Brad talking about the Jam vocals. To think that Charles Thompson tried to use this as an example of MJ's voice declining in the studio. He also said seeing the video of MJ recording Childhood ruined it for him because he was "coughing at the end of every line." In reality he clears his throat a few times which is pretty common for singers, but we won't let that get in the way of a good exaggeration.

I wasn't even aware of the vocal comping concept, very interesting. Many of MJ songs sound they were done in one take but probably a lot f them were comped. I embedded part 2 of the Jam vocals in my last comment. To respond to WildStyle's comment about Charles Thomson, that means he's not knowledgeable (as many of us who aren't musicians or musical engineers ourselves) about musical technicalities such as vocal comping since Brad noted it's a common practice in the studios. Probably the only difference nowadays is that it's done with computers and not manually like Bruce seemed to be doing.

It also just speaks to Michael's level of perfectionism (maybe too much perfectionism). I bet if you listened to all 40 something takes of Jam there would be no duds. It's not like he HAD to do that many takes in order to get one useable performance. He just wanted the most perfect vocal possible.

I'm the same with composing a strongly worded email so I totally identify with him here.

If Michael wore red shirts as often as he did, I don't think the pomegranate juice was that noticeable on him. Brad clarified in the comments that MJ would sit in a producer's desk to eat the pomegranate.

''I still remember my first visit to Neverland. I mean, it would be hard to forget. But that was before Neverland was really Neverland —it was just Michael's new ranch.
He asked me to install a music system in his room—specifically on each side of his bed. It was right after he bought the Sycamore Valley Ranch.
So I drove to the ranch (he wasn't there on my first visit) and was escorted to his room. I quickly took some measurements and had some ideas ... but maybe it took me a little longer than necessary. I mean... It's Michael Jackson's room for God's sake! That's really cool, no matter how you do it.
It was kind of decorated with memorabilia from movies, toys, a golden and red throne (a gift, I presume?), shopping bags and letters everywhere. That's how his room was, an office so it was clear that that was his house.
I ordered a pair of BBSM-4 speakers from Westlake Studios for your room and a good amplifier. We not only recorded at Westlake but they also manufactured a line of speakers that we (and many professionals) used to record. They built huge speakers that cost more than a house and also sold smaller versions that had an amazing sound in a more traditional size. Michael was used to the sound of Westlake's boxes, so it only made sense to put together a small pair of them in his room so he could hear the mixes bruce was working on.
I decided to put them in arms that would rest above their bedside tables, and he could pick them up, so that they would be close to his ears, like a giant set of headphones. I found a cool idea and immersed myself in the project the following week. It only took a few hours to install them, so I took off my shoes and climbed on to their bed, pulling the speakers on each side of my head for a test drive. They seemed amazing, and I was very proud of myself for making the whole thing work so well. Then Michael came in and heard them, and he got so excited! We played some studio mixes and talked about new ideas for the ranch —and the rest of the huge ranch.
In the following years, I spent a lot of time at the ranch, at home, even in the bedroom. Soon he wanted even bigger speakers in his bathroom. I knew he loved to feel the music, and when I did it right, he always laughed and yelled, "Hurt me, Brad... Hurt me!"
Years passed, more projects, more albums, more mixes, more laughs. Then one day, it was like the music was going to stop. Michael is gone, and Neverland would forever be empty without him.
I remember watching news of strangers and the press visiting the ranch. It seemed so empty. I remember a reporter coming into the room and trying to describe something he had clearly never seen. Then I saw the holes in the wall, where I had mounted my brackets for the speakers.
I didn't really notice anything else, just the speakers that weren't there anymore. I knew he loved it and I imagined him bulking up and eating popcorn.
The missing speakers represented, at least for me, a great loss.''

Especially on music related issues? He's basically a journo hack posing as an MJ expert. I always thought it was common knowledge amongst the fans Michael's songs did have comping in them. Smile has a small amount of comping because Michael wasn't fully happy with it. YANA, on the other hand, is comped line by line IIRC. Neither case is down to declining ability to sing although Michael's vocal chords couldn't handle as much stress in one session as before. Earth Song's final call and response part was left to last in the HIStory sessions for this reason. And it still hadn't fully recovered by the start of the tour.

Jesus Christ. The 4 times I saw MJ himself didn't add up to the cost of one these tickets.
