I so wish I could go to that thing, it would be hot. I have wtached numerous people's videos on it (Mr Ant's, Prince's friend, Violet reality etc) and they are raving about it. I was never a HUGE Prince fan. Coming away from it, I feel such a loss. He was phenomenal. I hope that someday MJ's estate will learn what "tasteful" means.

As you know, I've always been a massive Prince fan, so I'm sure this would've been quite an experience for me. Do you feel like this has made you a bigger fan then?

It's made me want to dive deeper into the albums I've not gotten around to yet. I'm familiar with everything up to Come, and then it gets foggy. Aside of Rave, 3121, Musicology and Art Official Cage I can't say I know much from any other album. It's given me a deeper respect for the man (which I didnt think was possible). Actually, you could say I'm a bigger fan because of it.

There's a lot of shit on there, some amazing stuff and some less amazing stuff, but it's a brilliant, ambitious, sprawling and heartfelt album to get into. See if you can track down Face Down Live 97, it's fucking awesome!! My all time favourite live Prince recording.

I spun all 3 CDs in order and found it a bit much. Once Ive sourced it I'll give each disc the right amount of attention. At the minute, I'm digging the Love Symbol album. Goddamn.

I think Tony M really ages the album, which is a shame, as the NPG never sounded better than on some of these songs. Absolutely adore songs like Sweet Baby, Damn U, Blue Light, 3 Chains O Gold, 7, Arrogance, Blue Light, Sexy MF and The Max. It's really the sound of Prince at his most cocksure, it's a wildly pompous record, self indulgent and completely OTT, but he's also at the peak of his powers.

He is a bit heavy on the first half of the album alright. The songs just get so so good (not that the first part is poor- far from it) but the mid latter songs are just phenomenal. I've one headphone in at work all day for this (mono setting of course)

Emancipation is a real hit and miss album, but overall the album is good. Some of the highlights include The Love We Make, Style, In this bed Eye scream, White Mansion, Holy River, One kiss at a time, Sex in the summer, Betcha by golly wow, One of us, Saviour (warning lots of shrieking). The rest is passable, only 3 tracks are truly unlistenable and they are all rap - Mr Happy, Da da da and Face Down. The Plan off Kamasutra is also forgettable.
For a later album, you can't go pass 3121, his best of the noughties including Black Sweat, Te Amo Corazon, Fury, Satisfied and The Word along with the title track.
Post 1996 Prince is hard to find as it is mostly out of print, but his later albums pop up in second hand stores. Anything up to the Hits 1993 is easy to get, later albums are harder.

No no no no no Triumph! Face Down is the best cut on Emancipation! And 3121 is one of his worst albums imo. Different strokes, different folks, I guess. In terms of essential 00's albums, I would say The Rainbow Children, One Nite Alone, Planet Earth and Lotusflow3r/MPLSound.

What the hell!
How can you not like the magic of 3121, that is his poppiest post 1995 album ever. We have to agree - Jaywonder and Innuendo41 if you guys like pop more, 3121 is for you - if you like the deeper and more intense stuff, then what Matty likes is for you.
I would say listen to everything, Matty and I may not agree, but we are both definitely hardcore Prince fans.
I agree though that Planet Earth and the Lotusflow3r albums are worth a listen and getting, because they have Prince doing what he does best, 4 or 5 different genres of music on one album, every song on a good or decent Prince album sounds different to the last and that is what makes him so exciting.
Planet Earth cops a lot of shit from the fan community at large, but it is a decent album, with most post 1995 Prince you get the mix of classics and throwaway filler tracks - but the highlights make it all worth while. Plus you can see how much talent he has and how much music there is in him.
The Rainbow Children was a 2001 album in which he is singing the praises of being a Jehovah's Witness and it divides the community - most think it is the greatest album in his wilderness years (1996 - 2013), whereas a few like me think it is a steaming pile of doodoo. The musicality and playing is excellent and it may have some of his best jazz and future funk stylings ever, but the lyrics are like listening to Christian ISIS or a preacher around 1646 called Obadiah. He uses blatant misogyny and sexism (Muse to the Pharoah - in which women serve their man and the man does all the work and thinking), anti semitism (Family name) and out and out non witness bashing (1 + 1 + 1 = 3) which even borrows the beat off Erotic City. It is also homophobic, bigotted and anti gay and the 14 minute opening track features a bad Darth Vader voice as God. There is a good reason that this album sold only 5 figures and is his worst selling commercial album of all time (Not including NPGMC stuff and limited release albums)
The hardest thing is finest physical copies as promotion of post Warners Material (1996 -) as they had limited dstribution, and the only reason I have them is through buying them as they came out. Your best bet is ebay and second hand stores, but greed has crept in due to his death and people show their worst sides when a star dies.
You can not go wrong with his last 4 albums, all new enough to still be in most record shops. These are Art Official Age and Plectrum Electrum (2014), Hit and Run Phases 1 and 2 (2015). AOA and Phase 2 are better, but the other 2 still have some great songs.

My list of suggested Prince albums listening for new fans.
Once you have got past single songs and greatest hits type collections and want to get into his back catalogue - these are my suggestions (Mine only - I seriously invite MattyJam or any other Prince fan here to offer their's too). Fortunately his Warners era (1978 - 1993 Hitz) stuff is generally his best and easy to get. Warner NPG (1993 - 1996, 1999 and 2014 -) is harder and NPG with other companies distributing is hard 1996 Emancipation to 2010's 2Oten. Limited releases like Goldnigga/Exodus/Newpowersoul and the NPGMC sets are even harder still,. but have less essential stuff. .
Essential albums - 5 star
1999 - 1982 Purple Rain - 1984, these two have some of his most classic songs ever and are very well known Parade - 1986 - Brilliant pop Sign o the Times - 1987 - A masterclass in music and probably the single most essential album you can buy Lovesexy 1988- This is spiritual and a lot of fun and really the end of his 80s golden period The Gold Experience - 1995 - Harder to find, but this funk/rock/rap and sexy ballad laden masterpiece is worth the effort Art Official Age - 2014 - The best of his later material with mindblowing stuff like Time, Way back home and Clouds.
Defintely worth getting - 4 star
Dirty Mind 1980 - An erotic punk funk masterpiece, this album was the beginning of his genius and crossover phase Controversy 1981 - More of the same with a sex edge and a great funk song, Controversy, Do MeBaby, Sexuality and Lets Work are masterpieces. Around the world in a day - 1985, a bit uneven, but lots of sunshiny pop and some masterpieces here, this is way underated. Diamonds and Pearls - 1991, as above 2 fillers, but a lot of jangly pop, sexy ballads and a great band album, a real early 90s party flavour plus it has Gett Off and Insatiable need I say more. 3121 - 2006 - A mid noughties festival of pop and soul nuggets a solid album Lotusflow3r/MPLSOUND - 2009 - Two albums containing some incredible songs and a good futristic techno meets funk lite and jazzique. the Bria disc isa throwaway though. Hit n Run Phase 2 - 2015 - His last official album left a lot of gems like Revelation, Black Muse, Stare and When she comes.
Worth checking out, but there are some flaws - 3 stars
For You 1978 - His first album, cute and sexy disco with some rock thrown in Prince 1979 - More assured followed up, some great songs like Bambi, Sexy Dancer, I feel 4 u and I wanna be your lover, but let down by some fillery ballads Graffiti Bridge 1990 - Good if flawed soundtrack to abysmal movie, The Time and other artists tracks are Meh! but Prince's songs are pretty damn good, Question of You, Joy in Repetition and still would stand all time Love Symbol 1992 - As above Damn U, Sweet Baby, 7, Love 2 the 9s are pure gold, but lots of silly fillers like Arrogance and the Flow, ruined by Tony Ms rapping and cringeworthy lyrics. Emancipation 1996 - Patchy and uneven but some great songs here Crystal Ball 1998 - 3 album set and mostly good songs, mix of genius level 80s stuff with some bad mid 90s remixes and filler. Musicology 2004 - Well recieved, jazzy and funky pop set, but plays it too safe and is boring Planet Earth 2007 - Inoffensive poppy follow up, again some good stuff and some bad filler (Mr Goodnight)
Caution advised - many flaws and filler but some nuggets too, for true fans only - 2 stars
Batman 1989 - The lowpoints on this are sad -Arms of Orion, Lemon Crush, and compared to his other 80s stuff, this is snore Black Album 1987/1994 - Too patchy for my liking - its okay I guess Come 1994 - Again a few good songs, but Orgasm, Solo and 11 minutes of come is too much, plus he is just having sex half the time. Exodus 1995 - 2 or 3 epic songs (Get wild, The good life, count the days) and a lot of shitty filler and brainless skits. Chaos and Disorder 1996 - Rushed contractual filler with few highlights The Vault OF4S - 1999 - More contractual filler, some songs alright - others scarily bad and way too short Rave un2/in2 Joy fantastic 1999/2000 - Both are watered down pop come backs and sound oh so dated 1999 Michelle Branch vengaboyz era - absolutely dire and full of Larry Graham The Rainbow Children - 2001 - Great playing and musicality, but the lyrics can induce a fatwa. One Night Alone/Live/It aint over - 2002 - One of the most boring live sets ever, and he put a nest of eggs on the cover? 20Ten - 2010, the first three songs are magic, the rest is unlistenable Plectrum Electrum - 2014 , Uninspiring rock with his girl band, some songs like Anotherlove is great, the rest is ordinary and Boytrouble is the worst song he ever made this side of 2000. Hit n Run Phase 1 - 3 really bad songs with shitty rapping ruin this uneven set along with a dreadful remix and one track which is just synthesiser noises and dub techno crap.
Avoid like the plague - of no interest to anyone including the hardcore - 1 star
Goldnigga - 1993 - Why was this even put out, he fired Tony M afterwards Newpowersoul - 1998 - Complete dreck, some of the worst music ever made, just sex and dancing and nothing more Kamasutra 1996 - Just ballet type muzak The truth 1996 - Morose and dull NEWS 2003 - 4 very shitty jazz tracks that go nowhere

I'd disagree with Batman. It's right up there.
In other news, I just got the Hits/B Sides.
Prince and Oasis made some serious B-Side errors!

Prince and Oasis made some serious B-Side errors! I'm not sure I would say it was an error to have so many great b-sides in the 80s. It speaks more to the incredible quantity and quality of his output at the time, that he had so many great songs that he can afford to use gems like Power Fantastic, Erotic City, She's Always In My Hair, 17 Days and Hello as non-always tracks. These songs would be album highlights to a lesser artist.
