"He influenced me in many ways, not just in music, also as a humanitarian, philanthropist, artist, as an individual who transcended culture. I would not be who I am today without Michael Jackson." - Usher

Bappi Lahiri had once met Michael Jackson, who was left amazed with the Indian singer’s gold Ganesha chain. During Michael’s visit to India in 1996, he met Bappi and said that he was a fan of his song Jimmy Jimmy from Disco Dancer. Bappi recalled the meeting: “ ‘Oh my God, fantastic! What’s your name?’ Maine kaha Bappi Lahiri (When he came to Mumbai, I was sitting somewhere. He came up to me and noticed my gold chain with a Lord Ganesha pendant. He said, ‘Oh my God, fantastic! What’s your name?’ I introduced myself),” he had said. “‘You’re a composer?’ I said, ‘Yes, I have done Disco Dancer.’ Jaise hi Disco Dancer bola, woh bole (As soon as I said Disco Dancer, he said), ‘I like your song Jimmy Jimmy’,” he had added.

''I really regret the people who only know Michael Jackson of the last few years. It is a pity that they see only the outward appearance of someone who, in fact, was dealing with demons created in childhood, which we cannot understand or imagine. I feel for the people who only know 'Wacko Jacko'', because they miss witnessing an exhibition of talent that, most likely, the world will never see again.''

The year was 1992 and Michael Jackson the most famous person on the planet. British comedian Benny Hill, however, was buried in London's Royal Brompton Hospital after a heart attack eleven days earlier, his TV show had been cancelled and two months he passed away. And in this unusual and singular situation, Michael Jackson was a fan. This unlikely encounter took place exactly thirty years ago and was the subject of a podcast called 'When Michael Met Benny'. Written by Jonathan Morris, he explores what may have happened in that room. "The idea of all this came when I saw fans on the internet saying 'did you know that Michael Jackson was a big benny hill fan and that they met, and Jackson visited Benny Hill in the hospital a few weeks before he died?'. That seemed like an incredibly unlikely situation," Morris told Euronews Culture. "They were two very, very different people and still had a connection. Michael Jackson wasn't just a Benny Hill fan, he loved him. Benny was his favorite comedian. He collected all the videotapes, he was obsessed with him. So I just thought, there's a story there." Benny and Jackson "When the meeting happened, there were some other people in the room with them," Morris notes. "One of them was the TV producer, Dennis Kirkland, who wrote benny hill's biography. And he mentioned Benny Hill making a joke about offering Michael a Coke and Jackson refusing because he had a deal with Pepsi at the time.'' "There was also a genuine discussion about Jackson participating in benny hill's new show and Benny appearing in a Michael Jackson video. Jackson made a dance move and then Benny copied it. That's the kind of thing that, according to the producer, they really talked about."

Kathy Sledge, the legendary singer-songwriter, rose to fame in the 1970s alongside her sisters, sister sledge (famous for classics such as We Are Family, Lost in Music and He's the Greatest Dancer) worked with tons of music titans during their successful years, including Diana Ross, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards and James Brown. There was a time when Kathy and her singing sisters toured with the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson. Kathy spoke exclusively to the Daily Star and during the chat, the soul singer discussed what it was like to go on tour with Michael, how he was in person and the only question she ever wished she had asked him. "I worked with Michael and it was huge. He had the greatest heart in the world." Kathy said she had an affinity with Michael because, like him, she was the younger sister who sang in a famous family band. Michael, of course, rose to fame with his older brothers with The Jackson 5 and Kathy with his older sisters in Sister Sledge. Kathy admitted that she wanted to contact Michael and ask if her older brothers were giving her work for being the younger brother and also the band's lead singer: "I wanted to get in touch with him, because you know, being the youngest and singing all the songs... I wanted to say, if they treated him the way my sisters treated me" But this conversation, unfortunately they never had

Rockwell's debut single , "Somebody's Watching Me" was a hit of the 1980s and to this day climbs the top of the most performed songs at the time of Halloween. During a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone, Rockwell explained how he wrote the song: "I asked God to give it to me," he said. "The prayer was, 'God grant me the creativity to write a song that goes to the top of the stops.' Everything came to me so easily after this prayer." Rockwell thanked the divine after writing "Somebody's Watching Me." "I said to God, 'I'm going to tell you all about yourself,'" he recalled. "I'm going to tell them how you did it for me and how it really happened." And what did Michael Jackson think of Somebody's Watching Me after Rockwell sang to him several times? Rockwell revealed that he had known the King of Pop since he was a child. One day, he went to Jackson's house and played Somebody's Watching Me. "I singed to him about eight or nine times. Michael said, 'Hey Rebbie! Hey Janet! You have to listen to this song that [Rockwell] made.' Every time we stopped the music, Michael called three more people." MJ was thrilled with the music. "Then Michael pulled me aside and said, '[Rockwell], I need to talk to you for a second. Who are you going to get to sing the background vocals?'" . "And I said, 'Why don't you do it?' And it worked just like that." "Somebody's Watching Me" was a big hit in the United States. It peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, remaining on the chart for 20 weeks. In the UK, according to The Official Charts Company the song peaked at number 6 remaining on the chart for 11 weeks. "Somebody's Watching Me" is an '80s classic and wouldn't be the same without the king of pop vocals.

Donny Osmond knows the price of fame in childhood very well.
At age 14, he became a global phenomenon with "Puppy Love", leaving legions of teenagers in love. Little did he know that 50 years later, he'd still be singing at a Las Vegas resident show.
But there was a moment when so much fame brought trouble. Fortunately, he had a friend going through the same thing—Michael Jackson. In an interview with Page Six of the New York Post, Osmond spoke about his long friendship with Jackson.
"I remember seeing Michael peeking from the side of the curtain watching me during the show," Osmond recalled. "It was an amazing moment, like, 'There's my friend looking at me on stage. It's really hard to talk about... two teenagers who sold incredible amounts of records and... all they wanted was to be just children."
The two kept in touch and met whenever the schedules allowed. Osmond recalled going to see the movie The Enchanted Crystal with Jackson —who insisted that they wear coats, wigs, and sunglasses as a disguise. "We were just trying to be normal," Osmond said.
Osmond's career reached a lull in the 1980s, while Jackson's skyrocketed with the release of Thriller. Osmond was one of the first to hear. Osmond asked Jackson for advice on how to boost his career.
"I couldn't get a recording contract," he recalled.
Jackson went straight.
'Well, you have to change your name.'"
Osmond didn't like to hear that. But a few years later, he realized how solid the board was.
"The curious thing is that he told me this in '83, and "Soldier of Love" (Osmond's hit in 1989) became an unnamed success. So Michael was right." Radio DJs refused to play anything from Osmond, but the music was good. So they played and didn't say who the singer was—until it was a hit.
"The best thing that happened to me was losing my career," Osmond reflected, assessing the fact that failure made him more grateful. "And it's so weird for me to say that because the '80s were the worst decade of my life because I didn't have a career."
The last time Donny Osmond spoke to Michael Jackson was about a year before his death in 2009.
"I said:
'Mike, where are you?'
He said, 'I can't tell you.'
'Mike, you're talking to me. Where are you?"
"Please don't tell anyone, but I'm in Phoenix. I rented a tour bus and picked up my kids and we're going to Phoenix and I'm hiding now.'
Osmond reached out.
"I said, 'It's a nine-hour drive to my home in Utah. I want your kids to nade with my kids. You're going to have a wonderful conversation with my wife and me. And I'm going to bring a little bit of normality into your life.'
"And he said, 'I really need this now,' but we're never meeting again."

"He always had an idea of what he wanted every instrument to sound like. ...He would sing every part. He didn't play it, but he can sing it. And if you didn't play it like he sang it, he would sing it 'til you played it, like he sang it. God d*mn it." - Siedah Garrett
