The King of Pop received a new Gold Disc certificate in the UK with the song "They Don't Care About Us". The information was released by the Business Association of the British recording industry, the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), on Friday (3rd).
The Gold Disc is a rating (as well as the Platinum, Diamond Disc, among others) to record that an album or single has reached a certain number of sales. This classification follows guidelines from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and the sales figures for earning a Gold Disc (or any of the other ratings) vary from country to country.
In the UK, the Gold Disc is given when the song records sales of 400,000 units.
Released in March 1996, the single "They Don't Care About Us" is one of the most ponderous protest songs that emerged in the 1990s.
