I've noticed lately, MJ lagging behind on the streaming numbers compared to some of his contemporaries. Here are the latest numbers (I tried to include mainly artists who are now seen as primarily legacy acts):
1. Elton John 56.3m 2. Queen 53.7m 3. Mariah Carey 45.8m 4. Madonna 44.7m 5. Justin Timberlake 39.4m 6. Britney Spears 39m 7. Michael Jackson 38.3m 8. Abba 33.9m 9. The Beatles 33.6m 10. Guns N Roses 28.9m 11. The Rolling Stones 28.4m 12. Bon Jovi 27.4m 13. Christina Aguilera 26.8m 14. Whitney Houston 26.4m 15. George Michael 21.6m 16. Bob Marley 18.5m 17. David Bowie 18.2m 18. Kylie Minogue 15.6m 19. Prince 12m 20. Janet Jackson 5.4m
MJ used to be ahead of both Mariah and Madonna, but has fallen way behind both. Obviously both of those acts are alive and touring, which gives them the upper hand, but even still, I can't help but feel like the lack of decent releases by his estate has also contributed towards the stagnant numbers. It's been over a decade since Xscape and we've had nothing to get excited about since.
It will be interesting to see what happens once the biopic drops.

Are Justin Timberlake and Britney really legacy artists? Neither have had a hit in years and their core audience are likely over 35.

I’m disappointed to see that. And surprised. More than anything it’s the names ranking above MJ that shock me.
I guess the truth is MJ is no longer alive, which, let’s face it, has to have a major impact on this situation. If he were alive and active and still releasing he’d be way at the height of that list.

I don't think it's any coincidence that the top 2 artists both had hugely successful biopics in recent years. Hopefully "Michael" can do for MJ what "Bohemian Rhapsody" did for Queen and "Rocketman" for Elton.

Monthly listens are a rather misleading way of determining streaming success as they include duets and it only reflects on the last 28 days. So, of course, Mariah, who has a major Christmas hit, is going to be ahead of MJ in the period that includes Christmas. She'll fall back behind him next month. Both Madonna and Elton John highly benefits with current duets with current, popular artists, not from their back catalog. Queen are probably the only artist from this list who are really ahead of MJ (it really is true that the biopic boosted their popularity by a lot) but if we also look at YouTube numbers MJ is actually very close to them.
I'm going to show you the actual streaming numbers when I get home.

Yeah, this doesn't mean anything at all.

So what is "monthly listeners"? It's just that. How many individual listeners an artist had in the past 28 days. Nothing more. The last 28 days included Christmas, so that would boost the monthly listeners number of artists who have popular Christmas hits that are included on Spotify Christmas playing lists. From the above list this includes Mariah, Britney, Elton John and Queen. That this is indeed a factor in the boost of their monthly listeners is well visible on their "Popular" Top 10 lists (that list is also created by the current success of a song, not necessarily overall success) which all feature Christmas songs. Mariah: All I Want for Christmas is You (her #1). Britney: My Only Wish (This Year) (her #3), Elton John: Merry Christmas (his #3), Queen: Thank God It's Christmas (their #8). So the Christmas factor is well included in these artists' monthly listeners, which factor will disappear next month as the "last 28 days" period shifts past the Christmas period.
Then there are artists like Madonna or Elton John whose numbers are heavily boosted by current duets with current artists. Therefore I wouldn't even call them "legacy artists", not in the sense that they only rely on their legacy now and aren't releasing new stuff. The only ones of this list above MJ who are in that category are Queen and perhaps Britney (although she too has a recent duet with Elton John). (Justin Timberlake is just about to release a new album.)
Here's a better way of looking at the numbers:
MJ:
Madonna
As you can see Madonna's current "monthly listeners" number is heavily driven by that current duet with the Weeknd, otherwise her back catalog is nowhere near MJ's.
Britney's back catalog does surprisingly well, but not as well as MJ's. I assume Britney's current renaissance has a lot to do with her currently published autobiography and the documentary about her.
As you can see he too is nowhere near MJ. I guess his monthly listener numbers were pushed by a current duet with one of the BTS members (3D).
While Christmas is still included in her "montly listeners" stats on Spotify, as you can see when Christmas is over, on a normal day she is nowhere near MJ. Like I said, by next month her "monthly listeners" number will fall back behind MJ.
Now Elton is pretty close. MJ has more overall streams but Elton has a better daily total currently, at least when we count songs that he did in collaboration (duets, features). When it comes to just solo stuff, MJ is ahead again. Also, as you can see Elton's current numbers are driven heavily by a recent remix duet with Dua Lipa. And of course his monthly listeners includes his Christmas song too.
Now, Queen are really the only one who are outdoing MJ, on Spotify at least. That is so since the success of Bohemian Rhapsody, the movie, so they really benefited from it a lot.
Also keep in mind that MJ actually has a lot less songs than a lot of these artists above. Yet, he is outdoing all of them on overall streams, except for Queen (who also have about twice as many songs as MJ).
On the other hand, when it comes to YouTube, not even Queen can compete with MJ.
The others on YouTube:
So in short: I don't think we have anything to complain about.

BTW, Christmas: the Jackson 5 is also always heavily boosted by the Christmas period due to their Christmas album. So currently they have 15 million monthly listeners with "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" being their most successful song during this period. But as the "last 28 days" window will shift from Christmas they too will fall back to normal next month.

Janet's numbers are shocking. Poor Janet lol. Well she was blocked on YouTube for a long time maybe that’s why. Also though she’s great, she’s not as big as Michael worldwide outside North America and Japan

Some other interesting statistics. When you check out Billie Jean's statistics on YouTube (MJ's most popular song), there's a trend of its popularity being on the rise. In 2018 it was the #314 most viewed music video. In 2019 it was #386 (its worst year, I guess the LN effect, although interestingly the song's best day ever was January 16, 2019 which I think is the day LN was announced). In 2020 it was #321. In 2021 it was #187. In 2022 it was #184. In 2023 it was #97. Source: kworb.net/youtube/video/Zi_XLOBDo_Y.htmlSo the tendency is actually a rise in popularity. Another interesting list is the dead artists list where Billie Jean is at #5 overall (an there are a number of other MJ videos well placed on the list as well), but when it comes to current daily streams (order it by the "yesterday" column) it's #1, so it's catching up with the videos that are overall ahead of it. kworb.net/youtube/topvideos_deceased.html

To be fair to Janet, she's sort of been in semi-retirement for about a decade now.
As for MJs numbers, I would say he's doing pretty well for a deceased artist, especially taking into consideration the negative publicity he's had to endure since 2019.
