How are peeps feeling about Thriller40? Anyone genuinely excited? I’m relatively optimistically positively sort of kinda looking forward to it. I’m just not as excited as I was when Dangerous and History albums were released, or when I went to the HIStory tour, or when I saw Moonwalker in the cinema, or the Superbowl, or the short film premieres, of heck even the Oprah interview before she became an intolerable cunt, or when I got the Dancing The Dream book, or when the Dangerous Bucharest concert aired on the BBC and I recorded it on a VHS! Or lots of things.
If they reveal the last track is Ease On Down The Road I might boycott this shit show of a circus. How about you guys?

Honestly I kinda checked out when they started announcing songs that have already been released. Super excited to listen to the ones that we haven't heard on Spotify, though. I don’t know why I continuously allow myself to be a little disappointed in the estate at this point. I mean what was I expecting? It’s one thing their including already released tracks and we’re buying Thriller for the millionth time, but they also expect us to generate the excitement for ourselves. It’s impersonal which makes the relationship -what relationship Aaron?- cold and excludes the fans. With the Beatles you’ve got Giles Martin who’s a face to the product and who does interviews about each release and the hype it generates rubs off on you. Same with Elvis, same with Lennon. With Lennon we now have Sean replacing Yoko. These guys are so involved in what’s being released and their enthusiasm is infectious. It gets you excited. I mean there’s reasons to be happy, some unreleased tracks to look forward to, the documentary, the SACD, the MoFi which is out of most fans price range. But are we guaranteed we’re getting the short films in 4K and are we actually getting the documentary or is it just for these one-off events? And where’s the Making of Thriller? The biggest selling album in history is 40 years old and they can’t remaster/upscale a documentary that MJ funded to pay for the short film? Their lack of care and involvement is so loud. I know there’s the upcoming fan events but most MJ fans don’t live in London or Paris or New York or wherever these events are happening. They could have included the Making Of and short films on a disc, thrown the extended versions of tracks on the album disc and few extra new on the second disc. I’m being negative again. I’m happy enough with it but gawd they really do just throw us a few peanuts from time to time with zero commitment.

I'm very excited for it. The leaked songs will sound great. The leak of Shes Trouble, you can barely hear MJ as best buried beneath the synths.
It's no Bad 25, but it's just a shame MJ wasnt writing as much at this point.

I’m excited to a point. I am very happy for and looking forward to having a few new tracks. They could really do a lot tomorrow to hype the fanbase by announcing something unexpected.
I guess the overriding bone of contention for me has been the estates complete lack of knowledge or know-how when it comes to MJ and what his fans want, enjoy, expect. And their lack of promotional skills or lack of interest. They know full well that the fans have bought into MJ with their hearts therefore they’ll buy anything which means they don’t have to really do anything therefore they don’t.
When you see how other estates do it, and how they do it so well it’s a bit frustrating. There’s hype for this on the Hoffman forums. I mean that just shows the level of interest that is out there for this.

There's definitely unheard material/songs they could have included instead of already released material. Even album track demos that have never been released would have been better. No excuse really imo.

No excuse really imo. Honestly, I'm pretty sure Thriller and Human Nature have 5 or 6 vocal takes EACH. Human Nature also contains the original demo key version. Using the multitracks they could have given us so many different versions of those 2 songs alone. We will go around in circles with this Estate until they are put out to pasture. It'll never end. If we see faults, who else is going to point them out.

Not saying it couldn't be much better, but what's NOT to get excited about? 8 'new' tracks and 2 original versions of fantastic songs. If you've already got these as leaks then it's not the Estate's fault. For me, this is great. I'm not expecting to love the songs (I'm not keen on any of the new ones on Bad 25), but there may be a couple of gems and in any case, nearly 10 years after he died, I'm still getting 'new' songs and something to get excited about. Also, it's better than 2001 SE and T25. And both of those were in his lifetime.

Also, it's better than 2001 SE and T25. And both of those were in his lifetime. It's very substandard for a release deemed worthy enough of a 40th anniversary release in 2022. Look at the GNR releases, Queen. Even Linkin fucking Park. linkinpedia.com/index.php?title=Hybrid_Theory_(20th_Anniversary_Edition)Purple Rain was a sub par release compared to SOTT and 1999 etc, but it still had: Outtakes Demos All 7" mixes All 12" and extended mixes Alternate takes I'm excited for Thriller 40 but let's call a spade a spade. If you keep milking the whole "Biggest selling album of all time" shtick like they always do, then treat it as such. We all say MJ is worthy of being astride the Old Gods of music so why should we always have to settle for crumbs and be treated with disdain by the Estate and PR team? I'm glad you haven't heard any of the leaks, but I don't think anyone on this forum is actually giving out about the songs we have heard (I certainly am not). The complaints are mainly that previously released songs like Sunset Driver (available to buy digitally) are now being passed off as Thriller era DESPITE the Estate commissioning an Off The Wall era video for the MJ Experience Game. We are getting a half arsed B-Side that was recorded in 1978, and redubbed to make MJ and Quincy a quick buck (which was also previously released and available for purchase digitally). And the reason this is so annoying, is because there is a bonus "digital" disc where these songs SHOULD have been placed. They have lazily been added to the 2nd disc taking up the space of 2 other songs that we KNOW could have been better used - for example, the multitracks have leaked. We could have gotten alternate takes of songs, other songs we know have leaked but will not be anyway associated with Thriller 40. We are the idiots then expected not to question any of this and just be happy we are getting new music. Why should the bar be so low for Thriller, when Bad 25 set a much higher standard (promotion aside, we all know why promotion will not be like 2012). Bad 25 was far from perfect (not one of the amazing 12" mixes was an absolute crime) but for them to release what looks like a 40-45 minute disc of bonus material is an absolute farce. Because we know better. I'm still convinced that this is a "test the water" release, but I also fear that they are holding back certain unreleased songs (Hot Street or Niteline) because they plan on updating and releasing them. I have no problem saying I would die happy if I never heard a shitty updated/remixed/contemporised MJ song again as long as I live. But that's just specilation. If Thriller is the king, then treat it like the king. Because if adding Sunset Driver and Cant Get Outta The Rain is really considered to be a good idea by those with power in the Estate, then the road of shitty and divisive decisions will keep on going and going. Still excited though, it's a new fucking Michael Jackson release like.

The fact they've got Branca making content like this whilst the actual MJ social media does nothing is baffling, who wants to have to follow him to see this stuff lol?
