You both seem to be strongly of the opinion that this is a purely black and white matter with no grey areas, which is probably why no one else is really posting (well, me at least) because it would probably send this thread off in unnecessary and unpleasant tangents. The response to Tony's comment came across as a bit "you don't know what you're talking about" also.

The response to Tony's comment came across as a bit "you don't know what you're talking about" also. My view is very much informed by knowledge of terrorism, security and counter-terrorism as well as the various rejections of the peace deals on offer since 1947 all rejected by Palestinian leaders. Rather than seeing it as black and white, I see it as a twin track process where the political problems cannot be solved without the security problem being dealt with. That is informed by the true reality of the Northern Ireland peace process which is widely touted yet misunderstood as the blueprint for all other deals globally. From my perspective, it's massively naive for anyone to think a ceasefire is part of the solution as well as thinking that the military side of things has zero role to play in finding solutions. Western audiences, by and large, are so far removed from the realities of war and terrorism that they hold platitudes which is itself a sign of privilege in an unstable world. Hamas has proven to NOT be interested in peace deals or governing Gaza. Its entire existence is geared towards attacking and trying to destroy Israel. Arab States play a role here which is why the gradually increasing normalisation of relations with Israel is so hated by Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and other groups. To enable this, Hamas and Hezbollah must be so decimated they cannot successfully attack Israel again. Their links to Iran will have to be severed as well. I think most aren't commenting here is because of their relative lack of knowledge of terrorism and also the evolving state of Middle East affairs. That's fine. 🤷♂️

Check out Mosab Hassan Yousef, son of a Hamas founder, who became an informer for Israel between 1997 and 2007. In doing so, he was able to help prevent terrorist attacks. He has a book on his experiences, a film called "The Green Prince" was made and he has given lectures at various universities in the United States on the reality of Gaza, West Bank & Hamas. Video of him speaking to CNN uploaded about 10 hours ago: edition.cnn.com/videos/world/2023/10/23/israel-spy-hamas-founding-leader-son-gaza-lead-vpx.cnn

I respect that Tony's experience is different, but to deny there's a huge antisemitism problem in certain spaces is looking the other way IMO. When things like the below happen do you really think there's nothing to see here? And this is not an isolated, one-off incident, BTW, just the latest. (And I realize that he was talking about the UK, but also in the UK police stated antisemitic incidents rose 1350 percent.)

Provisional Sinn Féin & Provisional IRA's members as well as other accounts, including Arabic ones, have been spreading AI generated images the last few days. The tell-tale signs I've circled in red in both images: If an image doesn't make sense in terms of physics, it's very likely to be fake. Look at the girl in green top - not possible! Look VERY closely at hands and feet as AI struggles with digits. Don't be led by emotions first as that's the easiest way by far for fake images and misinformation to spread. Conflict zone photos don't look highly stylised like these examples. Be sceptical. Simple as that.

I'm sure there are deaths, including civilians, that's unfortunately inevitable in a war, especially when one party deliberately uses them as human shields and there's this culture of martyrdom. Here's for example a guy bragging about how while Jews are hiding there children in shelters while attacked, Palestinians pride in their children not hiding but playing outside. I'm also sure the Hamas published numbers are highly exaggerated. We have seen in the hospital bombing story, not only that they blamed what was a misfiring Islamic Jihad rocket on Israel but that they immediately made a claim of 500+ deaths. For every critical thinker that should have been suspicious right there. How come Israel needs days and weeks to evaluate the number of deaths after October 7, but Hamas can tell within minutes of an attack that 500 people died? As it turns out the rocket hit the parking lot and the real number of casualties is closer to somewhere 20-30. So I'm not taking any Hamas numbers at face value. It's their interest to publish exaggerated numbers. Also they don't distinguish between terrorists and real civilians in their numbers. Having said that, war is horrible and there are and will be innocent deaths. That's on Hamas as far as I'm concerned. If they released the hostages and surrendered all of this nightmare would end. Regarding the political side, I have read an interesting tidbit in the NY Times (not Israel's best friend) from a US diplomat, Dennis Ross: www.nytimes.com/2023/10/27/opinion/hamas-war-gaza-israel.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

A lot of people have been giving off an awful lot about war crimes since that hospital attack Respect mentioned there. Here's the reality from the Geneva Convention: Your daily reminder a lot of people really aren't well read enough on the subject of war crimes before shooting their wee mouths off. Hamas have long been known to launch attacks from hospitals and to use them as a base. For example, Fatah attacked Al-Shifa hospital in the 2008-09 conflict and Hamas fired at Fatah from within the hospital.
