They've also been performing Prostitute a lot lately. Smoothgangsta was right, it was a big fucking deal for a lot of us hardcore GNR fans, seeing Slash performing on these songs - a lot of which many fans assumed were written about the breakup of the original band. The line "you know where to put your 'just shut up and sing'" from Sorry is thought to be directed towards Slash, so watching them perform this song together now is beyond surreal. There are some incredible live performances from the 2006 tour and the 2010 tour of the Chinese Democracy material, where Axl was firing on all cylinders. My favourites on the album are Shacklers Revenge, Better and Catcher In The Rye. Aazzaabb, you mentioned in that post I deleted about JFK being the inspiration for Catcher In The Rye, but the song is actually written about Mark Chapman - the guy who shot John Lennon. Chapman was carrying a copy of Catcher In The Rye with him when he shot Lennon, and there is a theory out there that the book is a trigger for assassination attempts, as it has been linked to an oddly high number of murders and attempted murders. I also love Shacklers Revenge, which is about school shootings and what motivates the people who carry out these atrocities ("I don't believe there's a reason" Axl sings in the chorus). What I actually said -or was trying to say- about Catcher In The Rye is that the lyric -can't remember it now, something about a gun- was what struck Axl so profoundly and that he probably would have read the book as a kid in school as it was mandatory reading for a certain generation in the American education system. What I'm saying is it's much the same as what struck him about the assenation of Kennedy in Civil War; the gun and the assenation. And then later, what was coincidental or telling was the sample from the film Cool Hand Luke; "what we've got here is failure to communicate....." which was used in Civil War makes a reapearance, as a nod to Civil War but also probably a reference to something else? Actually, I think its on Madagascar alongside the Martin Luther King sample. Magnificent track actually. I can't seem to get the point I'm trying to make across as I have people talking to me. And I'm guy so not capable of multitasking! I remember hearing a debunking of the Catcher In The Rye statistic simply put down to the fact that a whole generation were brought up with the book so it was inevitable that it was a common theme in the make-up of these crazies. But yes, Chapman was a bit obsessed with that book. I read it years ago and didn't really enjoy it, but the main character keeps repeating a certain line to himself, I can't remember now. I read it more out of intrigue as to why it had such an impact rather than just setting that aside and reading it. I was taken up with looking for holes, or answers or whatever it supposedly was that had such a profound effect on people. Reading Chinese Whispers at the moment and Slash seemed very passive aggressive at times after the Use Your Illusions tour and Axl bringing in another musician to play over Slash's guitar on Sympathy For The Devil wasn't a good move. I remember reading about Duffs pancreas exploding from all the substance abuse but everything seemed to implode around 94/95, all brewing since late in 93. Axl surrounding himself with management and lawyers also and communicating through then was always going to end in disaster. When the original members of a group can't talk face to face anymore, its over.

Smooth, did you create the Chinese Whispers collection? What a labour of love that looks like! Browsing it now whilst relistening to the album. Thanks for the video links also, gonna watch them after the second listen and might dive into the demo's tomorrow evening. Seriously, this is epic. No I didn't haha. I think it was a group of fans that gathered the information together over the years. Yeah, the more I'm reading through it the more I'm seeing how much of a monumental effort it is. It's the ultimate behind the scenes fly on the wall. Would be cool if they released a 10th anniversary boxset with Chinese Whispers in book form with tons of photos and also the demos. This is possibly the ultimate making of an album/imploding of a band story ever told!! I don't know, but it probably wouldn't be as good an album without the history of it and the whole thing deserves way more attention.

2010 was definitely a good year for Axl

I'm going to use this post to brag about the fact that I have regular email contact with Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal. You may touch me.

I can't tell whether or not Axl's voice sounds good or fucked here. Sounds a little rough.

I'm curious if a 90's version of This I Love exists, Axl talked about having written and recorded it in the early 90s and the vocals from the final version clearly aren't from the early 90s. Maybe 99 like a lot of the vocals on the album? Not sure.

Some people are saying it's from 2001,not sure though. It's sounds unfinished for sure but it's quite similar to the album version. I'll send you a pm.

It featured Tommy Stinson on lead vocals, Axl's sings on the chorus and Bumblefoot plays lead. Was a decent little song.

Yeah I have that on my PC, apparently that's just a demo and there's a version with only Axl on it.

I've been listening to a lot of Use Your Illusions lately. They are such great albums, to me, they are the ultimate GNR records. They're so sprawling and epic and represent everything I love about this band.
I hope if Axl ever does pull his finger out and gets round to making a new record with the reformed lineup, that he allows Slash to have a greater hand in the creation of the songs. I think a truly collaborative record between Axl and Slash could really yield amazing results. It would've been nice for Izzy to have been on board also, as his influence and songwriting prowess is all over Appetite and the Illusions records, but I don't forsee that being a realistic scenario.

There's quite a lot of filler on UYI honestly. Although I still love them. I think I'd rather have something like Chinese Democracy for the next record honestly. Although I don't know if that'd be possible. Axl pretty much said all be had to say on that album. They're older now so an album full of AFD type songs would be pretty silly imo.

I went to these lads in London and it was brilliant. Nearly 3 hours. Estranged gave me palpitations.
