My first music purchase with Michael Jackson on it was just before bad. An album called Solid Gold hits 87' had Bad (The song) by MJ on it along with "I wanna dance with somebody" and "Living on Prayer" amongst others.
Before we could all afford albums at full whack, we used to buy those 12 - 20 Hits type albums, always a few dollars cheaper than solo albums and plus many of us did not want to waste on 2 or 3 hits and a lot filler. Cheap hits albums gave you as many 15 artists on one album and it was all the hits you loved. Usually they were released as hits were falling out of the charts - so memories of them were fresh and these albums often topped our charts (Usually Solid Gold or Hits in NZ, Thats what I call music in the Uk and so on).
Of course the albums were put on the cheapest quality vinyl or tape and often broke after a few listens, but who cared, most of the songs were novelties that wore off, although many lasting artists and quality songs made the cut. Here in NZ most of these albums had songs edited and faded out early to make room for as many as 20 cuts in a 1 hour CD/record/tape and often several of the songs were local hits or crappy filler that spent like 1 week at #50 on the chart.
Still it was a win win, and it wa sthe only place you got Michael Jackson next to Winnie Hona (A Maori pub artist).
