Bad seemed like a natural progression from Thriller. Around The World In A Day is a complete head scratcher.
What do Prince fans think of this one? I remember long ago going from Purple Rain to this and being disappointed (expecting a more Purple Rain sound). I've come to love this album, and love the little odd numbers but I'm interested to see where this fits on mega-fans list?

Brilliant - another Prince thread!!!*
* Due to my strong personal convictions, I wish to stress that this post in no way endorses a bashing of Prince

Oh fuck off everyone keeps hanging out in the bloody Madonna thread! We could start another 'Live At The Forum' thread to try & win everyone back?

ATWIAD took me forever to get into, but when I eventually did, it really clicked. It's not just a complete U-turn from Purple Rain, it's also completely different from anything he'd ever done before and really not that similar to anything he did afterwards either. To me, The Ladder is one of the most beautiful songs he ever did. Try and check out some of the live versions he did in more recent years. They're really special.

Obviously I heard it before I heard anything pre-Purple Rain so I was coming from a different perspective. It seems like a very spiritual and introspective album, much more substance than a lot of his earlier stuff (not necessarily better). Really took me on a journey today listening

I don't know anything about this but I'm just commenting to say I agree the activity in the Madonna thread is disturbing at the very least.

Not a massive fan of this album as a whole, but I do love Pop Life and The Ladder.
1. Around the world in a day 7/10 - Good instrumentation, nice and experimental
2. Paisley park 6/10 Fun track, if a little throwaway
3. Condition of the heart 7/10 Not my favourite Prince ballad, but quirky and strange enough to entertain while I'm listening to it
4-rasberry beret - 7.5/10 Classic pop songwriting
5. Tambourine - 3/10 Pretentious
6. America - 5/10 Funky but not that great a song
7. Pop life - 9.5 One of my all time favourite Prince songs
8. The Ladder - 9/10 Beautifully written song
9. Temptation - 7/10 A cool song ruined by an awful ending
To me, ATWIAD much like Parade, is a good album but not a classic one. I applaud him for being a bit more creative but I think this album really alienated fans after Purple Rain.

I like the album just fine but ATWIAD is basically how you kill your own momentum. Probably one of boldest moves in 80s music scene. But looking objectively it just was not even half as good as Purple Rain. IMO everything he released in 80s (apart from 1999 and PR) had quite a lot of filler (including Sign O The Times and Lovesexy). And the highlights from his post PR albums did not measure up to the highlights from 1999 and PR.

Prince could have released 3 more Purple Rains but he didn't want to. You could nearly have made a very commercial Purple Rain sequel from the remaining 80's albums he released, so it's not like he couldn't have kept the wave going. More respect to him for it.
