I wish I could say it was something cool, but for me, as a child of the late 80s, it was Bros "I Owe You Nothing." I was actually pretty big into them for a few years, which I used to get teased about at school, as most Bros fans were girls.
I still concede they had some quality songs! lol
Who were your earliest musical discoveries??

The first song I ever bought was a 7" (ask your parents) of Word Up by Cameo.
Second song I purchased with my own pocket money was The Way You Make Me Feel.
No shame here, I'm afraid.

First singles were Bucks Fizz, Debarge and Elaine Paige and Barbra Dickson on vinyl.
Albums were Bon Jovi Slippery When Wet, Dire Straits Brothers In Arms and Eurythmics Be Yourself Tonight, all on cassette.

I had albums and singles bought FOR me. I remember getting Bad and Kylie's debut on cassette. And I remember getting Especially For You on 12" and Locomotion on 7".
But the first I remember picking myself in a shop was Dr. Alban's It's My Life. LOL.

I didn't buy singles as kid but I bought Dangerous in 1995 and then HIStory a year later in cassette with my allowance. I wish they were the original cassettes and not copies though but my parents didn't take to record stores until I was 13 and I bought BOTDF with my savings. My parents never financed my fandom for MJ. IfI wanted to listen to Queen, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc, I played my dad's records. Happy 26th Birthday to Dangerous, BTW!

No childhood was complete without it. Infact, I think this whole talk of Thriller being the biggest selling album of all time is just a rouse. I think it's Kylie's debut.

I'll just go ahead and say up front that I'm old now, but I grew up in the 60's and I was a little kid when we moved to Texas. My mother used to call the big department store downtown to deliver us 45s from the top 40, and we would invite other little girls over for "dance parties." My mother wanted us to have friends and this seemed like the way to do it. Then one day we got 'Tears Of a Clown'-and that was MY record. I played it all day, all night, all the time, until the other kids refused to come over and my mother seriously was so sick of it that she thought about hiding it.
But (she told me this a lot later) she called the store and asked about the record. They apologized all over the place, and said we got it by mistake-it wasn't in the top 40, but in the top BLACK record list. Mama said she didn't care and send a lot more of them. So we got tons of Motown 45s and I was in heaven.
Funny how different things were then. (Different and the same).

Oh I'm not embarrassed, the first single and album I bought are fucking dope First single I bought was Don't Phunk With My Heart by The Black Eyed Peas, which is still a banger to this day. The first album I bought was American Idiot by Green Day, which is one of those albums that is just consistently great from start to finish.

I can't even remember which single exactly, but I do remember the first album - It was early 1984 and it was Sesame Street's birthday album, it was a tape and we got it for my 8th birthday as I loved Sesame Street, The Muppets and Fraggle Rock. I remember Oscar the grouch singing "A very unhappy birthday to you" and Big Bird doing Musical Chairs.
Some of the early singles I bought were War Song by Culture Club, Wake me up before you Go go by Wham! and my Toot toot by Denise Lasalle (Possibly as the video had cartoons in it). I also bought a album called Long Ago by a Maori reggae group called Herbs (Named after Marijuana) and I just loved it (Legend by Bob Marley was my brothers purchase, we bought it for Dad on fathers day, but we kept it for oursleves and got into reggae aged 8 and 11).
My first Michael Jackson purchase was the Bad album sometime at the beginning of 1988, and I first bought a Prince item in November 1991 a late bloomer there.

The first album I remember buying was an unofficial MJ compilation called Dance Collection Being a 12 year old boy I was both embarrassed and mesmerized by the cover.
