in a new direction with his music, still sounding very creative and fresh cause that's what he does lol Or maybe it would have been more auto-biographical with everything that happened to him in the previous years.. who knows. I just wish he would have had the chance to complete whatever project was dear to him.

I think part of the problem MJ had post 90s was that too many people, producers, label execs and outside songwriters, thought they knew best as to what MJ should sound like. MJ didn't need their help to create masterpieces in the past, and he wouldn't have needed their help to create great music in the future.
Most of the time, patchy or unfocused records from otherwise great artists are a result of label bosses interefering with the creative process and telling the artist how they should sound, rather than letting the artist be guided by their muse.

Wasn't there a song written by John Legend that MJ supposedly was working on? There was even a title, although the name escapes me now.
I would love to have heard that. I'm not especially a fan of Will.I.am's own music but he produces quite good material for other people. He did a gorgeous song on John Legends second album called Coming Home, which always reminded me of something MJ could've recorded.

I can imagine something like Beyoncรฉ's Lemonade - something innovative and something close to his activism (children and environment).
