Artists like Mariah or Whitney aren't necessarily known for a fantastic catalog, but rather their voices. I'd say Whitney's catalog is pretty mediocre, it's her performance and vocal abilities that elevated those songs. Every aspiring female vocalist wants to sing like Whitney. That's why she was special. I'm no massive Whitney fan, but that's unfair. If it was about the voice, artists like Leona Lewis or Candice Brown (ex American Idol winner) would be huge & not just known for their first couple of singles. Whitney's Hits collection has some absolute classics on there, both from the funky and ballad side. Especially ones bolded below Disc: 1 1. Saving All My Love For You
2. Greatest Love Of All
3. One Moment In Time
4. I Have Nothing 5. I Will Always Love You
6. Run To You 7. You Give Good Love 8. All At Once 9. Where Do Broken Hearts Go 10. If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful (Duet With Jermaine Jackson) 11. Didn't We All Most Had It All 12. All The Man That I Need 13. Exhale (Shoop Shoop) 14. Count On Me (Duet With Cece Winans) 15. I Believe In You And Me 16. I Learned From The Best 17. Same Script, Defferent Cast (Duet With Deborah Cox) 18. Could I Have This Kiss Forever (Duet With Enrique Iglesias) Disc: 2 1. If I Told You That (Whitney Houston & George Michael) 2. Fine 3. My Love Is Your Love
4. It Not Right But It's Okay
5. Heartbreak Hotel 6. Step By Step 7. Queen Of The Night (Cj Mackintosh Mix) 8. I'm Every Woman 9. Love Will Save The Day 1 0. I'm Your Baby Tonight
11. So Emotional
12. I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)
13. How Will I Know

Maybe mediocre was a bit too harsh. But I do think Whitney elevated those songs. And I don't think Leona Lewis or any American Idol winner is on her level. It is not only the technical abilities to sing that made Whitney special but also the emotion and passion that she could sing with. Technically Mariah is actually better in several aspects (eg. bigger range), but I always preferred Whitney. And it's not for nothing that all those American Idol singers want to be like her.

Agree with that. But like I say she had some cracking tunes also. But voice for me is always secondary, I know Celine, Mariah & Whitney are the best singers of the last 25 years but I'd rather have Madonna or 80s/90s Janet anyday.

Give me Whitney over Mariah any day. Her fans can say Mariah is a more complete artist because she writes her songs but Whitney to me was a better singer and performer, she had such a passion and feeling to sing that any other aspiring copycat from any singing competition show fall short.
Leona Lewis is British, BTW and she won the third X Factor season in UK, if I'm not mistaken, the show wasn't even broadcast here but Leona was offered the role of Grizabella on Broadway in the 2016 revival of Cats the musical, that's how I knew who she was. It's true most aspiring singers that came out of those shows the producers make them sing or they want to sing like Whitney, not just in American Idol
If people are not fans who constantly listen to her, otherwise Mariah's songs are forgettable. I honestly can't remember any original song title. Her Christmas album is the cheesiest thing ever and I've never been a fan that high pitched note scream she's famous for, it sounds like an animal screeching. Having said that, I like her MTV Unplugged show a lot, Mariah truly did justice to the original songs but she didn't evoke the innocence and tenderness Michael had in I'll Be There though.

I Learned From The Best is also a classic. And I agree with Snow White. Whitney over Mariah any day of the week. I'm tired of recent Mariah songs, which all start with some weird drum machine kick sound and some awful claps.

Let us stick to shitty music and not Mariah and Whitney, those two are divas and untouchable - sorry. Whitney's catalogue is mediocre - seriously?
Sorry I got caught up in a fit of pique.

And when they got together? My God there is nothing in this world quite like it. It's like God himself personally allowed angels to grace your ears with their very presence. The sound of the various Beatles harmonizing together is one of the things that really got me into them in the first place, their voices were perfect for each other and I'm so glad they recognized this too and harmonized a lot. Wow, that's some serious hyperbole right there. I've heard a lot of Beatles music, so I do not speak out of ignorance. Yes, they harmonize well. But a lot of mediocre singers can sound good harmonizing. I think their strength lied in their songwriting, not in their vocals. It always makes me laugh seeing Lennon and McCartney in lists of the all time greatest singers, when you know they wouldn't pass the first round of X Factor or American Idol if they were competing today. Their voices served the music well, but to claim they are anything special vocally - either technically or otherwise - is just the blinkered worship of an overly-zealous fanatic.

Wow, that's some serious hyperbole right there. Not for me, but I am a real sucker for their harmonising so hey They might not be Freddie Mercury but they definitely knew how to utilise their vocals well and I think to me that's what matters most when it comes to a song - the pure feeling and emotion they can emit. I tend to find their voices quite moving on a number of songs especially, so for me, they're great singers because they move me. I can understand if some don't feel the same, different strokes for different folks and all! I agree on the all-time list though. Like I'd have them on there somewhere for sure but on purely singing ability alone, there's no way I'd put them above Freddie Mercury or Michael Jackson - which Rolling Stone magazine did. I feel they are comparable to some of the people around them on that list, but then again I'm not sure if I'd place some of those people that high.
