Ah thanks mate. I was going to get my KOP CD, pop it in the CD player to get the track length but you simply pressed a few buttons and here we are!🤣 Modern technology! Amazing! 😎👍🏼 Yeah man, Discogs is a great website to see all the different variants of an album!

I don't get how anyone can be enthusiastic about a 7" version? It's like "yay, LESS music." Because it's a different mix with a different bridge! Lots of Bowie's single mixes are different, it ain't just about the length of a song. The 7" of Breaking Glass is actually longer than the album version. There's a 7" mix of The Girl Is Mine without the dialogue, since everyone here voted the song out into oblivion I'm sure people would prefer that one! Oh the 7" mix of the Jacksons Wait is better too! Different mix. The Girl Is Mine 7' single version is an improvement on the album version imo

Funny thing is, is that I’m on it but haven’t been on there in a long time and always forget to use it as a reference. It’s great for looking up albums for sure.

I think they have their time and place. For a song like Human Nature that isn't long, at 4 minutes, then yeah for sure. I don't really get the point.
But when you have longer songs, depending on the context sometimes you just want a version that's more straight to the point. Case-in-point, I had a party recently and made a huge playlist of it. Naturally, there were a good handful of MJ tracks in there, amongst them were DYSTGE, Thriller and YRMW. For those three songs, I elected to use the radio edits off Number Ones. My reason being I felt they either went on for a little bit too long (DYSTGE at 6 minutes), or the album versions take their sweet time at the beginning to get to the actual song (Thriller/YRMW). Those last two songs, I use the radio edits on my dance playlist too, as when I'm dancing about, I'm not really interested in the atmospheric build-up of Thriller, or the tired spoken intro for YRMW. I just wanna groove!
So yeah, they have their moments but it does depend on the situation you're in, as well as how the song may be edited too.
Yup, I agree. In fact I’ve made a version of Prince’s 1999 album entirely out of the 7” versions and it’s a better overall experience than the original album. My 7” version is about 40 minutes, versus the actual albums 70 minutes which is fine if you’ve got the time but I don’t always have the time these days. I can almost listen to the entire 7” version on the way to or from work and I feel satisfied. Yeah actually, speaking of Prince and 7" (😏), my preferred version of When Doves Cry is the 7" version. When I learnt the album version was longer, I made that my default but after the point where the 7" ends, I always kept finding that the song was just overstaying it's welcome (and I also don't like the super high pitch synth he introduces for a bit there). Too long of an outro.
So can't say I didn't give it a shot for a while, but the 7" version is perfect for me. Great song.

Well there you go, never knew about that. I'd like it to get a wider release but if it doesn't, I guess I can just hunt down that release. Without hearing it, I'm thinking the shorter length is probably due to them removing the long count in at the start of the youtube version.

I hope we get that longer version of The Lady in my Life! Same. I have a CD rip of the Temperton compilation it was released on and it doesn't sound great, so it would be nice to have it remastered (properly)

It's almost like the Estate is deliberately trolling us. They hired Nelson George to direct the Thriller anniversary documentary. A dude who has talked so much BS and so vile things about MJ over the years. I already side eyed them for putting him in Bad 25 but at least there his role wasn't huge. But having him direct the Thriller documentary is like a slap in the face. I can only hope they aren't going to hire Wade Robson to choreograph the next project. SMH.

I haven't really seen this brought up anywhere else. What has this guy said?

I personally remember another one from 2005 which lamented different reactions to MJ's and R. Kelly's cases. I couldn't find the original article that NG wrote but I found a secondary source that quotes him: www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2005-07-24-0507240199-story.htmlHe said some real creepy stuff too and seems to suggest that the alleged molestation of girls isn't such a big deal as the alleged of boys. He also doesn't seem to respect MJ artistically: He should rather make a documentary about R. Kelly. He seems to prefer him both as a person and as an artist.

The sad thing is a Thriller anniversary project should be the easiest thing. It's the best selling album of all time. It's not just a fan favorite but also liked by the general public. It's a non-controversial era of MJ's life. Yet, even this the Estate somehow manages to fuck up.

It's a non-controversial era of MJ's life. Yet, even this the Estate somehow manages to fuck up. And even if we ignore these comments (which I don't think we should), the press release heavily suggests the docu will be about the impact of the album and the pop culture phenomenon it became. Afaik, that's also what George focuses on in his writing, moreso than music itself. Of course its impact is a key part of the Thriller story, but do we need another doco that focuses on that, rather than the creation of the album? And it seems like this will be another doco of the telling rather than showing variety, with Nelson writing that he conducted interviews with "artists impacted by his artistry." That suggests yet again a heavy emphasis on talking heads who everyone will have forgotten about in 5 years, and who had nothing to do with Thriller originally, telling us how cool Billie Jean is. Everyone knows the myth of Thriller, with the resources of the Estate it would be possible to show (and not tell us!) how the album came to be so great in the first place. But we will probably again just get tiny snippets of studio footage while the Weeknd talks over it.
