I used to follow her career quite closely, but lost interest after the Emancipation of Mimi (mediocre album, with a few good singles).
I think Mariah did a fantastic run of pop/R&B albums with Butterfly/Rainbow/Glitter/Charmbracelet.
The last two albums in particular are very underrated, especially Charmbracelet. Check out Mariah's beautiful rendition of Def Leppards Bringin On The Heartbreak:
And there's this classic diss track aimed at Eminem:
And Through The Rain is surely one of her finest ballads - she creates absolute magic with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis:
And Rainbow contains some of my all time favourite Mariah songs, especially this gorgeous track (again, a Jam & Lewis production):

I think I liked her album titles better when it was all "Pixies" and "Unicorn". "Me, I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse" has to be one of the worst album titles ever.

For me, Mariahs dip in quality is unrivalled, even when compared to Oasis.
Music Box is her best. It helped make 1992/3 golden years in pop for me (Dangerous, Erotica, Janet, Music Box). Daydream was okay and then she turned herself into an R&B sex kitten, acquired this horrible breathy style of singing and lost all sense of melody.
Not heard one good song since 1995. And yes, I Am Mariah....is the worst album title ever.

Even if you don't like her R&B stuff, there's still plenty of great singles she released after 95, such as Thank God I Found You, Through The Rain, We Belong Together, My All, Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme).

All I know is, she sang the hell out of Cherelle's Didn't Mean To Turn You On.

I love Daydream, Emotions and Butterfly. They are ones of the best 90s albums.
And I really like her first album, Music Box, Rainbow, and Charmbracelet (and btw, I think, as a vocalist, the Charmbracelet era was the best).
I also really like the singles for the Emancipation of Mimi and the Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (Strangely, as a lamb, I have never could to these albums).
Never That Far Away is a great song and reminds me so much of my childhood.

I chose Butterfly as my number one, the title track is worth the admission price alone. Her vocals on that song are like pure silk, and the rest is very good too. Mariah peaked between that and the album before, Daydream, which I could have sex with it is that good. "Fantasy, One Sweet Day, Underneath the Stars" - I mean wow.
I really like 1991's Emotions and 1993's Music Box too. 1999's Rainbow is okay, but we are getting a bit too rappy and the one off single with Whitney "when you believe" is gold.
We forget how much of a diva she was in the 1990s, and she was one of the artists that helped me come out and embrace my gayness with her fabulosity (I used to do drag queen lipsynchs to her hits). The others were Kylie Minogue and Ms Whitney Houston, with her song about men filling her up.
I also chose the first album, as I feel that thing is untouchable. I just play "Love takes time to heal", and "I don't wanna cry" over and over again, I never get enough of those songs and the rest is great too. When I first heard "Vision of Love in 1990", I just thought "Who the fuck is this bitch, that voice is just incredible". I remember playing "I don't wanna cry" on some school trip in 91 and this girl was looking at me with I want you eyes and all I could care about was how fabulous the song was, (She obvious did not know, I wanted Gurlfriends, not Girlfriends and chasing some guy obsessing over Mariah's talent rather than her titties was not going to get her a man). She got the hint when I looked at her face rather than her breasts. Women always know, us gay bitches have the class that many teenage straight guys lacked.
90s Mariah could not put a foot wrong, but then "Glitter" came along and it was bye, still 90s was her decade, this woman was everywhere and she could sang, although I loved 2005s Mimi album and "We belong together" is recapturing her 90s greatness.

Triumph, you should give Glitter another go, despite the terrible film, it is actually a solid soundtrack. Her versions of Last Night A DJ Saved My Life and Didn't Mean To Turn You On are gay heaven! It's by far her campest record of all. And the ballads are sublime too, especially Lead The Way and Never Too Far Away.

Okay then, I will find this shit and give it a spin. You are right, the movie left a bad taste in my mouth. I like diva - ey women but Mariah has taken it to new extremes, she is entirely up her own ass.

Just blasting my Mariah's greatest hits today, sometimes I just want the best of her. None of it has lost her magic. My 22 year old neighbours got a big surprise when they got blasted with "Vision of Love" and "Emotions" at 7.30am this morning. They are unemployed and play that doof doof type dance music and shitty pop rap all the time.
Those songs are early 1990s and yet still sound fresh. Tommy Mottola spared no expense with taping his girlfriend's vocals back in the 90s.
Russg, you know since you bought our Mariah, I have to do a Whitney Houston thread now. This borard has been around for 8 months and I can not believe anyone has mentioned her, the premiere singer of the 1985/95 period.

The one with My All on it That would be 1997's Butterfly with the hit singles Honey, Butterfly My all and Sweetheart on it. The last has an irresistable rap cameo by Jay Z on it, back whe he was still on the way up (Early Jay Z is incredible).
