I get the frustration, but I guess something is better than nothing. Don't want to go to my grave never having heard the best of what MJ left behind ya know? Even if it does mean tolerating the estates substandard releases. This is why I'm hoping eventually someone else will take over the estate. Someone who actually cares about Michael and doesn't resent his fans. Until then, I honestly do believe nothing is better than what they've dished up over the last 13 years. They've done more damage than good. this I even say, *resent Michael

I'm both. This release so far is abysmal, even in the context of archival reissues, but I'm still looking forward to midnight tonight when I get to hear at least 4 new Michael Jackson recordings I've never heard before. I'm also looking forward to seeing the short films in 4K too. Perhaps the fact my expectations weren't really that high in the first place helped.Yup, it did. And more power to you. I have these very romantic and idealistic notions of what I wanted these things to be which is a bit foolish. All of the romance and idealism died along with MJ anyway. Despite my exhausting negativity tonight/today there are things that I’ll enjoy. Some new tracks, the 4K films, the MoFi, and possibly -reminding myself to not expect much- a half decent documentary. Also we cannot forget about Sonic Fantasy which is coming. To be fair, even if your expectations for Thriller40 were for them to not shit all over it... they didn't even meet those expectations.

Ffs. Don't understand this decision at all. Thanks for the update SoCavSeems like they have retained the ugly MS Paint logo for the vinyl release too... Oh goddammit. I'm so torn on this album. While I'm glad they're doing anything I'm also disappointed with certain decisions. What were they thinking with that logo?! And now I'm hearing the songs weren't mastered right? Is that on all the releases or just the 40th anniversary one?

I was as positive as anyone about the new material, but that can't save how awful this has been treated by the Estate.

My expectations were in the toilet and they even managed to shock me with that Thriller40 logo. Now there's songs recorded in the 70's on it instead of Hot Street and Nightline lol. I got used to having nothing new to listen to between Xscape and now. Happy to go back to that until Branca carks it and can't shit all over MJ's legacy and gaslight the fans anymore.

When Prince takes over the Estate, in like 9485982347982347928347 years, the fandom can finally heal.

I was trying really hard to be positive about this release because, well, why nitpick? But then I took one look at that ugly-ass single disc vinyl and the shoddiness of it all just irked the fuck out of me. All I'm asking for is his releases to at least look official, is that too much to ask? That vinyl just looks like a hokey bootleg. Shocking treatment, but I guess on-brand for an estate who officially released Breaking News and Monster on a Michael Jackson album.

It’s like a bootleg of the Thriller album that a relative buys you for Christmas thinking it’s the real deal. You smile and say thanks knowing that their clueless or a cheap ass.

My parents got me a Prince Black Album bootleg for Christmas one year. My dear Mum says "I heard it's really rare." I played along. Even that looked more official than this monstrosity.

I guess that's better than the ENTIRE album being like that. But still... even the demos on Bad 25 sounded pretty good, at least to my ears.

Oh yeah, the documentary. Completely forgotten about that! I know that Michael started extensively recording himself working after Thriller (courtesy of Sir Paul saying to MJ he wished there was more footage of The Beatles at work) so there won't be as much new BTS footage as Bad 25's documentary, so I'm not expecting that, but still. Keen to see what new footage might pop up in there!

Well, even the documentary they managed to fuck up by picking someone to direct who had no respect for MJ throughout the years. Who in 2005 favorably compared R. Kelly to him both regarding the allegations against them and their musical significance... If there's new behind the scenes footage in it I hope someone will make a compilation of them and that's all I care about this doc. Like said, the rest probably is just going to be John Legend and co talking about how Thriller inspired them, anyway. I'm more excited about Making of Thriller maybe getting the HD treatment and being put on YouTube. Maybe my hopes are futile there. I simply remember that Keen (who always seems to have good sources within Chinese Sony) mentioned that there will be 5 upgraded videos. I was wondering what that could be beyond the 3 music videos of the Thriller era and I'm dreaming about Making of Thriller as one of them. I know it might end up as just a dream. Then I'll watch it in old fashioned way rather than the new doc. I'm creating my own T40 celebrations.
The complaints are completely legit re how this has been handled. But I'm picking up the bits that I can support and leave alone the rest. I feel by buying the MoFi I support MJ and his original work being handled the right way, but not the Estate's abysmal treatment of this campaign. Not the bad looking album sleeves, not the badly mixed outtakes (if those rumours are true). I will listen to the new songs on Spotify.
