Which single which reached number 2 do you think most deserved to reach number one?

I don't know the sales figures, but I do know YRMW lost out by under 100 copies to Kylie's Can't Get You Out Of My Head in the UK. If Sony had released a CD1 and CD2 package like they did with all the HIStory singles and like Kylie had done, YRMW would've eadily taken the number one spot.
They didn't even put remixes on the single. I know some folks are sceptical about the whole Sony sabotage fan theory, but this was just strange practise back then and then not releasing YRMW on a physical format in the US when it was already top 10 on airplay alone was a surefire way to stop it achieving its full potential. Even Billboard commented online how strange that decision was back in 2001.
I don't care if it sounds like I should wear a tinfoil hat, I 100% believe Sony fucked up the Invincible single releases deliberately.

CGYOOMH is a great track and a great video, so I wouldn't say YRMW was robbed. It'd be interesting to know what the other songs were that held the other singles off the topspot.

Have to say, as much as I hate the fact that MJ never got a number one from his last album, you can't deny that CGYOOMH fully deserves it's top spot. A cracking pop tune.

GITM is the best of those tunes, I ember being thrilled when it debuted at number 2. I really wasn't expecting that.
But HTW would have been a beautiful Xmas number one, at least it was only beaten by such a classic (Whitney's IWALY).
Man in the Mirror would have been the best though. Both because he deserved a number one tribute after he passed, but also because I love the fact that for such a classic song it has such a low chart placing originally yet was the one hit that resonated after his death.

Kylie's single was declining in sales as YRMW was released and hers got a very unexpected boost from Thursday to Saturday that week absolutely no one saw coming. And: It's just one of those unexpected things nobody can really plan for. YRMW was very much on course to take top spot until Kyle edged ahead on the last day. CGYOOMH became Kylie's first million selling single in the UK. It was just her time and Sony's strategy for YRMW was actually fine. This isn't what deliberate sabotage looks like.

It'd be interesting to know what the other songs were that held the other singles off the topspot. Here you go: LMA was beaten by Belfast Child by Simple Minds. HTW was beaten by Whitney Houston with I Will Always Love You. GITM was beaten by 2 Unlimited's No Limit. Say, Say, Say was beaten by Billy Joel's Uptown Girl. MITM (2009) was beaten byย Cascada's "Evacuate the Dancefloor".

I still think of all those songs, GITM is the most surprising chart placing. All the others were boosted someway.
LMA - boosted as wasn't on the vinyl & cassette versions of Bad (at that time the most popular formats), so fans had to buy it to have it.
HTW - boosted by being a beautiful Xmas single
MITM - boosted by his death
Say, Say, Say - boosted as not available on an MJ album so fans bought it in droves.
Mind you GITM was featured on Oprah so I guess that was it's boost, but even so...

I still think it was odd that they didn't include a single remix on the CD single. This was back when physical single formats were still relevant and commissioning remixes for the clubs was standard practise for an artist of MJs magnitude. Plus the non-release Stateside was very odd. They clearly weren't pulling out all the stops with YRMW to help it succeed the way they had done previously with the HIStory era singles.

Personally, I was glad there weren't any remixes on it! More than had fill of those throughout the Dangerous to BOTDF eras, really. YRMW sold what CGYOOMH did in LESS time. It was a successful first track. As for the United States, Michael and Sony had long since given up there. And were not expecting anything like a big reaction, so I feel, on balance, YRMW was testing the waters there. No such doubts anywhere else ever since the post-YANA period.

How Sony did YRMW and Butterflies' releases in the US was so weird. They had YRMW on radio (That was honestly the only way to hear it until Invincible came out) and the video premiere was on 3 channels. The single did well but the decision not to do a physical release made no sense Butterflies too. The song was HUGE on Urban/R&B radio and the remix with Eve was well recieved.....but no physical release pg13, remember when that guy came on your forum and told us how Sony spent 60 million dollars promoting Invincible but Michael sabotaged it.....AND said the songs were being played all over radio in May/June 2001, even though the songs weren't even played for Sony's higher ups until mid June? LOL

This would go off really hard in the clubs ๐บ๐บ
