Yes this is unashamedly piggybacking off the superb Mariah Carey thread here. She is an artiste we have not really attacked yet with music.
Please guys I ask iof we just discuss her music and talent, because Whitney Houston was an amazing talent, try not to go on about Crack, Bobby Brown, her decline, problems or Bobbi Cristina dying, if you want to talk mess on her, start your own thread. I want to keep strictly on her music, albums, talent and the superb quality of her songs. And yes I know she didn't write, so I don't want to hear crap about that either.
Whitney Houston (1963 - 2012) had a short but memorable life, a neice of Cissy Houston and a family known in Showbiz circles, she was modelling and signed by Clive Davis to Arista in 1983, In early 1985 she released her first eponymous album, which was slow to start, but the 3rd single, the sublime "Saving all my love for you" introduced the world to her voice and presence. The single was a smash #1 hit in the USA and 2 more #1 smashes followed. the album shipped over 10 million, making it one of the greatest selling debuts in the process. Pretty much Whitney Houston was the break out star of the mid 1980s vaulting straight into that pantheon of super successful African American entertainers of that era with Michael Jackson, Prince, Lionel Richie, Diana Ross and 1986's other breakthrough Janet Jackson.
In 1987 came her second album called Whitney and it again sold even more copies than the debut, some 12 million copies and had 3 number 1 hits including the iconic "I wanna dance with somebody (Who loves me)" and more Top 10 singles. In 1988 she socred with One Moment in Time based around the 1988 Olympics. In 1989 she took a year off and came back with 1990's I'll be your baby tonight which had a more contemporary R and B sound next to the forthy 80s pop sound of her first two albums. Not as successful, but still having 2 number 1 smashes and selling close to 8 million copies. In 1992/92 she starred as Rachel Marron in the Bodyguard and the soundtrack album had many massive hits by her on it, including her version of Dolly Parton's "I will always love you" which was number one over the world for like 13 or 14 weeks and was the longest #1 in History until One Sweet Day by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men, two more African American acts who had stolen some of Whitney's thunder in the early 1990s. 3 more Top 10 hits and the #1 smash I have nothing.
The album went through 92 ands 93 giving her song of the year in both years, and 1995 she was back with Waiting to exhale. After the bodyguard however she had more hits with 1998s "My love is your love" which again sold 8 figures world wide. In all her first 4 albums had moved over 100 million copies worldwide and that is before we count all the number one hits.
However clouds appeared on the horizon with her hooking up with Bobby Brown in 1989, who was riding high from his New Edition success and the solo album Don't be cruel which was moving volume, but not Whitney numbers, as her career exploded through the 90s, Bobby's died off, having no hits after 1992. Bobby gave her a daughter and an incredibly fucked up drug addiction which ruined her life. Whitney probably did crack around 1993 and was using it through her last 19 years of life, despite her attempts to kick it.
The hits dried up after 2002 and it was her legacy she was trading on, Whitney got more and more tragic and it was sad. However in 2009 Clive Davis tried to clean her up and put her back on the straight and narrow, she had her acting career revived and made a new album called "I look to you" which sold 2.5 million worldwide, much better than 2002's bomb, Just Whitney which sold under a million. But her biggest sellers in the 2000s and 2010s were various greatest hits sets and catalogue sales of her earlier albums. However she showed up late for performances, either stoned or too ill and it was too much. Tragically her end came in Feb 2012 when she was found dead in a hotel bathtub before she was to perform. Even sadder was her young daughter was found dead in similar circumstances 5 years later.
Now let us celebrate Ms Whitney Houston and her music.
