Here I mean what are you favourite Gay, Lesbian and Trans artists. I am going to exclude people mostly in the closet or who came out very late in their career (Freddie Mercury) or people just rumoured to be gay.
What I mean are openly gay artists (Boy George etc), or artists who came out as gay in the prime of their career (Melissa Etheridge, George Michael, Elton John). I am not going to include groups with one or two gay members that sing primarily heterosexual stuff (Judas Pirest etc).
Also I don't mean gay icons either unless they are gay themselves (Sorry no Kylie, Britney, Madonna, Babs, Macklemore etc). And guys and gals you don't need to be gay, I realise you are all probably straight and if anything I love when a gay artist crosses over for their talent rather than their niche appeal or stereotype conformity (We are talking about YOU Boy George).
Mine are.
1. George Michael - just gifted and beautiful, could write wonderful songs and very sincere, yet he had a sense of humour and could make you dance. 2. Boy George/Culture Club - Okay he is a complete cow, but he produced and made some of the catchiest music of the 80s - The Culture club really were the first act I got into and later learning all of those songs were about the drummer! 3. Elton John - A lot of susso hetty stuff in the early days, but he was always camp and out there, very very talented and awesom pop appeal. 4. Sylvester - Although she only had a few songs, it was magical and the first openly and proudly gay artiste, Once said he wanted to marry prince Charles so he could be the Queen of England.
Others I like too - Melissa Etheridge, KD Lang, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys.
Don't like - Morrissey - may be gay but also bigotted and his cheerless morose music gets me down.
So what are yours!
BTW: No homophobia or hate here. If you disagree with homosexual music and artists, don't post that opinion here.

Lady Gaga for me (she's been openly bisexual all her career). Her song Born This Way has become one of the most biggest LGBT anthems this century too. Not too big on her recent stuff but her albums The Fame Monster and Born This Way are classics.

I'm a big fan of the Pet Shop Boys. I have all the PSBs' albums - regular and expanded versions and have seen them live numerous times.
They also produced my favourite Boy George song The Crying Game.

Freddie Mercury, my absolute favorite. Many people assume he was gay but he had relationships with men and women.Even if he was, I wouldn't care. I'd still love him and think he'd have made a fabulous drag queen. Rob Halford, Judas Priest frontman would be another one. I haven't thought of any other. More than LGBT performers, it comes to mind LGBT icons. Liza, Cher, Judy Garland.

Bisexuals don't really count, I would not associate Lady Gaga as a gay artist, she ings about men and only has a gay following. I especially excluded Freddie too as he only came out the day before he died and was singing many songs about women with a hetty group, so only Russg Counts

Well, George Michael didn't come out at the prime of his career either and rather than coming out he was dragged out of the closet when he couldn't deny it any more. During his prime GM projected a heterosexual image.
Freddie was just a private person but he actually gave some hints and those who were around him always knew. To include GM but exclude FM seems a bit arbitrary to me.

The thread title says favorite LGBT artists and bisexuals are part of the community. If they did come out of the closet or were forced to it later in life, it shouldn't matter since they face more rejection and backlash from the society.
Not really a fan of her since I haven't dug into her discography properly but I like some songs by drag queen singer Adore Delano from RuPaul's Drag Race. Talking about Ru, I like her Supermodel song.

Bisexuals don't really count What do you think the B in LG BT stands for? Lady Gaga has openly identified as bisexual her entire career, has created one of the most successful pro-LGBT anthems in music history and has advocated for LGBT rights to the point there's even a whole dedicated Wikipedia section to it. The first factor alone qualifies her to be in this thread, so stop making up so many pointless rules. Freddie Mercury should be discussed too, Respect77 and Snow White bring up great points.

The fact you can only choose bi curious and dabblers like Gaga and Mercury shows there is borderline homophobia in your choices. I am militantly gay - not borderline lets assuage the straights with our choices.
Anyway Gaga is a lightweight, not much more than a pop squeaker and far too modern for icon status, also she has been invisible since Born this way flopped. Same with Mercury loved the music, but the fact he hushed hushed about his AIDS and the way he treated his gay friends after his death (His so called girlfriend - Mary Austin, kicked all of his gay friends and staff including long term partner Jim Hutton out on the street). Freddie was great, but he was hardly a hero for the gay communities. He even kept silent about his Indian ancestry - trying to pass for white, none of his fans thought he was anything but snow white until his death, trying to be a straight white man, rather than a gay Indian called Farookh Bulsara. If anything he would be near the bottom of my list.
He also had a lot or irresponsible sex, never acknowledging his sickness until 1 day before he died, it was sad and we never had time to mourn him.

Anyway Gaga is a lightweight, not much more than a pop squeaker and far too modern for icon status, also she has been invisible since Born this way flopped. Dude fuck that. Just because you have not been inspired by her does not make all her work for LGBT acceptance invalid. Whether you like it or not, she's been one of the biggest LGBT idols for this generation of music, period. While I am not as big a fan now, I have spent many years in the Gaga fanbase, and I have seen first hand in real life and in social media how much she means to young people of the LGBT community; how much her music and openly spoken attitudes to sexuality and life have helped them to accept themselves for who they really are. She has never hidden away from who she really is or what she believes, she has always been open to and accepting of those who are different and her work has always openly reflected that. I am fully within my rights to say Lady Gaga is a favourite LGBT artist of mine. Not only because she is an artist who has always openly identified as bisexual, not only because she has always been openly accepting of the LGBT community, not only because she has spoken up for the rights of the LGBT community time and time again but also because she has released some of the most successful pro-acceptance, pro-LGBT music of all time. I have seen what she has meant to people my age who identify within the definition of LGBT. We are discussing LGBT artists here and she is completely within the realm of that definition. If that means I have 'borderline homophobia' in my choice then frankly, you need to look up the definition of what homophobia actually is because saying Lady Gaga is a favourite LGBT artist of mine is anything but. If anything the fact you seem to be so against bisexuals, saying they "don't really count" (direct quote) when it comes to discussions of LG BT artists is actually discriminating. You ask for discussions on LGBT artists, yet refuse to accept discussion on an entire 25% of the people who come under the umbrella of that term? Seriously give me a break. And it's funny you say Born This Way is a flop, despite the single going #1 on 28 charts whilst reaching the Top #5 in 37 charts and the single having sold over 10,000,000 copies alone. In what world is that a a flop? If anything, I'd even go as far as to say it's the biggest and most successful straight up pro-LGBT anthem in a very, very long time. The fact her material afterwards is not as successful does not negate anything about this monumental achievement.

I like Antony and the Johnsons quite a bit when I'm in the mood for that sort of music. Although now she's called Anohni. "Hope there's someone" is one of the most heartbreaking songs ever written. Kate Bush mentioned loving her during an Aerial promo interview. If KB likes you, you're definitely cool

You seem to have little to no understanding about how hard it was to come out years ago. How dare you get annoyed with people for not coming out sooner in a time when it was fucking illegal for God's sake.
You say Freddie was 'trying to be a straight white man', well yes, just like previously married Elton John or George Michael who you are kind enough to 'allow' in your list.
Jesus, put yourself in their place a) they grew up in a time (Freddie especially) where like I say it was at least illegal if not then almost universally abhored. b) they had built their image up with either a macho rock audience or screaming girls so to be gay would compromise or ruin that and c) it's none of our business.
Unlike now where it's almost trendy to be gay or bi these people did not have that benefit. Yes, it's great that we had people like Jimmy Sommerville (arguably the first properly out pop star) or Boy George that pushed the boundaries but not everyone can be a pioneer.
And your stuff about Gaga was crazy, I mean I'm no fan and I reckon Born This Way was just a rehash of Express Yourself, but for this generation of LGBTetc.. I imagine she's an icon and is to this generation was Madonna was to the 80's/90's crowd.
Even straight(ish) people like Gaga, Bowie, Madonna etc have helped people come to terms with the fact that it's okay to be different & flamboyant.
No doubt you'll turn this thread into one of accusation now as you have done against HIStoric just because you don't agree with his choices (which are about the music, not the person). Maybe you're just in the mood for some controversy? (you can have that for free, a reason to mention Prince in your reply).

^^ Agreed TonyR . The attitude has changed for the better even in the last 10-15 years so I can imagine it would be complete career suicide in the 70s. On the other hand these artists were touring all over the world not just Europe where the climate was more moderate even back then. There are places you can get jail time or even the death sentence in some parts of the world to this date. So I have no problem with people not wanting to come out, even though it would be ideal. But we do not live in an ideal world
