This is one of my final Kazillion polls I have done the past 2 weeks.
Which are your 2 favourite greatest hits type albums. There are bazillions of Motown ones and it is obvious Motown as a milking a celebrity group drop another collection of J5/Solo MJ stuff each year and the quality varies from the hits, down to albums of obscure shit they recorded in 1968. hence I have elft them off. The special release albums will make another poll.
I have also excluded collections peculiar to one or a few countries only, but have allowed King of Pop, provided that you state which country's version it is. That leaves very few albums that make the cut.
I have allowed collections with alternatives like Ultimate and ones with only a few songs like Scream and realise many of these albums have reissues, add ons and international versions (Enhanced Japanese versions seems to be common)
Mine are 1. Ultimate Collection - just amazing 2. Number Ones - A lot of fun and just a funky shot of Michael gold. Close -HIStory begins - It started the whole Michael greatest hits craze.

I chose HIStory Continues and TUC as they are the only ones MJ himself had any involvement in. And of course, both of them came packaged with new songs/previously unheard material.

HIStory Begins because there are no radio edits and radio edits are the work of Satan.

HIStory Begins because there are no radio edits and radio edits are the work of Satan. Sure that’s true, but an MJ Greatest Hits with no Dirty Diana, Smooth Criminal not to mention the cream of Dangerous (WII, GITM, WYBT)... ...nah, that ain’t no best of.

That is the only problem with it - its incomplete which really makes the Essential Michael Jackson a good choice too, as its part of achain of budget re releases of greatest hits sets by legendary artists and they are good quality with authentic songs and no fluff. I also have the Whitney and Mariah ones which are basically their greatest hits albums from around 2000.
I say that as there are many DECEPTIVELY labelled Motown ones which can have as little as 8 songs and then only one maybe a hit or its a later re recorded mix or a live version that is poor. Motown has also issued mountains of bad greatest hits collections by their artists and there are at least 50 collections by Michael Jackson or the Jackson 5. The titles lead you to think you may be buying epic era Michael whe in fact you are getting his do an alternative mix of Zip a dee doo dah from Feb 1969.
I have also seen other mega poor quality pirated ones and the type of ghetto garage CD in plastic wrappers that cost like $7 and have 8 songs on them and none are hits. 20th century masters and legends of rock amongst a few. One disc from the USA with an import sticker is pne of these budget CDs and is being sold for $55 at our store as its "Rare USA import", in fact its a ghetto shop budget CD and has been sitting there for 3 years, this is the track listing.
1. Rockin Robin (Demo) 2. With a childs heart 3. Johnny Raven 4. Tired of dogging around 5. Maria you were the only one for me 6. Zip a dee doo dah 7. Petals (Demo) 8. Lookin thru the windows (Live 1972)
A few solo album tracks, unknown if they are album versions, some demos and a live song from an early J5 tour, probably complete with mono recording and screaming teenagers all over it. i would not pay $1 for that shit, let alone $55. And the cover has that 1969 shot of them with the small afros and Tito holding guitar and Michael in his bowler hat, you know the one.

Sure that’s true, but an MJ Greatest Hits with no Dirty Diana, Smooth Criminal not to mention the cream of Dangerous (WII, GITM, WYBT)... ...nah, that ain’t no best of. Yeah, Dangerous was criminally under-represented on HIStory Begins. Take off The Girl Is Mine, Remember The Time and She's Out Of My Life and replace them with Smooth Criminal, Dirty Diana and Who Is It and you'd probably have the perfect MJ greatest hits album. I really dislike Number Ones, which is just one long radio edit fest. Why they included Break Of Dawn, which never belonged on there anyway, is beyond me. Taking that track off would've meant they had room to fit in all the full length versions. But even then, yet again Dangerous is under-represented (BorW is the only track). I suppose outside of the lead single and Remember The Time, there weren't really any massive hit singles that people remember from Dangerous (most of the songs after RTT flopped in the US, although faired quite a bit better in the rest of the world). The unfortunate truth is, I don't think any of the Dangerous singles after BorW made the same kind of impact that the Thriller/Bad/HIStory singles made, which I guess explains why the album always gets shafted when these hit compilations come out. For me, a perfect one disc MJ Greatest Hits is almost impossible, but if I were in charge of creating one that represented both the biggest hits and his best work, this is something I'd come up with: 1. DSTYGE 2. Rock With You 3. Billie Jean 4. Beat It 5. Thriller 6. Bad 7. TWYMMF 8. Man In The Mirror 9. Smooth Criminal 10. Dirty Diana 11. Black or White 12. Who Is It 13. Heal The World 15. You Are Not Alone 16. Earth Song 17. They Don't Care About Us 18. You Rock My World ^^^ Sacrifices had to be made. No Scream kills me. I wanted BOTD on there, but felt like it was more important to have a track that represented Invincible. It pained me to keep TWYMMF and leave off Wanna Be Startin Somethin, but something had to give if I was going to fit it all onto one disc and although it isn't my favourite, I appreciate that TWYMMF is one of his most popular hits. Whether any self-respecting record label would agree to include a minor hit/hidden gem like Who Is It over a legitimate hit like Remember The Time is questionable, but hey, I'm in charge of this project, and this is a collection that I feel would satisfy both the casual MJ fan and hardcore alike.

True fact, Tim Peake, the UK astronaut, made a Best of MJ playlist for his travels on the rocket, however he too had to leave off Scream, as in space nobody could hear it.

There's definitely a time and place for radio edits. The edit for Black or White is definitive as it omits the kid and dad intro. I don't actually mind that intro on the album but if the song comes on or is on a Hits collection then give me the radio edit. From the list I'm going with The Ultimate Collection and King of Pop UK Deluxe 3 disc package. It's my absolute favourite hits collection. Also the King of Pop French fans edition.

Yetserday I saw that album was there and told a salesgirl about it, and she got her manager as she was Chinese and could not understand "Fast English". The manager said it was super rare and any MJ fan would want it, I told as an MJ superfan it was a cheaply made compilation by some US company using lapsed song copyrights and that all the songs were alternative mixtures of lesser album tracks. . He then said it was a US only marketed one, and I said of course as it would be too much cost for the budget maker to market them worldwide and it was designed to be sold at a truckstop in Tuscaloosa. He said he could not do anything as head office in Australia controlled pricing. I then asked him if he had heard of Dan Bell and his dead mall series, and then told him that when our mall is abandoend by 2030, this shop will be a shell and that CD will still be there. He laughed. He understood it was designed to be bought by Vernessa Jenkins at the Cattahoochie Dollar variety store.

HIStory is by far my favourite Greatest Hits, mainly because I see it as an actual part of the HIStory story arc itself. It's a complete contrast to disc 2. Disc 1 is the journey from Off the Wall to Dangerous, including only the hits, with little to none of the aggressive, counter attack songs (Im not saying these should not be on a GH, but their absence makes total sense.
