Since we all know about the Jacksons and Jackson 5, does anyone else know about and like other family groups. What do they think of them. the Unsung thread mentioned 2 that were a true threat to the Jacksons - Sylvers and Debarge, both of which had a real group of hits.
The Jackson 5 were not the first big family group and probably not even the first Big Black one (The 5 stairsteps, the Mills brothers).
By family group I mean mainly siblings (And possibly a cousin or a pal or two) from the same family and in this case mostly youngsters (At least 2 members under 16 when they became famous). Unlike some people I wish to include groups who are other than African American or even just from America. Also there must be at least 3 or 4 members, no duos or singles.
The ones I can think of, did you guys know of or like any of them?
Jackson 5/Jacksons - USA 1960s - 1980s Sylvers - USA 1970s Partridge Family - USA 1969 - 1975 DeBarge USA 1978 - 1988 The 5 stairsteps USA 1970s The Osmonds USA late 60s to 1980s Di Franco family USA 1970s - A heartbeat is a lovebeat? The Robinson Family Plan USA 1972 - You poured sugar on me?
The Jets - Tonga 1980s Five (5) Star - UK 1980s Musical Youth - UK 1982 - 85 The Wihongis - NZ 1970s
Most of them were decent, The Osmonds were by far the most blatant rip off of the Jackson 5, The Partridges were more cheesy and sort of kid hippy type thing. The Sylvers were better, as their earlier stuff was less bubblegum and not so focused on the matching flared polyester track suits so many of them liked.
Anyone into family bubblegum groups or family ripoffs of the Jackson 5 too?

The Osmonds became a rip-off of the J5 after the J5 appeared on the scene and became successful. Before that they did totally different music (barber shop), but they actually existed before the J5.
Then when the J5 became successful they started to mimick their kind of music for a while (One Bad Apple etc.).
But later they again went about their own type of music. The J5 was more funk and soul, while the Osmonds tried more rock stuff.

Agree totally - The Osmonds were doing their own thing in the 1960s and then when the J5 blew up in the 70s and some execs saw they were Black and selling millions of records to white kids, they knew a white group doing the same sound as the J5 would sell just as many and it worked. they never became the next J5, but One Bad Apple was a big #1 hit and they had several more hit singles through to the mid 70s. Plus Donny and little Jimmy got turns with the MJ like solo spot.
Little Jimmy Osmond had a massive hit with "Long Haired lover from Liverpool" which was a #1 smash hit in the UK and USA. Even Marie had a smash with Wild Horses and did something that no Jackson girl did at least till the 80s. Part of the reason, Joe put Latoya, Rebbie and Janet in the 1974 floor shows in Las Vegas and then the Jackson girls group later in the 70s, was to go after that Marie Osmond money.
Apparently Donny and Michael respected each other and went off to play with toys the first time they met.
