I'm not including soundtrack albums, just full-length studio releases.
You can vote for three albums.
It was hard, but I picked:
- Erotica The ultimate Madonna album for me. I love the jazzy vocal stylings which she had picked up from the vocal training for IB/Dick Tracey and can be heard on tracks like Secret Garden, Where Life Begins and Fever. Add to the mix the four best single releases of her career (Bad Girl, Deeper & Deeper, Rain and the title track) and you just have perfection.
- Music Everyone raves about ROL (and I can see why), but this is like it's more fun sibling. Impressive Instant, Don't Tell Me and Music are more danceable than anything on ROL, and the gentle acoustic flavorings of songs like Gone and I Deserve It are just sublime.
- American Life Her most underrated album for sure. A very personal affair. I loved the accompanying tour, especially the way she rocked songs like Mother & Father and Nobody Knows Me onstage alone without any fanfare/backing dancers etc.

It's hard to beat Virgin / True Blue / Prayer - which is one of my favourite run of albums by any artist ever. But you can't have a discussion about Madonna's best albums without mentioning Ray of Light, so as much as it killed me to leave out LAP, I voted for the other three. Her albums after Music took a serious nosedive though.

Hard Candy is so much fun, but LAP has to win for the title track plus other classics such as Express Yourself, Cherish, Keep It Together then Til Death Do Us Part, Dear Jessie, Oh Father. Amazing.

Also, shame I'm Breathless never makes these polls. Appreciate it's a soundtrack album bit it's 100% new and solo material so different from normal Soundtracks like Who's That Girl or Evita.
I'm Breathless is one of my favourites. The songwriting is superb and not sure her voice ever sounded better.

Like A Prayer Hard Candy Rebel Heart
I’m not going to even attempt to try to explain myself but Rebel Heart Super Deluxe Edition is pop perfection and a very special album to me personally as is the wonderfully fun Hard Candy.
True Blue, Like A Virgin, Erotica are 4th, 5th and 6th.

I love all her music for the most part, but there’s something magical about her early 80s sounds and some of the first music I was introduced to. Also I had confessions on heavy rotation the first few years...and sort of wish we had a new mj album I could play alongside it Glad to see you giving American life some love, I really love that album too and felt it deserved to do better. On the flip side, the singles did well in Canada

Ray Of Light, Like A Prayer and Erotica, although depending on my mood the latter could easily be switched for Bedtime Stories.
1989-1998 = Madonna's best decade of music.

Erotica and American Life definitely. I can listen to them all day long. American Life? You people really really must dig DEEP in the weights of Madonna's soul to have that album as one of your favorites.

I was thinking about my “top-3” the other day after I posted here and well if I’m being completely honest Like A Virgin and True Blue would probably be top 3’s for me. Albums aside, Madonna has released consistently great to decent pop tunes from 1983 to 2015. I can’t think of anyone from that 80’s generation who’ve matched her or come close. 🤔

The tour was great though. If you’re in to that sort of thing.

The tour was great though. If you’re in to that sort of thing. She had been riding a wave of massive commercial and critical success from 98-03 and it had to come undone at some stage. I really don't see why AL has become something of a cult favourite amongst her hard-core fans. It always sounded to me like an album of Music outtakes (which was a much better album imo).
