I love it, one of his quirkiest and overall best. It had the bad luck to come out between two mammoths of Prince's, Purple Rain and Parade, along with the albums either side of those (1999 and SOTT), but this one still had enough gold to make me happy.
1. Around the world in a day 9/10 - I love this, all the instruments, soundscapes and an escape into another world of neo pscyhedelic funk. 2. Paisley Park 9ยฝ/10 - Love this super catchy cut too, Paislye Park was so influential he named his studio and record label after it. Listen to this and you will know why! 3. Condition of the Heart 9/10 - Very emotional piano ballad, a bit long but still great and again the yearning in his voice - I mean wow! 4. Raspberry Beret 10/10 - I love, love, love this - catchy as all hell, a perfect pop confection and who can not find the lyrics and video cool. This is just great. 5. Tambourine 7/10 - and this is where perfection ends. This is an okay song overall, if some what a bit silly and I like the innuendo, just not as tight as the rest. 6. America 8/10 - More preaching after the porn, Prince puts his conservative agenda of the time out, but it is just so funky and the 23 minute mix on the Maxi single is even better (That gets 10/10, but you get only 4 minutes here). 7. Pop Life - 9ยฝ/10 - Another great pop song with throuyght provoking lyrics. Great beat and melody, but I like RB more. 8. The Ladder - 8ยฝ/10 - Not the most sonically pleasing song, but still good musically, what sells it is the lyrics and singing of the girls in the background. the message is sincere - all that glitters is not gold. This song however does glitter 9. Temptation - 7ยฝ/10 - The only real mistake here, starts of well enough and is quite funny, lots of raunch and screaming, but the whole thing gets carried away in a sea of grunts, shrieks and soulscreamstaken2extremes with God speaking to him. Had Prince hit the cut button a bit earlier it may have done better.
I think many Purple Rain newbies went off him as this sounded nothing like that album and had a more laid back pop feel. I still think its great though and if anything bridged the gap from the crowd pleasing rock sound of Purple Rain, towards his funkier and dancier more edge pop and R&B/funk. I think anyone should listen to it, it is accessible and like anything by Prince, funky and thought provoking.

Oh fuck off everyone keeps hanging out in the bloody Madonna thread! Of course we do, we are Michael Jackson fans, there is a very high chance we will either also be fans of Prince or Madonna or in mine and many other's case - both of them. They are the big 3 of the 80s. This is a wonderful place for quadgenarians like me to hang out and remember the decade when we were skinny, smelt good and had fun with music and could understand the shit. I myself love it, having not the guts to join the bitter bitchvilles called Madonna fan sites and smarting from being booted out of Prince.org

^I think it was artistically bold but also a smart move to release something experimental. Although he held back or gave away some great material that was more 'PR-esque', there's just no way to match the type of once-in-a-lifetime success that Purple Rain had. Any attempt to try and match or outdo it with an album in a similar style would always have been seen as a failure. ATWIAD was just something completely different, not something aimed at being a massive commercial success, and thus could not even really be compared to PR. I can also imagine a release like that, which is clearly a hype-killer, must be liberating for an artist. You can go out and perform in front of an audience of fans that wants to see what you want to do again, rather than having to meet all the expectations of a massive mainstream audience. Bruce Springsteen has been open about the fact that he deliberately made the follow-up to his smash Born in the USA a scaled-back record for that reason. He had enough tracks in the vault to compile a Born in the USA 2 rock record, but decided to release an introspective, synth-driven album. With all that said, it's an average record for me too. I think Parade is much, much better. I like the album just fine but ATWIAD is basically how you kill your own momentum. Probably one of boldest moves in 80s music scene. But looking objectively it just was not even half as good as Purple Rain. IMO everything he released in 80s (apart from 1999 and PR) had quite a lot of filler (including Sign O The Times and Lovesexy). And the highlights from his post PR albums did not measure up to the highlights from 1999 and PR. Don't you think 1999 contains filler too? It contains some of my favorite Prince songs, but tracks like Let's Pretend We're Married, Automatic and Free? Naw. And the runtime on almost every song could be shaved down. Oh I adore those songs. 1999 is the first Prince album I bought I think when I was in my early teens, so I love it all the way through probably for nostalgic reasons. My top 3 Prince albums are as follows: 1) Purple Rain 2) 1999 3) Lovesexy I find Sign O' The Times to be too overrated especially in the fan community. It's a good record for sure. But there is no way I can listen to the whole album. I can't stand a good portion of the songs. It could have been an amazing single disc album though.

But now I'm curious

I think it's a good album (although I hate Temptation). Its definitely killed his momentum to a point, for sure. The Purple Rain Tour ended on April 7, 1985 and ATWIAD was released April 22, 1985. Add that there was no single for the album until May, I can see why the new/bandwagon fans slipped away and why Warner Bros was frustrated (I think I'm one of the few Prince fans who could see why WB was frustrated with dealing with him and agreed with them to an extent)
Raspberry Beret, Pop Life, America, Condition of The Heart, and The Ladder are some of my favorite songs. The live video of America......AMAZING

He could've easily put out an EP like this to keep the Purple Rain momentum going into late 85 1. All Day All Night 2. She's Always In My Hair 3. The Dance Electric 4. Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden 5. Possessed 6. Love and Sex
But he wanted to go in a different direction to expand his sound.
I find it cool he was already working on ATWIAD before the PR film and album was released. He was performing Condition of The Heart, America, and Raspberry Beret on the last dates of the Purple Rain tour, as a way to get fans ready for what was to come.

Possibly It and IBABN as they drag a bit but I can not see why anyone would not love the rest of that fantastic album. My favourites 1. Sign o the Times 2. 1999 3. Parade 4. Purple Rain 5. Lovesexy 6. Dirty Mind

Although Purple Rain has to take my number one, SOTT is his masterpiece as far as I'm concerned. It's his "Songs in the Key of Life". U Got The Look, Hot Thing, Forever in My Life, IGBABN, Sign O The Times. Not even to mention, probably the best concert film after The Last Waltz.

Also it does not help that my CD is terribly mastered with very low volume and it doesn't sound crisp where you can hear all the lows and highs clearly. Then again I bought it 10 years ago or something. The album must have been digitally remastered properly by now. My 1999 CD has the same problem
