Also, on the prequels...
Jesus, I remember how excited I was in 1999 when they were coming out and that fabulous poster got released with little Anakin and the shadow of Darth.
I & II are without hyperbole two of the worst films of all time & Christensen is just a terrible actor.
Like Smoothgangsta said at least 3 has the merits of seeing Anakin turn into Vader, which although could have been done 100 times better was nice to see.

Historic, your post was thoroughly enjoyable and very well written! I agree with lots of what you say in the way youve put it, mainly for TFA.
I do think you lose me with TLJ. Nothing can right all the wrongs I see with that movie. TFA seems to set up for a nice sequel. Great ending, we understand why Rey is drawn to everything, Kylo Ren seemed like a decent antagonist. But no, I think that TLJ just seems like it wanted to be it's own standalone film as well as a sequel. I've seen it 3 or 4 times now and while it;s still something I can throw on and enjoy because of the music and certain parts, I dislike it so so much.
I think the reason I like the prequels so much, is because I'm in the massive minority of folk who started watching Star Wars at 32. I didnt have to wait over a decade for a sequel. I was able to watch every film over a period of 10 days! So I have a very different perspective. I really enjoy the World War 2 elements of the set up to the Clone War in the sequels. The Trade stand offs, the political manufacturing, the Jedi council. I just really enjoyed that. Anakins acting, I also grew to like, as it fit his character for me.
I actually only watched the original trilogy "despecialized editions" last week, presented as they were originally. Really liked em. Han shot first! Also, the music scene in ROTJ is way better than the awful updated one.
And that added scene with Jabba in ANH.... I really think I would have much preferred the big reveal in ROTJ... Awful awful addition.
Oh, and Finn is just an updated Jar Jar Binks to me. COME AT ME

Historic, your post was thoroughly enjoyable and very well written! I agree with lots of what you say in the way youve put it, mainly for TFA. I do think you lose me with TLJ... Thanks dude! And that's cool, different strokes for different folks. I found The Last Jedi quite conflicting at first and had to think on it for a while and see it again before coming to realise that I enjoyed it. It's definitely changed a lot and somethings I'm still not entirely sure about yet, but the story's not over so I'm going to see how Episode 9 handles some of the material Episode 8 introduced. Also I'm curious to hear what you have to say about Finn being Jar Jar, I've never heard someone compare the two before!
I too also enjoy the prequels, I grew up with them after all. There's a lot to dislike about them, but I think there's a good amount to appreciate in them too - especially on the technical side of things. As ripped on as Jar Jar was, he was incredibly innovative for his time (and I believe Peter Jackson and his team actually had many discussions with ILM as to how to best handle Gollum in Lord of the Rings). I actually find a lot of the general story of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader incredibly fascinating and it's one that has a lot of potential, the only issue is that the execution sucked terribly - it doesn't help George Lucas had so little directing experience in the decades prior and likely was surrounded by people too afraid to speak up to him. I think he had good intentions though (despite what some people think??).
Say what you want about the dialogue (it definitely isn't stellar), but the lines are fascinatingly enough very memorable and they've made for some fucking hilarious memes. I actually found the dialogue in Episode 3 to be quite an improvement actually, combined with the acting, there's more quips between Anakin and Obi-Wan that remind me of the original trilogy. Episode 1 is alright, Episode 2 is definitely the worse and I actually consider Episode 3 to be a pretty good film.
I think the politics is absolutely fascinating as well and it's added another layer as I've grown older and become more interested in politics myself. I just love the sequence where Palpatine is literally ripping apart the senate chamber to throw those pods at Yoda, a great visual metaphor for how he has essentially destroyed the political system, democracy, and replaced it with a new system that gives him total power. I would've actually liked to have seen a little bit more politics in The Force Awakens, but I can TOTALLY understand why Disney stayed away from it. In fact I can actually understand why Disney played TFA to be pretty safe, they had to prove to the audience that they were capable of making a great Star Wars film in the first place - especially after the reputation was tarnished by the prequels. I think people are a bit too harsh in comparing it to A New Hope, ultimately it is just the standard 'heroes journey' that we see as a standard story template in many films and for me personally, there's enough differences between 4 and 7 that it doesn't bother me. Even then, if you consider the ring theory of the Star Wars films, it actually makes sense to have certain plot points reflect that of Episodes 1 and 4 (for example, the 'mentor' dying near the end in an effort to help save the other protagonists). This whole ring theory actually plays a massive part into a key theme of Star Wars about history repeating itself, but I'm digress.
When it comes to the special editions, 95% of changes I don't care for. I grew up with the special edition DVDs and I genuinely think people blow most changes out of proportion. There are some I'd absolutely revert (Han Shot First, those stupid fucking rocks in front of R2 as he hides on Tatooine), but for the most part I'm pretty indifferent with them being there.

Again, very enjoyable post HIStoric! I could enjoy talking for hours about Star Wars with you. I think you'd school me in every way, even though I have only really come into my own with regards to how I feel about characters, stories, plots etc. I definitely agree 95% of the additions are not that bad. Especially since I saw the new versions first. But, I do dislike CGI at the best of times and I did notice a lot of modern CGI in ANH when I first saw it. Currently watching TPM. The start of my Prequel trilogy. I'm coming hot off the heels of the OT and the last 2. Oh, just to clarify what I meant about Finn being the new Jar Jar. Jar Jar, I guess, was written par the comedy style at the time. Jim CArrey-esque. Over the top, gag induced. Finn, is the comedic part of TFA, written for the current audience. WAY more subtle, but he's clearly got the most comic relief. This is mostly retconned in TLJ... However, I didnt rea;;y mind about this, I still haven't taken to Finn's character.... Especially after the whole new storyline with Rose.
