There are some good elements of this campaign like the MoFi vinyl and SACD which even has people outside the fandom excited. Of course, mostly in the audiophile community which is a limited community.
The part targeted at hardcore fans could and should have been done so much better. Including the campaign surrounding it. I'm actually excited to have MJ's videos in 4k in YouTube. It's been long overdue, but where's the promo? Will it even happen or are they just going to screen them at the fan events and put them in a box like they did with Thriller 3D?
I don't know if I'm even going to buy the T40. Apart from Out of the Rain I think the songs are okay and good, and I agree it's your fault if you have listened to leaked material before. We can't blame the Estate for using such material. On the other hand this could have been done so much better too like Innuendo detailed and it makes me said it hasn't. It will be on Spotify anyway, so maybe I won't buy it. Well, I probably will, but it really makes me wonder if it was better not to. I mean I support Thriller itself and contribute to the sales by buying the MoFi, so I wonder if I should not buy the T40 release to push them to try to do better next time. Although, if it flops, in their arrogance, their conclusion probably won't be that they didn't do it right, but that there's no interest for such material so they will do even less next time.
The MJ Estate is extremely lazy in putting together releases, out of date in its communication and on top of that very arrogant and they just refuse to listen to fans as to how they could improve. They don't even communicate with fans, other than a select few, the type who are star struck by meeting Branca. They created a bubble around them where they just refuse to listen to any criticism, no matter how constructive.

They haven't made it a very attractive package nor have they managed to build up any real excitement. I think it's better to send them a message and vote with your wallet. If they're put off of doing any further projects because of it... well that's fine. That just means they can't ruin another release every 5 years. I could change my mind, but I'm thinking I'll just stream at this point.

I don't need two identical copies of Thriller on vinyl - I'm not an audiophile. I'm looking forward to streaming the new content. But if they want fans to part money with the dying medium of physical media, then they need to do things right, which means giving me an incentive to buy the vinyl. Simple as.

It's actually crazy to think we are at the last day of announcements and the field is WIDE open. I was not expecting that. For days, "Chicago 1945" was 100% on it, then "Spice of Life". Next thing, it's an unheard song mentioned by MJ at some point in his life.
If you had asked me to bet my life savings at the start of this, I'd have bet that Hot Street and Niteline would be on there. The fact that at least 1 may not be is crazy.
Hopefully after all the posts, tweets and rumours the last song will spark a little more excitement to help us get to next Friday.
It has been nice discussing/complaining/dissecting an actual release and his music in a thread without any of the unpleasantness creeping in. I'd missed it, the frustration and all. In 8 days we will have at least a few new songs added to the canon that we will have to discuss and add to our playlists!

My expectations from his estate have been rock bottom since 2010 Cascio debacle, so tbh, the new content on this release has actually exceeded my very low expectations. I learnt a long time ago with MJs estate to keep your expectations low and then you can only be pleasantly surprised. I'm looking forward to hearing some new MJ music and am not gonna let his shabby estate ruin that for me.

Only thing I can hope is that they’re going to do a marketing blitz once it’s out and actually available to stream. It’s going to be pretty disappointing if what we’re getting now is essentially it. Low-key would not be overly surprised if the marketing failed for this album and it made barely a scratch, then the Estate turns it against us and goes “see, there’s no demand for expanded archival releases!”.
I will say, while like everyone else I’m keen to hear new MJ material for the first time in many years (going to stay upto midnight for it like I did with Xscape!), the concept of ‘Thriller 40’ is so unnecessary and feels like it’ll be redundant sooner than it should be because of Thriller 50. By the time we get to T50, that’ll be the fourth special edition of the album which just bloats his discography.
Thinking of the other albums, I’m honestly hoping we turn away from the idea that it needs to be an anniversary to actually do something for an album. Both the Estate and MJ Fans seem set on that idea, when really it would be great if they did some ‘Archive Collection’ series where every few years they focused on a new album, regardless of how old it turns that year. Neither Purple Rain nor Revolver were celebrating significant anniversaries (33 and 56 years respectively) when their box sets came out, yet both do a fantastic job of honouring the original albums legacy and celebrating it.

If you go onto Spotify and into The Beatles “Revolver Super Deluxe” there’s a screen on top and if you press it Gills Martin appears on the screen talking about The Beatles making Revolver. Even if you’re not a Beatles fan it is worth it alone to watch it to see what can be done when you throw your heart and soul into an album you love.open.spotify.com/clip/59f6141cb7be4275b0455b5817ecd4db?si=b5n3R_8bSU6S-Cc3UyCkGg&chapter_id=27537a6c036d408a9a02a2e3798d8efb&context_uri=spotify%3Aalbum%3A7C221PnWhYGv8Tc0xSbfdcAbsolutely wonderful stuff from The Beatles estate as always. Beautiful little vignettes of info with some lovely candid photos of the boys. Classy as always. I’m okay with the anniversary thing if it’s consistent. But with MJ it’s not. It’s a mess. You either have 25th or 50th anniversaries for every album or you don’t. A 40th anniversary for an album who’s last anniversary edition was a 25th anniversary makes no sense. Logically the next milestone would have been a 50th. I can understand Thriller25 being a test-the-water releases back when streaming and YouTube were still in their infancy -or not even a thing- and poor MJ genuinely didn’t know that he was still loved by the world, and it was genuinely an unknowing climate for him to release something into the world. But for Thriller40, at a glance anyone can see MJ’s numbers are massive on streaming and YouTube. So the water is being used plenty and the temperature is pretty damn hot. But yes, an Archive Collection like McCartney or an Ultimate Collection like Lennon would have allowed for more freedom as to when any given album could be released. Or like Prince’s Super Deluxe releases. It’s sort of a weird dichotomy though that the bar for MJ releases is so low and yet at the same time so welcomed. And I include myself in that. I’m very happy to get a few new tracks. The leaked tracks, I welcome them. Heck, I encourage them. I have zero issues with leaked tracks. As to wether people buy it or not and will it make a difference? It won’t. If you buy it or don’t buy it, it will change nothing. In fact, if this sells really impressively it will change nothing. You’re allegiance and loyalty to MJ that you’ve held for your entire life changes nothing. Not in this case. These people are not in love with MJ’s art the way we’re in love with MJ’s art, or the way Giles Martin is in love with The Beatles art. They have shown this continuously with their actions or none actions throughout the years. They couldn’t even allow MJ’s music to be a part of the upcoming award winning Sonic Fantasy documentary. A situation that could only have meant it was a win win for MJ and the MJ estate. All they needed to do was say yes! Sure, they’ve commissioned their own documentary for this but they could have tied-in the Bruce Swedien/Thriller story and had the official and indie endorsed documentary as part of much greater promo campaign but because a fan made it -ya know, someone who actually loves MJ’s art- they never even got back to him. But hey, they don’t have to. That guys work will act as promo anyway! Why should the estate help or endorse or get involved? That would mean making a phone call or signing a piece of paper or possibly both! It’s not “the Michael Jackson Estate” it never has been. It’s “the Branca & Co Estate” it’s not about MJ’s art. That’s only ever been a means to an end. It’s about a fancy lifestyle with sports cars and yachts. And it’s about telling anyone who’s in love with MJ’s art to fuck off and be happy with what we throw your way, when and if we decide to.

Unfortunately this seems to be very correct. Even when you read articles clearly commissioned and fed by the Estate they always focus on what the Estate thinks their achievements are (turning around MJ's debts, making lots of money as an Estate etc) and never on MJ the artist.

I noticed this too earlier and my presumption was that the background music was added in through the TikTok app directly, where you can add music by searching them up under the 'sounds' tab. If you look up Thriller on TikTok and select the 'sounds' tab, the official version isn't there (at least for me, though official versions of other MJ songs are) and they chose the most popular one that came up. Obviously, could've edited this with an actual editing program to get the actual song but yeah. That'd be why most likely.

Branca’s whole demeanour and attitude reminds me of a wonderful verse from a Dylan song;
“Someone's got it in for me They're planting stories in the press Whoever it is I wish they'd cut it out quick But when they will I can only guess They say I shot a man named Gray And took his wife to Italy She inherited a million bucks And when she died it came to me I can't help it if I'm lucky”
😂🤣
