I haven’t been able to connect with American Life either. The tour was great though. If you’re in to that sort of thing. She had been riding a wave of massive commercial and critical success from 98-03 and it had to come undone at some stage. I really don't see why AL has become something of a cult favourite amongst her hard-core fans. It always sounded to me like an album of Music outtakes (which was a much better album imo). How did fans in America take to her getting this political?

How did fans in America take to her getting this political? Not well as you can imagine. I remember there being republican protesters outside the concert I went to. And also I recall a fair few comments on the way out from dissatisfied concert-goers who took exception to the politics. It never bothered me, but I'm a democrat so my politics align. My argument is, if you're a republican, what the hell are you doin at a Madonna concert anyway you big closeted Mary!!

It is a cult favourite cause it’s a strong album that was underrated. Even the non singles are great

Erotica and American Life definitely. I can listen to them all day long. American Life? You people really really must dig DEEP in the weights of Madonna's soul to have that album as one of your favorites. A bit like MattyJam with Invincible, I'm past justifying my love (ho ho) for American Life. Although I wasn't keen on first listen I began to love it very quickly. Despite being an uber fan (according to Spotify, I was in the top 0.05% of Madonna listeners last year!), there are not many albums I can listen to all the way through and love it, but with AL I can. The title track, Nothing Fails, Mother and Father are amongst her best. Love Profusion is a beautiful pop record and I love Die Another Day. Hollywood is great fun and Xstatic Process and Intervention are lovely acoustic numbers. So yeah, I love it.

I've never heard a Madonna album from start to finish. I've liked a few singles over the years, but not enough to check out her albums.

The only reason it got shit on was because she'd been the media-darling for two albums straight and so a backlash was inevitable, not helped of course by the overtly political nature of some of the content. I seem to recall it getting a tonne of positive reviews when it first came out. I like all the songs Tony mentioned, except for Mother And Father. I would also add Easy Ride - which is a lovely number.

If you're not sure, check out the live version from the Reinvention Tour.

Well I guess I’ve got to give American Life another go. To be fair, if I’m being completely honest I didn’t really give it much of a chance. I loved the I’m Going To Tell You A Secret documentary for the most part. The live footage is superb on it.

It's essentially a Greatest Hits show .

It’s refreshing to come across mj fans who also like Madonna. The ones I talked to in the past didn’t appreciate her enough
