If you sense some political disdain in Neil’s lyrics you wouldn’t be wrong. Neil and Chris are northerner’s, so Thatcherism…..well you know the rest.

Yes, I’m the PSB nut! Nigel and I really are two different people! Neil Tennant of PSB’s and Neil Hannon of The Devine Comedy act as the voices in Robbie’s head as he wrestles with his demons. It’s one of the best pop songs to come out of the 90’s in my honest opinion. I thought it was you - I just didn't wanna embarrass myself. I remember renting out Nightlife from the library back in the day when people used to do things like that. I recall quite liking it and the insanely long song titles. I went on holiday with Neil Hannon a few years ago. True story.

@mattyjam and SmoothGangsta , have you guys listened to the new Stones album? I think Guns N Roses fans would really enjoy. Very catchy old skool rock.

I listened to it when it came out yeah, I haven't really gotten into the stones but I enjoyed it. Like you said it's pretty good rock record and better than I would expect from a band as old as they are. Sweet sounds of heaven is awesome lol.

I listened to it a few times and I gotta say, I don't see what the fuss is all about. Maybe it's a grower, but only one song really stood out to me (Live By The Sword, which reminded me a lot of GNR). The rest kinda fell flat for me. And I say that as someone who's enjoyed a good chunk of their post-70s output. I'll give it a few more listens, as I say, maybe it's a grower.

I think it's a solid record and I've enjoyed it, but it hasn't been on heavy rotation for me. There are a lot of elements I like: the riff in the verses of Get Close is fantastic for example, completely in the vein of tracks Slave and Can't You Hear Me Knocking; and the playing throughout the album is really good. The downsides for me are that both the production choices and the songwriting are more polished than I like from the Stones. And ultimately, I think the songwriting on this record is just not that special (I was almost gonna say 'a bit generic', Matty.. ). I love how the band sounds on Live By The Sword - it's the one song with the classic lineup and that has the classic Stones sound that I love so much - but the song itself is just alright. All that said, I do think the fact that this record is out and is solid is a triumph in and of itself, and it's great to hear the stories of Keith calling Mick to tell him he's gonna dive into the studio after dinner - they seem genuinely motivated. Apparently the next record is mostly done already, so I look forward to that and hope that the rumours of a Euro tour this fall are accurate.

Well, I fucking LOVE Hackney Diamonds! It was my most played album of last year and that’s saying something given how late in the year it was released! I wasn’t particularly a Stones fan. Don’t get me wrong, I liked a few of their songs, also enjoyed seeing a few live performances and concerts on VHS/DVD over the years but this album has knocked me for six! It’s catchy as fuck! It’s riffy man! Mick sounds incredible! The backing vocals sound warm. SoCav mentioned Get Close!! What a tune! Depending On You, Live By The Sword could almost be The B-52’s! Mess It Up is almost disco! Whole Wide World just a an all round fun rocker along with Bite My Head Off. Sweet Sounds Of Heaven is brilliant. I love the way Mick casually throws out the lyrics.
@mattyjam, have you listened on headphones? For me this album was an instant love. I had no expectations. But let it grow.
The whole overly polished thing is irrelevant to me. In fact I love the production on it because it’s almost pop.

Well, I fucking knew if I wrote that last post I would give it another listen, like it a tonne more and regret writing it. Played it again tonight and enjoyed it a lot more. Still think Live By The Sword is the best one, but yeah, Whole Wide World is really melodic and has a great chorus and I love Macca's fuzz-bass on Bite My Head Off. I still wouldn't say it was anywhere near as good as Voodoo Lounge, which is by far my favourite post-70s Stones record. But I can tell already it will have a good replayability count.

I’m glad you gave it a fair go because it’s just such a fun vibe. For The Stones to release this at this point in their career is quite something. It’s great with headphones or earbuds aswell. I’m delighted you’re enjoying this one.

Mick’s voice man. I love the way he casually sort of almost throws away the lyrics at certain points. Love Paul’s fuzzy bass on Bite My Head Off also.

It's a funny one, it was actually Mick's voice that turned me off at first. I usually think he's a great singer, but there were a few moments on my first listen where I felt he sounded a little hokey. I mean, the guy is 80yrs old for Christ sake and for the most part, he manages to sound pretty decent. But when I played it out loud last night for Fiona (her first listen), her first remarks were "he can't really sing anymore, can he?". So it's not just me...

I think his voice has held up well actually, he doesn't really sound different to 30 years ago imo. He stopped the growling he used to do in the 80s, probably to preserve his voice. That's when the big shift happened. I think it sounds fine now - at times a bit nasal, but overall much younger than his age, pretty vibrant, and definitely better than most of his peers (the exceptions that come to mind are Tom Jones and Van Morrison, who both still sound absolutely fantastic).

Honestly, the brass neck! But Axl Rose and Madonna are Luciano Pavarotti right? Both of you can fuck right off! Mick is an 80 year old! He’s an Octogenarian for christ sakes! I mean far be it from me to engage in tit for tat -oh but you do Aaron- but come the fuck on! Both of you should be ashamed of yourselves! It’s like going to an old folks home and criticising 100 year old Agatha for not walking right because she uses a walking frame! SoCav, please escort Bonnie & fucking Clyde from the building! Poor Agatha is in floods!
