The YT channel just took down all of the tapes… Nooo On the last video they said they would post volume 8 soon. I wonder why they took them down? Is it part of their premium subscription now or did they receive a copyright strike? I was looking forward to these each week, what a bummer. Edit: on another video someone asked them if they could reupload the MJ tapes somewhere else. They responded 5 minutes ago: "Sorry but you can only listen to them on this channel. New episode coming up this week. Stay tuned!" So at least we will get new tapes. But they don't own them I guess? What a strange situation.

I hope they don't get put under some paywall moving forward. I always thought it was risky releasing these tapes snippet by snippet in case the estate has a problem with them. But I get that the channel wants to build suspense and subscribers so uploading weekly makes sense from an engagement perspective. Also, I've been downloading the tapes to eventually make a compilation so thankfully I have them all!

I was holding off on listening to them, and was upset to find that they're gone now.

The YT channel just took down all of the tapes… Due to copyright claim by Executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson. You won't be hearing any more from that channel.

Yeah, that seems like the most plausible scenario. Does the estate own his speaking voice? I guess the falls under “likeness”. Maybe the interviewer Robert Hilburn took issue? Who knows? Oddly enough, The channel replied to a comment that they would continue posting new tapes, but I just checked to see if they said anything else and that comment has been deleted. Definitely Fishy… Wish they just posted the whole tape instead of bread-crumbing it for maximum engagement to avoid the inevitable. UGH

Why am I not surprised... they just love to take away cool stuff and then we never see it. These tapes, The Last Photoshoot documentary, possibly Sonic Fantasy if the parties Marcos Cabota referred to as the ones preventing the widespread release of the documentary are indeed the Estate... I'm probably forgetting some things.

How can they prevent a widespread release of Sonic Fantasy? It doesn't use MJ's music.

UGH The embedded video itself tells us the Estate Executors put a strike on it. Nothing to do with Robert. That channel, it turns out, was apparently being run by people who'd been trying to make money out of Michael Jackson for some years now. Instead of earning it themselves. Sonia Lowe who, along with Howard Mann, was sued some years ago by the Estate. She was also involved in the doco "Remembering Michael" supposedly from Katherine Jackson. It's gone. Good. This is not like someone uploaded material for free like I did years ago with the California Raisins clip. Try to monetise material like this and you'll get a copyright strike. Quite rightly too. But, yes, the Estate owns Michael's voice as well. Whatever Michael Jackson owned in life is what his Estate owns in his death by extension.

The reason I don't believe this is the Estate is that they don't have the power to get every major steaming company to turn it down. Hell, they could hardly even promote their own documentary, Thriller 40, which eventually came out on Paramount, but that's not one of the biggest streaming services. Nothing compared to Netflix, Apple or Amazon.
