Bugger.
Literally just sold the last of my CDs and I love me some Neil Young. Hope it's just temporary.

Will be interesting to see if anyone with pull will follow, your Weeknds, Swifts or Kanye's (not specifically them, but anyone in the top 100). I know Swift and Prince pulled their music for quite some time for artistic reasons.

I agree with him about Joe Rogan. Joe and his podcast are not things I'm a fan of at all for various reasons, covid misinformation being only one of them, guess if it's what he wants to do and what he feels is right then good on him. Sucks for people who are really into him though definitely.

Eh, Joe has a massive platform and consistently outright lies about things and it's definitely harmful especially when it comes to the covid stuff. The reasons he gave for removing his music are his personal beliefs and I think his concerns are valid and very real.

Nah, I'm with Matty on this one. What a self-important knobhead. Fortunately for me, I'd rather lick the dribble from my grandma's chin than listen to Neil Young.

He was on there for a little while in 2014/2015 before Tidal came out. I remember playing some of his tracks on there, but it was frustrating when he died because his music wasn’t streaming anywhere but Tidal, and almost no one uses Tidal. I honestly reckon that partially contributed to why later generations aren’t as familiar with his work. At the very moment he has the most publicity in decades, at a time when younger generations may not have been familiar with him or what the deal with him was about, when they went to go search him on Spotify or YouTube, he was almost nowhere to be found. Well, one random song off the Happy Feet soundtrack aside hah.

I don't like Joe Rogan and I'm very far from being an antivaxxer, but this was an attempt at blackmail and Spotify called Young's bluff.
I'm really tired of cancel culture. If you don't like Rogan, just don't listen to him. (I don't, for example.) And yes, he's had Robert Malone on his podcast, who is spreading misinformation (and of whom I have a negative opinion myself), but doesn't the mainstream media spread lots of misinformation too and have questionable people as guests all the time? I mean, hello, Leaving Neverland anyone? With that massive global campaign. We as MJ fans, are especially aware of the fact that spreading misinformation isn't just the domain of social media podcasts but the mainstream media is just as guilty of it.
Oprah has had all kind of fake healer crooks on her shows (not to mention giving a platform to false accusers). She promoted dangerous quack science or the Satanic Ritual Abuse Moral Panic (which made innocent people end up in jail in the 1980s), but because that's mainstream media and that's Oprah, no one had a problem with that. So fuck that.
Now, I'm hearing Barry Manilow joined Neil Young's boycott. I'm sure Spotify will be shitting their pants from the prospect of not having Barry Manilow. Lol.

I really don't think it was. Young has been pretty critical of Spotify in the past, namely about the audio quality. He also has his own streaming service (think he uploads all his gigs) so he really didn't have much regards for Spotify to begin with. Also, a few years ago he was about to pull his BST Summertime co-headline spot with Bob Dylan in Hyde Park because of the sponsor Barclays links to fossil fuels. The sponsors were dropped for the day and Young did the performance, but he was adamant he wouldn't play. I think at this point in his life Young that Young is able to stick to his principles is something rare and to be commended, regardless of anyones opinion of Rogan etc.

Neil Young has every right to do what he's done, although I think it is perhaps a tad misguided, as there are plenty of casual fans like myself who will just stop listening to his music as a result of this. But there's definitely a touch of arrogance about trying to use ones status/position in an attempt to silence others. I actually don't know anything about Joe Rogan or his views, but people are entitled to listen to any crackpot theories they like. Censoring people whose opinions you find objectionable is just another form of dictatorship. If we curtail to every far-left attempt at cancel culture we will end up living like North Korea.

Agreed on this point (well, to an extent - Hitler like...) but I think the issue for him is that Rogan has made so much money and been put at the forefront of Spotify's podcasters/everyone that's Young's issue. Again, you're opinion is 100% valid though, everyone is entitled to think what they want of Neil Young thinking what he wants, and so forth. One other point as to why Young feels so strongly about this is because of him having polio as a child and benefitting from the polio vaccine. Another point may be that he watched/listened to 3 minutes of any of Rogans shows and realsed he's an actual moron. As someone who has all the CD's of his that I love, I stand strongly with Neil in his fight against online streaming and streamers and their laughable lack of physical media (I'm reading between the lines).

I literally just sold my Neil Young CDs, alongside the rest of my CD collection. I was very anti-streaming for the longest time, but it is what it is and there comes a point where you have to just admit defeat. Personally, I preferred iPods being the go-to music listening device. You could upload any physical media you liked, you had control, not the artist and not Apple. I held on to my iPod for the longest time but then they stopped making them and you could only buy refurbished models which don't have the same lifespan, so I caved in about six months ago and joined Spotify. It doesn't feel like progress to me, as I'm constantly coming across albums/songs I love that I can't listen to anymore. I guess we're all paying the price now for the fact that a whole generation has grown up thinking that they don't need to pay for music.
