This reminds me of a review I saw from either NME or Melody Maker (one of those pretentious British music rags) from 1982, saying that Thriller was unremarkable and would signal the death-knell of MJs hopes for a successful solo career. LOL. You have to feel sorry for the critics who get it THAT wrong.

The Jacksons have always been praised for their high level of showmanship, but criticized for neglecting a large number of their Motown hits. I think the public is more aware of the Jackson 5 than The Jacksons.
I think 'Thriller' was a bigger statement because it was deliberately created to defy conventional labels. Reviewers didn't know what to make of it initially. It was only later when the totality of the vision unfolded that they came around.
Unsurprisingly 'Off The Wall' is the only adult solo album that received positive reviews from the beginning.

I feel like MJ has never really been a media's darling. Maybe for 5 minutes during Thriller simply because there was no way to overlook him then. I kind of consider him a "People's Champion" because he sure didn't get as much support and respect from the media as some of his peers did and it's like he became so huge despite of the media rather than because of them.

Never knew that ; it's interesting. I remember watching, some years ago, the animated biographical movie "Persepolis" by Marjane Satrapi. The story was the story of Marjane Sartrapi : an Iranian young woman who lived at the time of the downfall of the Shah (Iranian former head of state), during her childhood, in the late 1970s, and witnessed, as a little girl and a teen, the transformation of the Iranian society from a westernized dictatorship to an over-religious despotic regime represented by the Ayatollah (Khomeini, at that time). In one scene of the movie, at a illegal market, the girl was looking for some new music from popular western artists to listen to (MJ was one of them) before two over-religious women, wearing burkas, caught the girl and threatened her to bring her to the authorities. The girl managed to persuade them not to do that, though. The situation of Iran, at that time, was also compared to the situation of Iraq, which was, at that time, a free and liberal country compared to Iran.

Here is that scene.

For those of us growing up in continental Europe (Germany, Eastern Europe etc.) BRAVO Magazine has been a big part of our teen years. It's a German teen magazine, the first issue was published in 1956 and still exists until today. So generations have grown up on it. The German version was thicker and it wasn't easy to get here, but in the early 1990s they started to publish it in my language as well. It was published every two weeks and before the Internet era that was my main source of getting MJ news and pictures. I have great respect for that magazine also because unlike many other media, they never turned their back on MJ, they have always been very supportive of him, even during the allegations. They made it very clear they didn't believe the allegations and they kept supporting MJ. They were always very loyal to him. So here are some BRAVO covers with MJ through the years. 15 June 1988 29 July 1988 17 November 1988 15 December 1988 13 July 1989 23 December 1991 I can't make out the date. 15 April 1992 Not sure of the exact date October 12, 1992 12 November 1992 8 July 1993 1993 December 16, 1993 - "We Love Michael!" - BRAVO expressing its support for MJ during the allegations 1994 1 September 1994 5 January 1995 4 May 1995 14 June 1994 16 November 1995 29 February 1996 18 July 1996 1996 MJ with BRAVO chief editor Alex Gernandt September 15, 2008 July 16, 2009 2009 MJ tribute issue

Thanks for the post Respect. I loved Bravo when I was a teen (not that long ago lol) and I remember the Michael Jackson special magazine. It had 100 pages, I still have it.
