Getting a bit nostalgic I found this website: www.bravo-archiv.de/It is so interesting that MJ wasn't really that popular in Germany (at least with the teen bopper audience of BRAVO) until Bad era. I couldn't find a Thriller era cover but during Bad he had like 4-5 covers a year. Also BRAVO had these Otto awards where their readers voted for Male and Female Singer of The Year, Band of the Year etc. MJ never made it into the Top 3 until 1987, but from then on he had a great run: 1987 - 2. 1988 - 1. 1989 - 3. 1992 - 1. 1993 - 1. 1994 - 1. 1995 - 1. 1996 - 2. In 1983 he was #5, in 1984 #4. Both of those years #1 was the one hit wonder Limahl ("Never Ending Story"). Well, I guess German teen girls found him cute. (Though I will say MJ was a lot cuter. LOL.) On one hand I am sure MJ finally making a European tour helped his boom in Germany in 1988. Also MTV Europe started in 1987. I also wonder how much it was a factor that in Thriller era he still had a dark skin and whether German teens found a light skin MJ more relatable later. I just find it weird that MJ ruled the pop world in 1983-84 yet the teen audience of BRAVO had a rather tepid response to him and favoured the likes of Limahl. LOL.

respect77, that's a really interesting aspect.
This makes me want to check Billboard's "Hits of The World" section from 1979-84. Thriller was huge in the UK and the short film got a pretty big premiere on TV, which is interesting as Michael did less appearances there during that period than he did in the US, and he barely made any in the US lol

June 15, 1988 article from German BRAVO Magazine about the Deutsche Bundesbahn (German Railways), Mama Concerts and BRAVO organizing six special trains just for those who travel to one MJ's four concerts in Germany. Bad Tour was absolute madness!

For those of us growing up in continental Europe (Germany, Eastern Europe etc.) BRAVO Magazine has been a big part of our teen years. It's a German teen magazine, the first issue was published in 1956 and still exists until today. So generations have grown up on it. The German version was thicker and it wasn't easy to get here, but in the early 1990s they started to publish it in my language as well. It was published every two weeks and before the Internet era that was my main source of getting MJ news and pictures. I have great respect for that magazine also because unlike many other media, they never turned their back on MJ, they have always been very supportive of him, even during the allegations. They made it very clear they didn't believe the allegations and they kept supporting MJ. They were always very loyal to him. So here are some BRAVO covers with MJ through the years. 15 June 1988 29 July 1988 17 November 1988 15 December 1988 13 July 1989 23 December 1991 I can't make out the date. 15 April 1992 Not sure of the exact date October 12, 1992 12 November 1992 8 July 1993 1993 December 16, 1993 - "We Love Michael!" - BRAVO expressing its support for MJ during the allegations 1994 1 September 1994 5 January 1995 4 May 1995 14 June 1994 16 November 1995 29 February 1996 18 July 1996 1996 MJ with BRAVO chief editor Alex Gernandt September 15, 2008 July 16, 2009 2009 MJ tribute issue Very insightful post. Why "Jacko in Japan" though? I guess it made a good cover. Anyway, great to see their loyalty for Michael. Also I think the nickname "Wacko Jacko" was getting very popular back then, so they gave it a shot. Great post.

"Jacko" was thought to be an affectionate nickname in Europe at the time and a lot of people were oblivious to its origins and offensive nature. So you have to give it the benefit of doubt here, esp. when BRAVO was never offensive to MJ.
