New Member here I love both Prince and MJ, they will always be my favourites. And I must say, that I sadly learned who MJ was when he died. I was 12 years old and I've never heard of him before but when he died I realized that he was something special because the impact of his death was something huge, I mean, I've never seen anything like that before. People around the globe were crying, dancing, singing. Because ONE man died. So that's how I learned who MJ was and always will be. It was kind of a sad summer because he died, but his music made it the greatest summer of my life so far. Now, this is a Prince thread, so let me tell ya my story with Prince. Because, this is a little different. I didn't learn who he was through his death. I became a fan when he was still alive. So I kind of had my own story when he died. I take ya'll back to 2010, when I sat on the couch with my mothers boyfriend, we had a music channel called VIVA, I don't know if you americans (or wherever you live ) know this channel. Anyways, they often showed older music, 70s, 80s, 90s etc. And one day, I was sitting there and they said: "Now comes Purple Rain from Prince." The Song started and it had me in a second! I was glued to the TV, my heart skipped more than one beat. This song hit me like no other song before. It was almost as if this song was talking to me. It was so beautiful. AND THAT FREAKING GUITAR SOLO Oh my god, Prince, he's the reason I'm learning to play the guitar (Thank you Prince). So let's jump to 2015, I was really down in the beginning of the year. I was depressed and couldn't get out of bed. My family was really upset and nothing seemed to help me. So one day, I was laying in bed and scrolled down on my playlist and out of nowhere, I read the title of a song I haven't heard in a long time. It was Purple Rain. I listened to the song and it made me happy again, I was able to get out of bed again, because of that song. You can imagine how grateful I was. And I promised myself that I'll meet Prince one time and I wanted to thank him because without his song, I wouldn't have gone out of bed. Well.......you know what happened........I never got the chance to meet him. Because he died before that. And for the first time I felt it by myself what you feel when that guy you look up to dies all of a sudden. In 2016 I felt the pain the MJ Fans felt in 2009, those who knew him from the beginning, those who witnessed him. I felt the pain myself. I don't think I'll ever fully get over it, because his death was so senseless, just like MJ's. These guys should still be around. But life isn't always fair. We still got their music and I'm grateful for forums like this, so we can gathere and remember them.

I've been listening a bit more to Prince again after seeing a screening of SOTT last month. I'm not a huge fan of the film but it was great to experience in a cinema. Did anyone else go to a screening (I know there were several in Europe)?
A lot of material has leaked in the past couple of days too. I love the early tours so was very happy to see a few new soundboards pop up. The '81 Pittsburgh show sounds good in particular. I still have to go through most of the new outtakes that have leaked, but the set looks quite amazing. Acoustic Sister demos, original NC2U studio version, etc. Wow.

I always thought of Hit N Run Phase 1 as being a bit of a companion piece to AOA. I think if he had taken the best six or seven tracks from each album he would've had a masterpiece on his hands.

I've only heard the titular track but it's quite catchy.

I got Mayte Garcia's Prince book as a Christmas present yesterday. Not a huge fan of her, especially after what she said about Wade/MJ a while back, but I have to admit, it's compelling reading. I'm only a few chapters in so far, so I'll save my thoughts for when I've read the whole thing. Has anyone else checked out her book?

I was expecting a really trashy, tell-all scandal story, but I was pleasantly surprised at the heartfelt and tender memoir that Mayte Garcia has written. Her early life and career are captured well, and she is surprisingly humble at her success even before Prince catapulted her into the public eye. Her relationship with Prince is an interesting insight into how he was as a person, and he comes across as complicated as you would expect. She reveals next to nothing about their sex life, of which I was happy she has enough self-respect not to sell all of her secrets. It is personal, after all! She reveals the truth about the birth and death of their son, Amiir, which you can tell was difficult for her to write, and can tell it still affects her today. All in all, I enjoyed reading it.

A lot of fans had mixed feelings, especially after her friend Dave (who was on Instagram trashing MJ) was on prince org, twitter and appeared on a podcast trashing fans and other people who were around Prince over the years. There were other things that people felt contradicted what she said in the book.
All in all, everyone has a story

I actually prefer the concert film versions of the SOTT tracks than the actual studio album versions. They have a bit more kick in them imho.

Well, I finished Mayte's book.
It was actually a brilliant read. She comes across as a lot more intelligent and savvy than I had previously given her credit for. I initially had mixed feelings about even reading the book, as I thought it was a cheap and classless thing for her to do, but she did put forward a convincing argument justifying her reasons. At the end of the day, Prince was so controlling during their marriage and she literally had to go along with all of his wishes, no matter how unreasonable. Even days after she had lost their baby, he made her sit down and pretend like everything was fine and dandy in an interview with Oprah, despite her begging him to cancel. She goes on to say how she spent the majority of her life respecting Prince's wishes and now that he was no longer around, she felt as if she wanted to tell her version of the story, as it was ten years of her life, just as much as it was Prince's, which I think is fair enough.
It was really a gripping read, I couldn't put it down. Nothing about the way Prince behaved particularly surprised me, and for the most part, she talks with a great deal of affection and respect for him. She clearly still loves the man, but she herself has led a very interesting and unusual life even outside of her years with Prince, so her story is definitely worth a read.

I might give this a read at some point. She makes a good point that it was ten years of her life just as much as it was Prince's. Must have been very hard to appear on Oprah after that. When Oprah asks Prince about the baby it's a bit weird. All I could assume is that Prince must have had a lot of hurt inside himself to just act as if everything was ok, and then there was Emancipation aswell. How does Mayte feel about the album? And does she speak about their other attempt to have a child? They definitely seemed like they were in love.

I won't spoil anything for you in case you do read it, but she does cover her second pregnancy. She also talks a lot about how much his music meant to her at that time, she singles out the song "Comeback" which she said was written about their son. They did very much seem in love. I think if anything, I didn't realise quite how much of a muse she was to Prince from 92-98 before things turned sour. She was a huge part of his life in those years and albums like Love Symbol and Emancipation would've been drastically different if they had never met.

Sure Emancipation is a bit overblown but there's some great tracks on it. Do you think Prince was unable to accept certain truths about life? The death of his child and appearing on stage at Paisley Park days before he died as if he wasn't ill. Although he seemed to except it I guess by seeking help. It's weird but sometimes I still can't believe he's actually gone, like I have these very jarring sudden moments of hard reality that this is now a post-Prince world.
