Here we look at Prince and Symbol/TAFKAP albums issued between 1989 and 2000.
We all love the classic albums of the 80s, but now we need to dig into the wilderness years. The era starts off with his biggest album since 1984' Purple Rain, the Batman soundtrack. Then we have 1990s quirkfest Graffiti Bridge, sad movie but some eye opening grooves there.
Then we have the trend chasing rap lite sound of Diamonds and Pearls and Lovesymbol.
After that Prince changes his name to an unpronounceable symbol and watches his career slip down the toilet, yet still producing Come and the Superior Gold Experience. Chaos and Disorder is his mixed quality kiss off to Warners.
He is also releasing albums under other names like NPG (New Power Generation0, although band members feature prominently in Goldnigga and Exodus, they are pretty much Prince solo productions and Newpowersould definitely is.
Back in his own world we have the 3CD opus of Emancipation, followed by 3CDs of old classics and some average 90s remixes on Crystal Ball. Also add in the Acoustic Truth album and the Kamasutra ballet experiment for the 5cd Crystal Ball experience.
Finally in 1999 we get two more shots, a WB compilation called Old friends4 sale, the vault and Prince produced Rave un2the Joy fantastic, in 2000 Prince returns from Symbol and gives us Ravein2 the Joy fantastic remixes with the superior Beautiful Strange.
I HAVE not included the following - Hits/ Bsides - the new tracks, The Beautiful Experience EP, 1-800 New funk, The War, the Undertaker as they are all EPs, limited release or only some Prince content, even if 1-800 is Prince penned, it is other artists too. The other releases did not see a wide release and thus really don't count as full studio releases. I also understand the poor availability of anything issued after 1993's the Hits/B sides
Same for protege albums like TC Ellis, Eric Leeds, Ingrid Chavez and Martika, they may have Prince penned cuts, but really are that performers stuff and style. I have included the Time album, Pandemonium as its all Prince penned and Mayte's 1995 Children of the Sun albums along with Carmen Electra's
Performers - Batman, Come and GB credited to Prince (GB has additional tracks by the Time, Tevin Campbell, George Clinton and Mavis Staples)
D and P and Lovesymbol credited to Prince and the New Power Generation
TGE - Credited to TAFKAP/Symbol and the NPG
Chaos and Disorder and The Vault - Credited to Prince
Exodus, Gold Nigga - NPS credited to the New Power Generation
The Truth, Emancipation, Crystal ball, Rave un2 - Credited to Symbol/Tafkap (I don't have the Symbol key)
Rave in 2 - Credited to Prince.
Time 2 make ur choices.
