1. Unbreakable - The track that gave me hope. Good opener even if a rehashed subject. As with all the first 3, a better, less mechanical production would have been an improvement 7/10 2. Heartbreaker - A Fats free version would be nice. Fun, bit different 6/10 3. Invincible - Like it more than most. It's just a good track again with dodgy production 7/10 4. Break of Dawn - Yep, it's okay. Great vocals. 6/10 5. Heaven Can Wait - Again, its good. Like it more than a lot of you. Still waiting for a song that sounds like Michael Jackson though. 6/10 6. You Rock My World - Oh here you go. It's unmistakably Michael Jackson, but not as good. But I'll take a below par MJ more than almost anybody else 8/10 7. Butterflies - Beautiful but still not amongst his best. Amongst the best on the album though. 8/10 8. Speechless - At last another pure MJ songs that shows he did actually still give a shit. The voice. 8/10 9. 2000 Watts - Always read 2000 Watts discussion with me being Joey eating Rachel's trifle (not a euphamism)! Well, I like it. I've made a case for this being lead single before. 6.5/10 10. You Are My Life - Yeah, so sweet it'll give you toothache. But I like it. Was at a Christmas in about 2005 and overheard this as someone's wedding song. Probably divorced by now. 7/10 11. Privacy - Fuck right off 4/10 12. Don't Walk Away - Fuck off even further. Without a doubt the worst MJ song from any adult solo album. Completely unplayable. 3/10 13. Cry - When he was 5, my son asked me 'Daddy, why did R Kelly write the worst 3 singles of Michael Jackson's career? Was he some sort of cunt?. It turned out that yes, he was. 5/10 14. The Lost Children - Again, I like it. One of his Disney-esque melody ones. Nowhere near as good as Heal The World though. 6/10 15. Whatever Happens - "I can't help but feel that in an alternate universe this would've been number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks." said MattyJam and I agree. Not as brilliant as everyone thinks it is though. Thank you man. 7.5/10 16. Threatened - Thank God between this and WH we finish on a high. I suppose if YRMW was Smooth Criminal lite then this is Thriller Zero. From his horror genre, then Is It Scary and Ghosts win hands down, but it's still good. And clever. And funky. 8/10 Here endeth the lesson.

Invincible is my favourite MJ album (hence the name).
Unbreakable A killer opener, sick beat, like a Scream 2.0, but with a more universal message of defiance. 10
Heartbreaker The production on this is insane, I'd love to get the multi-tracks to hear exactly what's going on. Mj did the programming on this according to the credits and you can hear his beatboxing throughout, not just at the end (it's buried in the mix). Love it. 9
Invincible Could've made a great single, with a TWYMMF 2.0 music vid. Funky and fun. 8
Break of Dawn I like the chilled out vibe of this, but I've never loved it as much as others seem to. 6
Heaven Can Wait Beautiful song, showcasing that DAYUM, the man can SANG! I can see why MJ loved this one so much. 9
You Rock My World A classic MJ song in my book. Made for the dancefloor. Its so great after HIStory to finally have an MJ song you can just dance to. 10
Butterflies A favourite for me, his vocals are divine and the production is on point. MJ showing the younger cats how it's done! 10
Speechless Always makes me cry. There is something magical about this song, I'm an atheist but it really sounds like it's from God. 10
2000 Watts A great song to dance to - would've made an interesting single back in 2001. Love his gruff sexy low voice. 8
You Are My Life Very tender and heartfelt but I would've preferred he stuck with Shout over this. But I do like it a lot. 7
Privacy Angry MJ always delivers the goods! The stuff about Lady Diana is hard to listen to. A sad song but one that takes no prisoners. 8
Don't Walk Away So romantic, I always wondered if he was singing about LMP. 8
Cry My least listened to and least favourite on the album. I don't hate it, but am not a big fan of YANA either (although I did like One More Chance). 5
The Lost Children My favourite song from side 2 of the album. I love everything about this and for some reason it's always reminded me of an Irish waltz or something. 10
Whatever Happens We should've had a video for this one. I love how different it is for MJ, I remember playing it to my friend once and she said "I didn't know MJ made music like this." So sultry and smooth, but as always with Mike, there's a bite to it. 10
Threatened So glad he gave a nod to this in This Is It - I just wish he performed a bit more. Such a cool beat, musically it reminds me a bit of CLHGA from Dangerous, it has that same thrashing assault on the ears beat. 9

Unbreakable 9/10 - One of the better songs on the album.
Heartbreaker - 5/10 - I don't like it much and I don't think it is a very MJ-like track. Invincible - 4/10 - This sounds like a poor man's Unbreakable. It is unnecessary. Break of Dawn - 8/10 - It's a good song, but a bit generic for MJ.
Heaven Can Wait - 8/10 - Same as the previous one. You Rock My World - 10/10 - This was actually a good choice for a lead single (despite of MJ wanting Unbreakable, I think). It is one of the best songs on the album. As time went by it grew on me even more and now I think it is a good addition to MJ's catalog that could rightfully make it to an MJ best-of album. Butterflies - 6/10 - I am not as much a fan of this song as many other fans seem to be. Speechless - 6/10 - Same. Over the years some of MJ's most saccharine songs grew on me but this never managed to. 2000 Watts - 4/10 - So out of character for MJ IMO. You Are My Life - 7/10 - Yeah, simple, nursery-rhyme and all, but it's something that MJ could get away with for me due to the sincerity with that he could sing such songs. Privacy - 3/10 - If I have to name the worst song in MJ's entire catalog this would be a strong candidate.
Don't Walk Away - 7/10 - It's OK, but again, it is way too generic for MJ IMO.
Cry - 5/10 - I am no big fan of the ballads R. Kelly wrote for MJ. The Lost Children - 6/10 - Very average from MJ. Whatever Happens - 10/10 - Besides You Rock My world this is the best song of of the album. It should have beenΒ single, it should have had a video, instead of Cry. Threatened - 10/10 - This is a song that I seem to like more than the average fan. I read MJ wanted a video for it and I would have loved it. I like the idea for how the rap was made of Rod Serling's speech and I love the lyrics. Interestingly, it might be I most listen to from this album apart from YRMW.
Overall, as I have said in previous discussions of this album, my big problem with Invincible is that to me it is the least MJ-esque album of all his albums. Often I feel that much of it hardly has anything to do with him and those tracks that are his songs are not among his strongest songs.Β When I read Mike Smallcombe's "Making Michael" book that only confirmed it to me that this was the album MJ was least interested in and least involved in.
Interesting takes. I'm always surprised you don't like The Lost Children more though. It's every bit as good as Heal The World imo and musically very similar. I think Heal the World is often scoffed at just for being too sentimental, but it's a gorgeous melody. I don't think The Lost Children is anywhere near that gorgeousness.

Well, to be fair, HTW has a more universal message and resonated so well because it was released at a time when MJ could get away with putting that out. TLC is more niche in its subject matter and would've been career suicide to release as a single in 2001. Doesn't make it less of a song. Personally, I much prefer TLC. HTW is beautiful, but more made for a stadium and not really the kind of song you find yourself playing around the house or on the train, ya know?!

I play HTW anywhere, so I'd disagree with that part. As I say, I love the song. Inonly listen to TLC in an Invincible play though, as I do with most other songs on the album. I listen to HTW very regularly.

For me, its a song made for that kind of experience. I couldn't imagine listening to it on the commute. Probably because I have murderous thoughts about the crowds and delays, so HTW don't quite cut it for me in that setting. π
