Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. Oh My God. Can’t quite get over it. Whatever it is you think you’re going to see, it’s not that. That. Fucking. Ending!!! Spoiler alert!! So as I'd avoided all spoilers and the only thing I knew about the film was that it was set around the time of Sharon Tate's murder. I thought that was the centrepiece of the film, so when after half an hour they'd barely been mentioned and it was all about DiCaprio & Pitt, I found it quiet jarring, I couldn't see where it was going and didn't think I was enjoying it. Then I realised it was more a series of short vignettes about the actor's careers & relationships and i settled into it & got it. Started to love it then. Everyone's performance is outstanding. DiCaprio especially. But the little cameos, Pacino, Madsen, Russell....brilliant. Dicaprio's scenes with that girl actor and Margot Robbie's scene in the cinema...beautiful. I wasn't expecting that ending that re-wrote history, a bit like the end of Basterds. And just when you're thinking this is quite violence free for a Tarantino film, well, it makes up for it in ten minutes. I definitely need to see it again.

And just when you're thinking this is quite violence free for a Tarantino film, well, it makes up for it in ten minutes. I definitely need to see it again. Yup SPOILER ALERT here too folks!
Yeah, a while in I realised Tarantino was giving more of a 'day in the life' rather than focusing on the story side of things, like he usually does. Once I embraced that I enjoyed it more! It definitely is quite violent free for a Tarantino film isn't it? With all this it's good to see Tarantino still trying new things.
All I knew, too, was that it revolved around Charles Manson and the murders of Sharon Tate etc. It was a fantastic twist/rewriting that I did not expect when they ended up in Rick's house and fought Cliff, leaving Sharon alone! As with any violent Tarantino scene, it was executed beautifully. When one of the girls spooks a drunk Rick Dalton, he scrambles into the shed and fucking confidently ROCKS ON UP WITH A BLOODY FLAMETHROWER. OH MY GODDDDD. What a scene! What scene!!
I really liked his scenes with the little girl too. The first one where they speak when they're reading, but also when they were shooting that scene where he holds her hostage. His improv leads the director to praise him immensely, but when the little girl tells him the acting she just saw was the best she ever saw? That was the validation he had longed for, and so he starts to tear up and ugh. Some really fine acting on both Leo and Julia Butters' behalf.
I really love all the cinematic references in it, the different aspect ratios/film quality when we're watching old TV serials/films, and also the whole 60s California aesthetic to it all. I definitely went home and played some of the songs I heard there (Deep Purple's Hush particularly!).
I can see why those in go in expecting a story-driven, typical Tarantino piece might be thrown off... but if you embrace the character driven, 'day in the life' nature of it all, I think you'll really enjoy it. Which I did, and I look forward to rewatching it - I definitely think it's a film you want to rewatch to get more out of it.

It's probably more of a Jackie Brown that a Django. As in I found Django & Basterds instantly rewarding. I knew 20 minutes in that these were brilliant films. With Hollywood, it was more 'that was a brilliant piece of cinema' and 'what the fuck was that'. So I need to see it again to understand if it was a one off or like other Tarantino films it will get better on repeated viewing. Definitely an essential watch though. Still thinking about it 4 days later.

The Vue here is £5.99 all the time now, any showing, any time. It's ace. Like early 90s again! Which as we all know was the best time ever!

Watched Django. It was OK, but I was so frustrated by the dumbness of Dr. Schultz. All he had to do was play it to the end, shake Candy's hand and go. Instead he fucked up at the finish line unnecessarily. I understand something had to happen for drama, but it somehow didn't fit into the otherwise coolness of the character. I didn't like that.

Watch it again and then come back with the correct answer! Seriously I get what you mean though, but he couldn't allow someone so heinous to go unpunished.

I get it they had to add drama to the end but to me that didn't fit. They should have found another way to add drama and get Candy (and Schultz) killed, if that was the goal. To me Schultz losing his head like that didn't fit the character. He was supposed to be the cool-headed one, always thinking of the bigger picture.

Also, after years of just doing the selfish thing (bringing in men for whomever paid him the most irrespective of reason), yet morally being fully against slavery and having grown to really like Django (almost treating him like a son or apprentice at least), he felt the time was right to make a stand and right the wrongs Django and his wife had suffered. Also I think the scene where they witness the slave mauled to death by the dogs is integral to Waltz changing personality like that. It affected him and this was his way of getting justice done that guy and apologising for being a bystander as he was ripped apart.
