I will never understand the LMP hate in this community. I saw a bunch of hate on twitter recently and it really irks me, so I must rant, forgive me...
Listen, I understand some just genuinely don’t care much either way about her and are fairly neutral on the whole thing, but the hate she received and STILL receives after her passing, I don’t get. Some are even going as far as calling her a racist??
The main gripe fans have against her is some of the things she said about MJ in the early 2000s. I have seen and read most of these interviews and I agree that she said some not-so-nice things but, imo, she never says anything THAT horrible, she mainly sounds annoyed, embarrassed, hurt, and overall, very bitter. However, I feel like people fail to understand the context of the LMP/MJ situation and the media environment at the time these interviews were done.
I think most fans agree that the early 2000s were a rough time for MJ, and the media was particularly hard on him. He was being scrutinized left and right and the dehumanizing was rampant. This was the exact media landscape Lisa Marie walked into. In these interviews people take issue with, it's so obvious these journalists were anxious to get dirt on him and sadly sometimes she fell into their trap. I mean most of the people that interviewed her blatantly shamed her for being with him and made her feel crazy for it. While I wish she didn’t fall victim to the media peer pressuring her to sometimes participate in the MJ bashing, You have to understand the media’s attitude at that time and that she more or less was pressured into talking shit.
Let me be clear, I am not excusing her for the shit talk! but I feel like people are missing the broader context and just like to cherry-pick negative sound bites or quotes to justify their hatred. And as I said, it was never THAT bad imo. She's human! And these were just her feelings after a tumultuous relationship and she expressed them as she should be allowed to do! Obviously it's going to be a biased account of their relationship, it's not fact, it's a highly emotion-driven opinion! However, she has always been consistent that she truly loved him and that it was a real relationship/marriage, especially in interviews after MJ’s death when she went into greater detail.
I just feel like people don’t extend her any grace or sympathy especially since she later admitted regret to having bad-mouthed him because of her hurt and confusion. LMP is allowed to feel however she wants to feel about the way things went down in that relationship, after all, we weren’t there and have no clue what it would be like to be married to MJ, I think most mature fans can admit it would probably be challenging, to say the least.
Side note: Also, fans that STILL push the narrative that it was a PR relationship? Those fans confuse me to no end. What are they implying with that notion? That MJ was some heartless master manipulator? Or worse...
I just can’t stand people making nothing relationships or professional relationships into something and fantasizing about what could’ve been with people on the fringe of his life ( i.e Shana, Whitney, some of the short film girls, etc. ) but people downplay the ACTUAL relationships he had.
Also, I am not trying to glorify this relationship either, I in no way think that LMP was his “one and only” or anything like that, but, I do think she was a very significant woman in his life and that there was a real love and bond between them. Although the marriage was short-lived, they were in each other’s lives for a lot longer than the duration of the marriage and she was a true supporter and rock for him when the 93' allegations broke.
Whew!... Anyways, What do you guys think? Is it just pure jealousy/immaturity or is there more to it?
