It still amazes me that they were all born within a few weeks in the same year....
I think what this thread is saying really is that Michael (and most artists) really did fuck up a lot PR wise over the years and made mistakes.
Like we all do.
But MJ's/Madonna's etc. mistakes are magnified because of who they are and also if they make a mistake, they make it in front of millions.
Sometimes these mistakes are planned & stupid (Janet's Superbowl), sometimes just spur of the moment getting carried away (Blanket on the balcony). But I'd hate to have every mistake I'd made carried like an albatross around my neck for the rest of my life.
Going back to MJ around the LWMJ time, I prefer to think a lot of it (not the Gavin section) he was medicated, he didn't seem himself, and between this & the 2001 MSG, I like to block it out. It's not the MJ I remember & love.
Where do we stand on Madonna's Sex book and the Justify My Love video? LOL If it's the reason we had to endure Miley Cyrus.....LOL
You read my mind matey! I was going to use Madonna's Sex book as an example.
Justify My Love though was perfect. It was a sexy, sleazy music video that suited a sexy, sleazy song. I some ways In The Closet is just as deliciously filthy.
Sex though I've always been split about. I've usually hated it for one very good reason.
She released it in conjunction with one of, if not, the best album of her career, Erotica. But what are the press going to talk about? Her album of great songs, or a picture book of her being frigged by Vanilla Ice?
So, she's the first to moan about not being taken seriously as a music artist, but then does this. If it had been released at a different time then I wouldn't have such a problem with it.
Same reason why Janet's Superbowl thing fucked me off, don't ask to be taken seriously then flash a boob to get publicity.
So yes, both things backfired for both artists. Erotica was the least selling album of Madonna's career, despite the fact that it's amazing.
Sometimes, the music should be strong enough to speak for itself. And that takes me to HIStory, did we really need the statues, the teaser and the CD booklet telling us how great he was? No. Just release Scream with teh short film (on time, by the way, it fucks me off that they delayed the film a few days after they released the song) and let the lyrics and the symbolism of the film speak for themselves.
Having said that, I recall at how MJ's eyes lit up when Sawyer quizzed him on the controvery of the HIStory trailer and said something like 'It got people talking? Great. Job done' and I get what he means.
